Just shed a tear. Am I insane? When he thanked his wife, I really understand the disappointment even if he deserved to be defeated.

Very gracious speech from him, I thought.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/07/2024 10:50

I liked his dig at reform about being from a family of immigrants.

Brefugee · 05/07/2024 10:51

i thought it was a good, gracious speech.
But i didn't shed a tear because i still believe he and his wife were in it to make money.

DoraMae · 05/07/2024 10:52

Gracious with a hint of coming together, rather than division.

hallucinatingmaybe · 05/07/2024 10:52

I'm no fan of Sunak and am so glad to see the back of the Conservatives but yes, it was a gracious speech.

bellinisurge · 05/07/2024 10:53

That was a good speech. Stuck it to reform.

Glad to see the back of him, still

That’s the last thing they need to do.

Superduper02 · 05/07/2024 10:58

Agree, it was gracious. Also pleased to see his public endorsement of his opposition, Keir Starmer.

It's nice to see politicians concede with grace, rather than trying to foment insurrection like Trump!

TheTripThatWasnt · 05/07/2024 11:10

It's about the only thing in the whole campaign that he got right. His words about Kier Starmer were very gracious.

SiriAlexa · 05/07/2024 11:27

Very well said. I think in different circumstances he could have been an excellent PM, but he inherited a mess from his party, not helped by Covid or the Ukraine war.

AnneLovesGilbert · 05/07/2024 11:29

It was excellent. I’m so incredibly grateful to live here and not America. The process works, it’s calm, measured, very speedy and a tad brutal but there is a proper sober process and we should be grateful for it. I wonder if Charles gave Rishi a hug.

BorgQueen · 05/07/2024 11:31

Has any other outgoing PM apologised like that?
I thought he was very dignified but he can afford to be, he can swan off just about anywhere without a backwards glance.

I think King Charles probably did do some honest sympathising. It's true. We will never know if Rishi could have been a great PM given the mess he inherited. Regardless of political persuasions, I don't think the country could have rewarded Tories with another term after such bad and fractious behaviour!

I thought that but apparently he has been voted as MP in his constituency Richmond, Yorkshire so will be taking it up.

He's going to keep going as leader of opposition until new LOO is chosen. I thought his speech was really gracious and I also noticed the dig at Reform.

Overtheatlantic · 05/07/2024 11:46

Until Trump Americans always had dignified handovers.

icelolly12 · 05/07/2024 11:48

I didn't realise he is only 44 years old. Far too young really to be a PM his life experience is zero.

Floralnomad · 05/07/2024 11:51

It was a nice speech but I think he is basically a very nice , polite person . I disagree with the poster who said he’s in it for the money , he may be in it for the power but definitely not the money .

MrMotivatorsLeotard · 05/07/2024 12:02

Yes, I thought so too. We could do with a bit more of that in politics.

On a separate but related note, I have found all of the gloating over former MPs having lost their seats really unpleasant. Whatever I think about the personality or politics of certain politicians, ultimately I have a level of respect for anyone who puts themselves out there to be a politician in this day and age. I would imagine that MPs have never received so much abuse and (constant) threats in days gone by as they do now. I often think what a thankless job it must be a lot of the time

I’ve seen so many people gloating and revelling in people’s defeat/humiliation and it really does not reflect well on us as a country.

Same as Blair?

I haven’t listened op but sounds like a good speech

I live in his constituency and he is generally nice and very polite. Attends public events and I've even seen him at none public things just minding his own business but was polite to people who spoke to him and had questions about government.

I also live in his constituency. He has committed to representing us "in the weeks, months and years ahead". So not rushing off to California as some predicted.
Rishi is a very good constituency MP and a very decent man. His speech was measured, dignified and honest.
