I know the King and this is the key reason he met President Zelensky today
King Charles is doing exactly what he must - by extending a very public hand of friendship to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

He is meeting with Zelensky because his government told him to do so. Does anyone really think that Charles insisted on meeting him over the advice of the UK government? of course not. And if the UK government thought a meeting with Putin might help - well he'd be asked to do that too.

It would be pretty alarming to think the nominal non-political head of state was off making political/diplomatic gestures outside of his remit.

I saw something that mentioned Charlie Boy was wearing a blue suit with a yellow tie so he's favouring Ukraine's colours. Reminds me of the time when the Queen wore a brooch gifted to her by the Obamas when she had to host Trump. Speaking of the orange one, he will be not be happy about this given his mean girl level of hatred for Zelenskyy

The Queen's totally EU hat post brexit was another one.

OfficerChurlish · 02/03/2025 22:57

The "true colours" thing is from the MSN story, the first in the OP's set of links. It seems to have been slapped on by a careless editor; the story just says "King Charles has shown his continued support for Ukraine." I was hoping to see His Maj festooned in yellow and blue like a mutant Walmart ad and sporting a FUCK YOU PUTIN bracelet like Marie Yovanovitch, but I guess that would have been broken protocol.

Either way, I'm glad that the King did the meeting, glad that Starmer met with Zelenskyy at Downing Street, and glad that people showed up in both locations with a visual/vocal display of support for Ukraine. It is absolutely being reported internationally (I'm in the US at the moment) and coverage like this is useful to Ukraine. And, I think, it's at least slightly comforting to many Ukrainians to know that a lot of people internationally do care and they haven't been forgotten.

(edited because I can't spell)

This will make Donald Trump feel so bad.

Prince Charles 💪

Prince Charles? I have some sad news for you about Queen Elizabeth.....

I really wish the uk wasn't involved with all this crap

You clearly have no understanding of the significant danger of what is happening if you can just dismiss it as 'crap'. Starmer, in today's press conference said that "we are at a crossroads in history", and he is not wrong. Burying one's head in the sand has never made a problem disappear.

I think it's because people don't understand that we have a Constitutional Monarchy.

TriathlonTriathlonTriathlon · 02/03/2025 23:18

I don’t really understand the point of this thread. The King meets lots of people, the UK supports Ukraine.

His suit was grey with a light blue shirt and brownish tie.

agreed. Although I think the rights of the monarch should have been made crystal clear when Boris Johnson instructed the queen to prorogue parliament and she did it - she had no choice. Then the prorogation was declared unconstitutional.

Meeting the king or queen of the UK (there is no doubt EII had far more weight internationally) has a certain something - like saying look a centuries-old regime is lending its support to you - and look all these traditions and shiny things mean something too. Meeting the President of the USA in the oval office had a similar gravitas. As we've seen this week, these things can disappear.

JeanPaulGagtier · 02/03/2025 23:41

Who wouldn't feel for Zelensky after the bullying boys ganging up? Britain loves an underdog and a hero.

PandaTime · 02/03/2025 23:43

A lot of people showing their true colo(u)rs lately.

During the same state visit she wore a Ruby tiara that contains a Ruby reputed to ward off evil.

Remember the EU flag hat too? She was pretty smart about showing her views.

Jacquettes · 03/03/2025 00:41

I think the OP is being positive about Charles. I’ve read some of MsAmerca’s posts on Trump matters and I think she’s being complimentary here. (Unless I’ve mixed her up with another poster, but I don’t think I have).

In regard to soft power and leaders wanting to meet the monarch. I think it’s a feather in their caps for many of them. They have sought power and recognition (as well as some of them wanting to actually do good) and they would see meeting the British Monarch as part of that - a bit of stroking of their egos.

Trump himself obviously enjoyed the importance of meeting the late Queen - the state dinner - and also the pomp and circumstance laid on for him during his first term. I think this second term his ego may be inflated beyond that. He has posted an image of himself as King and he’s well aware he’s the leader of the most powerful country on earth (for now). I have wondered if he could very well want King Charles to visit him at MaraLago, his own little kingdom, in future ( he doesn’t seem to like Camp David). If his behaviour of the last week is anything to go by - he wants supplicants.

MsAmerica · 03/03/2025 00:51

Zonder · 02/03/2025 21:20

Do we know if the plan was always for them to meet or was it squeezed in after the White House debacle?

Good question. I'm guessing it's the latter.

I have to confess I don't fully appreciate the relevance of meeting Charlie boy. The last article might have answered that ( behind a pay wall). Is it merely a symbolic statement. I don't fully appreciate what Charles has to offer and his role in any of this.

Here's how I see it. Trump acted like a disgraceful, disrespectful bully toward Zelensky. But Trump is also very performative and status-conscious and loves the idea of parading with the U.K. top brass. Trump apparently fell like a ton of bricks for Starmer's clever ploy of the invitation from C3. Therefore, this is both an elegant and kind gesture to Zelensky, and a bit of a slap at Trump.

Sinkintotheswamp · 02/03/2025 21:30

I get the impression it was squeezed in. I don't think the King usually has guests at Sandringham on a Sunday tea-time?

That would make it even more meaningful.

OP posts:
MsAmerica · 03/03/2025 00:55

noblegiraffe · 02/03/2025 21:32

I think it was added onto the itinerary deliberately because Trump was so delighted by his very special invite to meet the King.

Zelensky getting to meet him first is a fuck you to Trump

EXACTLY. Thank you.

I'm surprised that apparently several of you didn't seem to notice that my title line is quoting the title of the article. You sound as if you think it was my invention.

I didn’t at first, until I clicked on the link. But given that the author of the article obviously has no clue what “to show your true colours” actually means, I think I’d probably have chosen a different title for my thread…

Needanadultgapyear · 03/03/2025 07:13

IMO it was a clever move Trump will see it as a less important meeting as Zelenskyy didn't go to a palace or castle to meet the king. He will fail to appreciate the nuance that being invited for afternoon tea at a private residence actually shows a different closure relationship than meeting formally at a palace or castle.

You know what these little symbols are “”? You put them around the words you are quoting. Then everyone knows they’re not your words.

However, the fact that you thought they made a good title suggest you don’t know what they mean.

Indeed. The King is the Head of State but a Constitutional Monarch. He's not going to do anything crass.

daisypetula · 03/03/2025 07:52

Zelensky said in the filmed session with Starmer that he had asked to meet the king and was delighted that he had agreed.
