So Rachel Reeves has solved it all

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 25/11/2024 16:27

Apparently, according to her, all funded, all recovered and public service funding all solved

'all done now' promised not to 'come back again' as everything is fully costed.

Problem is we know we can't trust them.

Currently watching live at the CBI.

Oh yes that's convinced me then.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 25/11/2024 16:33

? It is on all the news channels.

I'm so fed up with how all parties just talk down the opposition, it should be banned .

As should the term 'firm footing'

'The sums now add up'

I hope she and the government are held to this.

I'm watching , i don't trust her at all.

ProssecoSparkle · 25/11/2024 16:36

What does this mean exactly?

The books are now balanced and we have money to spend?

Tryingtokeepgoing · 25/11/2024 16:54

Solved what? Growth…? Nope, that’s down. Inflation…? Nope, that’s up. Unemployment…? No, that’s increasing. Cost of Living…? Nope, energy prices up, mortgage rates up, people’s income down. Confidence? Nope…that’s at an all time low. Public Sector Borrowing?…Nope, that was almost twice what was predicted last month. But, in terms of the causes, yes, she’s certainly proved what an economist could have told her… 😂

That the tory legacy for you. Inherit a global banking crisis and leave the biggest mess ever. No point judging a budget after a few weeks - lets see where we are in 5 years. If it doesn't work we can see if Badenock is right - the thing that is the problem is maternity leave is just too generous.

Zonder · 25/11/2024 17:15

I'm really doubting that she said it's all done now. I can't find anything suggesting that on the news sites I look at.

She insisted “we have drawn a line under the inheritance I faced” from the Conservative government and “we’re never going to have to do a budget like that again”.

“Public finances are now on a firm footing and public services are funded in a proper way.

“We’re not going to have to come back for more.”

“We’re not going to have to come back for more.”

Thats a level of hubris all politicians operate under. It always comes back to bite them on the bum.

Zonder · 25/11/2024 17:59

@MrsRobinsonsHandprints ok thanks - so the issue is your comprehension. She's not saying it's all solved. She's saying this has been a very difficult budget (thanks to the mess we are in). This budget isn't over - it will last a while.

She's right to draw a line under the inheritance she was given. I hope we never go back there.

AgnesX · 25/11/2024 17:59

Oh for god's sake give it a rest. If there was an answer don't you think one of the parties would have found it by now.

I don't think she's that arrogant to say anything like that.

Of course I am sure you are correct and the IMF and OBR are wrong. Did you study with Reeves 😂😂

I have no skin the game, didn’t vote for either and am comfortable outside the UK at the moment. But I think I’m allowed to comment, and no one I have spoken to I. The UK, Europe or the US is judging this budget favourably. Indeed, the downgrade to growth means that the tax take will now be lower than it would otherwise have been, more than offsetting the additional tax rises put in place. Talk about shooting your self in the foot!

EasternStandard · 25/11/2024 18:47

“we’re never going to have to do a budget like that again”.

Tbf it's pretty obvious it's not an option. £70bn on tax and borrowing has hit the private sector this time - which is coming back in figures

And the CBI talking about feeling betrayed

Precisely. At least she’s not living in fantasy land and handing out unfunded tax cuts like her predecessor.

Zonder · 26/11/2024 08:33

I'm quite annoyed at this thread title. I've watched as much as possible now and no way does she say she's solved it all.

Typical Tory on MN false spin.

She might well truly believe that. Nobody can see into the future 🔮 though. A lot depends on what happens in Washington. The Irish government have priced in a loss of £8 billion per annum if Nigel's big pal goes ahead with his tariff plans.

TizerorFizz · 26/11/2024 11:19

I thought her statement that nobody had an alternates to her business tax raid was utterly crass. Of course they did . This is really all about trust. She said she wants grow the economy and then stops that happening. She’s basically delivered a budget based on wage rises the Labour government agreed to in the public sector and has come after business to pay for it. She did not seem to realise what a precarious position many businesses are in.

Brexit has caused the economy to slow too. Labour need to see what can be done to negotiate a better relationship with the EU. Essentially we have no trading friends and are sidelined.

Reeves has no idea about business and would not listen. I think business leaders would be less angry if they thought the money to the nhs would actually improve anything! We all know it probably won’t. It’s just more hard earned money being poured into the black hole of the nhs and those who hold us to ransom by striking. This could happen year after year. My bet is it will.

Araminta1003 · 26/11/2024 11:20

I don’t think Reeves or Phillipson will last much longer. I expect Starmer’s sense of self protection will kick in and we shall soon see a shake up.

TizerorFizz · 26/11/2024 11:21

She is in fantasy land. Believing money given to the nhs improves the services offered! It does not. It funds wages, agency staff, compensation and wasted drugs.

BIossomtoes · 26/11/2024 11:28

TizerorFizz · 26/11/2024 11:21

They know that. They couldn’t have been clearer that the NHS needs reform but you can’t do that without money to improve the infrastructure. We have hospitals that are literally falling down, insufficient diagnostic equipment and far too much focus on treatment when money could be saved by focusing on prevention. Without more money, how will the shortage of GPs and dentists be solved?

TizerorFizz · 26/11/2024 11:47

You can make a start! Instead they want the money for wages but have no published plans at all. They won’t improve anything. Money doesn’t improve working practice and waste. So we pour more and more in to a wasteful organisation and expect improved outcomes? Won’t happen. Business knows this.

@Zonder , Ms Reeves has stated this on numerous occasions in interviews. I’ve seen her say it several times.
