Is anyone else a mix of depressed and scared about this scenario playing out? In a nutshell:

  • Musk reportedly donating £80m to Farage
  • Musk seeking UK citizenship via his grandmother's nationality in order to do ate and influence UK politics
  • Will use his skewed algorithm to boost his own X lists svc those of right wing mouthpieces - Tommy Robinson etc to destabilise UK electorate and undermine the government and Conservatives, resulting in a Reform win.

I see that Musk has gone full nutjob now. So people still think he's a force for good.

Absolute lunatic. Who the hell does he think he is? I was reading Daily Mail comments yesterday on Elon Musk and was pleased to see that even DM readers have had enough of him.

There is no mechanism for Reform to dump Farage. Reform is a limited company in which Farage has a controlling share. A party formation which I’m sure the other party leaders are secretly envious of.

I did not realise that. Interesting

Solanumdulcamara · 06/01/2025 12:20

Reform is a protest party. As well as getting several seats, it also helped hand many more to Labour helping them to such an overwhelming majority despite so little popular support. But what it isn’t is a mature party with properly formed policies, and its current set up doesn’t support the sort of internal discussions needed to mature. Hence it is unclear what anyone voting Reform gets for their vote.

Solanumdulcamara · 06/01/2025 12:26

In the meantime Musk seems to have gone far field. Which is great because it shows he is just a man with a range of thoughts and whilst some may be right you need to weigh them for yourself. It shows both the dangers and benefits to having a large platform on which he can broadcast his thoughts and people hear them unfiltered. As opposed to the backroom deals of other wealthy men interfering in politics.

Vance is a Theil fan not a Musk one.

This in spades. Vance also has a support base who don't gaf about Silicon Valley and whether Elon can get enough tech 🎓 bros from India or wherever. Then there's Zuckerberg , Bezos and many others besides. Trump has options. He will turn on Musk if the Maga nutjobs start to think he's sold them out.

Musk might want a civil war in England but its surely more likely to erupt in the 🇺🇸

What is it going to take for the UK government to pull its official Twitter accounts? He's literally calling for the US to overthrow the UK government.

That would be rather undemocratic and anti-free speech. Considering the removal of the government (calling a general election) was the very topic of a parliamentary debate today!

A response from Starmer here. Good to hear leaders of other parties backing him on this and calling out Musk. What a disappointment that Badenoch refuses to call out the abhorrent comments about Jess Phillips and merely jumps on the bandwagon.

In the meantime, on the same day as refusing a call for an inquiry into the systematic rape and torture of thousands of girls often drugged to gain compliance, abetted by the state, the Labour Party is using the Chinese-owned TikTok to put out a Tiktok with backing lyrics:

”You’re on the move and holding marijuana, you’re going to be naughty young girl relaunching
Go on the dick, naughty, shameless, sit on the dick, crazy about marijauna
Pay attention, the thing is crazy, I stop this bitch from getting naughty”

mugglewump · 06/01/2025 16:28

As an autistic person, he hyper-fixates and his current fixation is (far-right) politics. He cannot see anything from another's perspective, and his mindset is anyone less than a millionaire is scum. As a white, South African, gold-mine empire owner, he is implicitly extremely racist. As a meglomaniac, he is not content with being the world's richest man, he wants to the world's most powerful man. He will meddle away until he is bored.

There's. Already. Been. An. Inquiry.

Understand the rest of your post.

You think putting out those lyric in a TikTok, using a song that includes “just punch in a young girl’s pussy” in their comms alongside turning down a call for a further inquiry, shows that the Labour Party has learnt what is needed from that Inquiry? That there is not more to be learnt about how the establishment should respond to these crimes?

Edited

How would it be undemocratic and anti free speech for the government to choose an IT supplier whose boss isn’t calling for their overthrow by a foreign power?

If the boss of one of our company’s suppliers was badmouthing us in public they wouldn’t be getting any more business from us.

The song is popular on Tik Tok and an idiot in the Labour social media department didn’t think to translate the lyrics from Portuguese before using it in a clip.

Hopefully that idiot no longer has a job.

@Solanumdulcamara yet another example of someone who doesn't read the news properly or digest actual facts. Just sucking up the Musk narrative is lazy and uncritical. FYI there was a 5 year enquiry ending in 2022, the recommendations of which the last government failed to implement. Labour promised to in their manifesto and have so far had 6 months with an in-tray from hell to deal with, so let's just see what the next 2 years bring shall we?

X doesn’t supply IT. The government is not just a small business and for it to refuse to a use it a social media platform used by millions of voters because it didn’t like what the owner said is of course about free speech. But also about media’s role in holding the government to account. It would be sinister indeed if voters were only able to obtain news from the government on platforms that only said things the government approved of. And for the government to only listen to feedback they agreed with.

How many more victims until then?

And in the meantime you think it ok that their comms are using songs with lyrics about punching young girls in the genitals alongside their comms about the rape of girls? ‘Didn’t think to translate’ is a pretty poor excuse from a government communication department that then took all day to respond.

SuzieNine · 06/01/2025 19:46

@Solanumdulcamara of course X is an IT services provider to government, just like any other. It is no curtailment of free speech to switch to another provider, or indeed to stop using social media altogether and rely on traditional press briefings.

glowinggg · 06/01/2025 20:01

How many more victims until then?

@Solanumdulcamara this is so niaive. The new government isn't able to magically fix every problem on day 1, even if they had the funds to do so, which they don't. They can't say no more victims of sexual abuse starting on day 1 can they. Eg prison reform, NHS reform, early years, housing, rape courts, green energy... there are so many issues needing attention we are in a dire situation as a country. The issue is are they actually prepared to roll their sleeves up and try to make changes, which currently it seems they are- far more than the last government.

This tarring all politicians with the same brush is so tiresome and lazy. Your way of "thinking" is Elon Musk's dream. Lazy and impressionable, easily swayed and not interested in facts.

The issue with a song in another language with inappropriate lyrics used in an advert is not something I'm willing to overthrow the government over I'm afraid. Sounds like a rash decision by some comms person. Their comms has been terrible, and this was bad judgement but honestly that's all. Give it a rest.

So you would have been happy if the Tories had blocked The Guardian and The Mirror from attending its press briefings?
