African neighbour voted Reform

I was talking to one of my neighbours over the garden fence today. I wasn't sure if they had voted as didn't know their rights and I don't know how long they've been in the country. They've lived there over a year. They're African.
I said I was glad our local councillor had kept their seat. Labour. They do a lot for us. I've had a fair bit of contact and they do what they say.
Neighbour said they'd voted Reform. They're from an African country and are black. I was so shocked I couldn't hide it. I hadn't asked they just said. I thought they were joking at first but no.
Dh said why was I surprised? I thought that was obvious?

Farage fucked the country over with his Brexit lies - printed all over buses. I can't get my head around why anyone would vote for that snake again. It's all very bizarre and depressing to me. Voting for Farage is just like voting for Trump or Putin - fucking nuts. Narcissistic megalomaniacs the lot of them.

PiggyPigalle · 02/05/2025 17:30

So you sucked up to your black neighbours, by assuring them you'd voted for the "correct" party for them. How embarrassing.

Boris was responsible for the buses

I get the impression the OP is just interested in understanding more about their choice of vote.

They volunteered the information, OP didn’t ask who they voted for.

Yes that's right. I know people who voted Reform. I'm genuinely just curious. I've had some answers in this thread. As well as being called racist myself.
I don't think the neighbour (female BTW so those saying he were wrong) is racist. She's a lovely intelligent woman. She must have her reasons?

Wow are you so shocked? I always find it baffling when people assume that people from ethnic minority backgrounds vote left. People from African and Asian countries are frequently more conservative in their beliefs and outlooks.

Edited

Agreed! It really annoys me when white middle class Brits get all offended on behalf of ethnic minorities… who are we to tell them what to think. I work with people from all cultures and as you say a lot of them are far more conservative than we are! One African lady said that the BNP talked a lot of sense! Now that did baffle me 😄

No I voted for the one who was in and is again who is a good candidate. So DFOD. I don't suck up to anyone. She already likes me and likewise.

Where am I offended? I was shocked. I posted to get answers and did. Believe me my neighbours don't need me to stick up for them.

You’re lucky enough to have a family you describe as ‘lovely’ as your neighbours. Why spoil it over politics? Maybe stick to less controversial issues such as the weather? There’s loads of MN threads complaining about noisy and inconsiderate neighbours, I wouldn’t want to mess things up with a family of good neighbours.

Easypeas · 02/05/2025 17:39

Well every days a school day. You have learnt that people from different backgrounds have a range of political views!

Judiezones · 02/05/2025 17:41

How dare your black African neighbour have a mind of his own and how dare he decide to vote differently from you?

WhatShoes4me · 02/05/2025 17:42

Easypeas · 02/05/2025 16:35

Maybe they worked hard to come to this country legally and are fed up with those who do it illegally.

Yes I think that's it.

I know which country they're from. They have dcs so could be on mn. I didn't want to be too outing.

I wouldn't say I was a racist but if posters say I am then OK.

If they just told you they voted for reform and they're from an African country they'll know it was you anyway when they read this post and you said word for word what you said to them, just admit you don't know where they're from.

TipsyRaven247 · 02/05/2025 15:52

Well, white men don't have the monopoly of mental stupidity.

So white women didn't vote for Reform then?

She but I don't think that. I think @Easypeas has got it.

Shame on you OP. You made an assumption about your neighbour based purely on their race.

If you took the time to stop believing all the crap in the media, you might find yourself slightly less ignorant.

FKAT · 02/05/2025 16:04

They were 'African' were they? You realise that's nearly 60 different countries covering 2 hemispheres? The fact you stereotype 'Africans' as immigrants that should vote a certain way suggests it's you that is the racist one. You imply that 'Africans' (many of whom live in the UK as highly skilled immigrants) should have a natural affinity with illegal immigrants.

What is the specific issue you have with them voting Reform? I'm really not clear what your issue is? I personally would never vote Reform because they are too small state for my tastes and most of them are blatantly incompetent and ill fitted to public office - but to be fair that applies to a lot of Greens and Lib Dems too.

Indeed. I was African too, until I naturalised at 32. But I suspect the fact that I’m white may mean I’m not one of ‘those’ Africans. I find it hysterical how people virtue signal their PC credentials and gasp with shock at perceived racism whilst being… well… completely fucking racist.

I do know. There's Africans from lots of different countries here.

They can vote for who the want too.

You don’t need to understand why someone has chosen a certain way.

Deciding in your mind who has voted for who based on their appearance is not cool.

Marylou2 · 02/05/2025 17:46

Oh bless you. I work with some of the most racist people you could ever meet. At first I was horrified but I now understand which groups, often members of the same religion hold grudges and regard others as inferior to their own. None of them are white!

Mrsdyna · 02/05/2025 17:47

Oh well seeing as they're African, why don't you go around to theirs and educate them about how they should vote in future?

minnienono · 02/05/2025 17:47

@ZigZagJigsaw

and different islands from the Caribbean dislike each other even settled in the U.K. though this seems to wane with each generation from my observation. We had a lady who wouldn’t sit in the same pew or the same table at coffee after church because of island rivalries! They left as children in the 50’s!

This.

He’s probably worked out that the country cannot afford to keep allowing illegal immigrants coming in on boats.
