Far right v far left

The description ‘ far right’ is banded about quite a bit these days; less so ‘far left’. So I was wondering what do those phrases mean to you?
What in your opinion makes someone far right or far left?

Nope, misleading point there.
Far Right and Far left are both very authoritarian and believe in a big state
Far right are authoritarian but not in the cause of a big state - they want a weakened, smaller state and power for big corporations instead, who they argue will do better for everyone (ie rich people). On this point I'd like to know what Reform will do to rein in the power of the tech bros and wealthy businesses owners in the interests of the ordinary folk they claim to speak for.

OP, what 'traditional conservative values' do you feel the current or recent Tories have thrown under the bus?

I'm a good old centrist, suspicious of all extremes.

@letsallchant , responsibility for self, a hand up rather than a hand out. So many. Old fashioned Conservatism to me is about reward for endeavour and a safety net for those in genuine need.

I'm happy to have a conversation with someone about politics if they ask in good faith.

@Maitri108 , I take it you are the arbiter of ‘good faith’ ?

‘Far left’ is someone who absolutely love Labour & wont hear a word against them, no matter what they do or say.

’’far right’ is anyone that dares to disagree with the above.

IMO.

That's not what being a snowflake means. It means don't be so sensitive.

You wanted a discussion on the far right yet haven't given your own view on what far right or far left means. You also don't seem to want to learn anything about it.

I've brought up the rise of the far right in Europe and the States but you're not interested enough to do a quick search and find out anything about it.

Why start a thread if you're not interested?

@Maitri108 , I was not being at all sensitive. How very odd that you formed that opinion.
My views are well known to me and I didn’t post in order to discuss them. While what you have bought up is of interest it is not what I was interested in. You may of course start your own thread for those things which interest you.

You've yet to prove me wrong but I'm patiently waiting. I'm looking forward to hearing your opinion.

Cool. I'll hang around and wait to see what your view is on the rise in the far right. I'm interested in your opinion.

@Maitri108 , “ The rise of the far right”. Forgive me but I was trying to understand what the far right (or left) exactly means. I’m not looking for further debate but you can start another thread.

OK, but presumably you don't mind discussing British politics? I asked earlier in response to a comment of yours

OP, what 'traditional conservative values' do you feel the current or recent Tories have thrown under the bus?

as that's what you said they'd done. Would be interested to know what you have in mind.

@letsallchant , I’ve since responded.

I'm happy here, waiting to hear your opinion. Anyone would think you don't believe in free speech and want to dictate what people talk about. That's authoritarian and would be classed as far right.

@Maitri108 , did I find a question that triggered you? Fascinating really that such a simple question can evoke such agitation.
It's late and I’m off to my bed. I do hope you sleep well.

I find it strange that you think someone waiting for an opinion is 'agitation'. You're an enigma and I'm looking forward to hearing your opinions. Sleep well.

Okay sensible question to you here. Do you agree that the rise of extremist views on the right (as per my definition of extreme vs far right) is due to disillusionment with economic austerity and deprivation. Those that lean to the far or extreme right seem to pose themselves as voices of the people ie farage and trump against the elite who are not helping the people at all (despite them being some of the richest people out there!).

It creates an in group v out group situation very rapidly where there needs to be a scapegoat which is unfortunately those who are religiously and culturally different (ie they’re not one of us!)

Of course explicit racism is also a factor here but there’s no coincidence that extremism comes about in times of poverty and social unrest

@Maitri108 , the views of those who wish to share them of what they consider is ‘far’ politically. The term gets used rather liberally and it would be interesting to understand what exactly people mean by it. But you know this. It’s quite a straightforward question really.

It's actually a complex question given the current climate. I agree that the term gets used liberally when discussing the left.

You can see on this thread that people are using far left to describe protesters and activists. I don't take it very seriously and I don't believe these terms are meaningless just because people don't know what they mean.

It's refreshing to see someone acknowledge their lack of knowledge and endeavour to learn. I wanted to know your opinion after six pages of responses to your question. Do you now understand what political extremity means? Do you at least grasp the basics?

@Maitri108 , as you understand well I was interested in learning what others believe. I know my views on the subject thank you.

OK, thanks. What policies or manifesto ideas from the previous Conservative government did you dislike because they departed from the above? If you're thinking that Reform now do this better, which of their policy ideas do you think are most promising?
