Far right v far left

The description ‘ far right’ is banded about quite a bit these days; less so ‘far left’. So I was wondering what do those phrases mean to you?
What in your opinion makes someone far right or far left?

My brother is far left. He supports violence against 'terfs', everyone he disagrees with is a nazi, he's a violent antifa activist. He's pro Hamas and a rabid TRA.

Far left and far right are two cheeks of the same arse.

Edited

Your brother is not "far left". He's an idiot.

I think it’s a fair point to be honest. It’s just fact that there isn’t as much as a far left following these days in comparison to the far right, which is gaining popularity at a much higher rate. You only need to take a look at social media and the rising popularity of certain parties to see that 🤷‍♀️

Which parties do you consider 'far right'?

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 25/02/2025 14:56

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 25/02/2025 14:36

@Pastelhp , still no one is defining what is actually meant by far right and far left. Can you help?

OK, you want definitions. Google can help.

But broadly speaking, a far left ideology rejects capitalism and the concept of private ownership altogether, and believes that everything should be shared equally between everyone.

A far right ideology is typically characterised by nationalist, xenophobic, homophobic, racist, religious fundamentalist, and/or other reactionary views.

Perhaps he can be both?

I see Gaza protestors and SWP actively recruiting every Saturday in my local city. Online, a local well known lefty town has highjacked the local groups. They are all Corbyn++. I think that all counts as a healthy and thriving far left presence at least in the south of the UK?

@PorridgeOatsSuck , I would agree. Do you have a view as to what constitutes the far right?

@Bromptotoo , well that’s my question really. What do far right and far left actually mean?

This is unbearable. Here, this explains the political spectrum as you're incapable of looking it up yourself.

Flubbore · 25/02/2025 14:59

EmmaMaria · 25/02/2025 14:56

Yes, yes he is.

A far left idiot.

He also calls himself trans femme non binary and an anarchist but is neither of those things in the way he actually lives his life.

@Maitri108 , I can look on google of course but I’m more interested to know what individuals consider to constitute far right and left. What do you think far left is by the way?

The poster wants a discussion about what people on mumsnet see as far left or far right.

You communicate with a very patronising tone.

I agree with the standard definition.

You have no idea whatsoever what far left means. I'm embarrassed for you.

@Maitri108 , could you spell it out for us please.

Far left is obviously communism. Not a huge amount of support for that these days.

Far right? Just watch the news.

@MrsBennetsPoorNerves , this is beginning to become frustrating. Could you possibly help by explaining what the difference is between traditional right wing politics and far right politics as you see it? Thank you.

I'm perfectly aware what the poster is attempting to do. My tone suits the thread.

Why don't you Google?

@SallyWD because Google won’t tell me what YOU and others here think and that’s what I’m interested in. Why is everyone being so evasive?

I just explained to you that I agree with the standard definition. I posted a link that spells out what that means.

SallyWD · 25/02/2025 15:10

This is from Wikipedia and is exactly how I would describe far right beliefs:

"Key views of various far-right groups include white supremacy, cultural nationalism, and the Identitarian Movement. Far-right groups and individuals disproportionately target ethnic minority and religious groups, LGBT+ groups, politicians, and public figures."

I've already said that far left is communism - to spell it out it's big state, sharing of wealth equally, focus on the community rather than the individual, a dislike of private ownership.
The far left is tiny in the UK compared to other countries.
I shared the Wikipedia definition of far right, which is spot on.

PorridgeOatsSuck · 25/02/2025 15:15

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 25/02/2025 14:58

@PorridgeOatsSuck , I would agree. Do you have a view as to what constitutes the far right?

Today (nazism or Stalinism is soooo 20th c), I would recognise far right as the gammons and young lads who try and burn down asylum hotels, people who talk about shooting refugees on the boat crossings (irl I have met these idiots). What I call America First are the unsavoury far right in the US which is concerned (more than Europe) with pursuit of hyper masculinity and control over women's bodies. This is why Andrew Tate has succeeded so well in his branding over the pond.

BarneyRonson · 25/02/2025 15:18

The problem is so much of the speech we hear is histrionic. People with the loudest, most insistent voices, who hyper react and over state their case. Nobody wants to say ‘your thinking is tainted by histrionic tendencies, stop talking for a while and try calm logic’. The media feeds off over statement and hysteria. Hence the inherent flaw in what is thrown around in the phrase ‘far right’.

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 25/02/2025 15:18

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 25/02/2025 14:44

Far left - trans activists
Far right -Nazis

Thats what comes to mind when I think of those terms.

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast , thank you at last someone who actually answered my question.

The far left post constantly about how companies should give up their profit margins to the workers. Hate farmers and wish to see land given up to them for free (or very cheaply) so they can occupy it with their caravans. They are militantly in favour of be kind....but obviously only to those they deem worthy (trans, ethnic minorities, non-jews, non-poshos). They hate inherited wealth as much as the far right hate immigrants. In fact, I think much of the UK wealthy have little idea how much they are despised by certain sectors of society.

JasmineAllen · 25/02/2025 15:22

IMO
far right = nazi party
Far left = DDR govt that was

Both are authoritarian and have little respect for human life and both are really shit options IMO.

MathiasBroucek · 25/02/2025 15:23

Far right has become meaningless. I've heard Boris and my former local MP (middle-of-the-road Tory) described as "far right" which is absurd.

The extemists on the left (Trans Rights activists, the hardcore critical race theory people) have MUCH better PR.... ("we're just trying to be kind to the vulnerable people $")

$ White woman can't be vulnerable, obvs

PorridgeOatsSuck · 25/02/2025 15:26

Both far left and far right approve of:

Burning books
Censorship of the media
Punishing the demons
Installing their own ideology by ripping out the old

This is why I loathe both ends of the spectrum. I have deep seated dread of authority and I think that's the big commonality between the two ends. They are so convinced they are right they steam roller dissent.
