I honestly can't decide if she's ploughing her own furrow regardless of the views of other MPs, Starmer can't interfere because of other turmoil.

Or whether Starmer is settling her up for a fall.

It's really perplexing.

I hadn't noticed that. I'm just puzzled as to why they're not all singing from the same hymn sheet. Don't they discuss decisions beforehand re the economy. They agreed on cutting the WFA before hand I thought, there was no dissent there

I keep hoping they’ll get tired of them soon.

Bromptotoo · 13/10/2024 18:24

Her surname is Reeves not Reeve.

Is what she's doing any different from how Chancellors have behaved throughuot the modern era?

Hatfullofwillow · 13/10/2024 18:34

She's a Labour Together pick.

Labour Together was first incorporated on 9 June 2015 as Common Good Labour by John Clarke, the former director of Blue Labour, the left conservative group

Other chancellors keep much more under their hat pre budget day. She would do well to follow that pattern. Rather than be shredded by the media in advance. The leaks are coming from somewhere.

They’re not leaks, it’s all scaremongering made up by the media.

Are you scared? It all seems to have left you with a negative view. She's damned whatever she does.

We don't have an independent press in the UK which is why Labour are getting ripped to shreds. Rich people don't like paying tax.

I understand that papers all have their own outlook. But was surprised to see the Guardian taking this stance.

PP said they were all repeating lies, which is depressing.

What stance? I just did a search through the Guardian and can't see what you're talking about. The scaremongering is coming from the right wing press frothing about Labour 'stealing' money.

MotiRoller · 13/10/2024 23:46

The leaks are coming from Reeves’ own people. They’re testing the water because they don’t want a repeat of the Trusss budget fuck up. Much better to leak some of their plans now and see what the reaction is. And yes sadly chancellors, thanks to the precedent set by Gordon Brown, effectively run the country.

Why sadly. I think getting the economy set right is the most important responsibility a government has

Not the Guardian I read

"How Labour promises have left Rachel Reeves with a giant budget headache | Budget | The Guardian" https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/oct/13/how-labour-promises-have-left-rachel-reeves-with-a-giant-budget-headache

How Labour promises have left Rachel Reeves with a giant budget headache

Frustration grows with chancellor locked away in Treasury and facing competing challenges for her historic speech

That's a speculative piece on the upcoming budget. I didn't say that the Guardian hadn't written about her.

Because the budget should be a government consensus led by the party leader not a rogue actor acting with impunity alone.

Are we not supposed to criticise the government any more? I don't remember being scolded about having a go at the Tories and there were threads everywhere about them. Labour is doing really badly so of course people will start threads discussing it.

Anyway. It's partly that Reeves is seriously out of her depth as her experience in finance seems to be much exaggerated, partly that she is blatantly lying to us eg removing WFA because there's no money as though she thinks no one knows she's been plotting to do it for a decade or more, and partly that Starmer is no leader and seems to be throwing a lot of women MPs under the bus, even Sue Gray when I think about it.

justasking111 · 14/10/2024 13:04

Rachel Reeves has worked outside of parliament when younger. Worked for the Bank of England, HBOS headhunted by Goldman Sachs. Her education shows that she is a very clever woman. She married a civil servant.

Her sister is a barrister and politician. Her brother in law was a politician now HOL.

I bet their family get togethers are very interesting.

I'd say quietly very capable to be Chancellor.

Which of the men Starmer has put in place is out of their depth? Is it just the women? Gray and now Reeves who've been given five minutes to prove themselves.

Both Gray and Reeves have long careers it hasn't been 5 minutes. I've no doubt all the men are equally out of their depth, especially Starmer, but none of them has been thrown under the bus as yet and there have definitely been massive mistakes such as Lammy's.

Her BoE role was fairly junior wasn't it? People do better academically all the time - I haven't got any A levels but did a degree a few years ago as a mature student and walked a first so I'm not that impressed.

I fail to see the relevance of spouse and family - my ma was a darts champion but I can't hit the board from 5ft, so what if her husband is a civil servant? 🤷🏻‍♀️

She's repeatedly lied about why she's removing the WFA, she's even said she can't manage her massive household budget so she's obviously a mistake.

BIossomtoes · 14/10/2024 15:18

Goldman Sachs don’t headhunt any old shit. They can recruit anyone they want.
