Who succeeds Sunak?

So presumably Rishi will follow the usual script and resign as Conservative leader.

Who replaces him? Of former contenders, Jeremy Hunt (just), Kemi Badenoch and Suella Braverman are still in the House of Commons. Are there any newer names who may put their hats in the ring?

Will he resign as an MP too? I can't see him staying on as a backbencher?

Radiatorvalves · 05/07/2024 09:16

Of those 3 I hope Hunt goes for it. He’s not my cup of tea but he’s not as awful as the others. That said, whether he gets it isn’t down to random LibDem voters on mumsnet (me), The Tory membership will almost certainly vote for a right winger like the 2 you mentioned…

Squareplate · 05/07/2024 09:18

I've just read an article suggesting that Farage may defect to the Tories to become leader...

Also, apparently, the leader doesn't need to be a standing MP, although that would be unprecedented.

Cleverly?

Boris

Boris

The party would love it, but he's enjoying life too much to want an actual job.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 05/07/2024 09:21

From the people who gave us Liz Truss and Sunak himself, high hopes are best avoided.,

He implied in his speech, in Northallerton, when the results were declared, that he will be staying on to represent his constituents.

Is he likely to go back on that?

Foxxo · 05/07/2024 09:24

I'm expecting Suella to make another bid for party leadership. But i don't care. They're all rubbish.

Westfacing · 05/07/2024 09:27

I don't think many people will care who succeeds Sunak - we've had enough of their leadership elections over the years.

Let them knock cobs out of each other - should be fun!

Lara333 · 05/07/2024 09:27

Please NOT Suella.
Having had dealings with her, she is dangerous, reproducing information as her own, misconstruing what is going on, getting involved with limited understanding and inflaming situations, just when issues had been calmed and resolved by all stakeholders.

And all to get her voice and views out there in the media.

Ozanj · 05/07/2024 09:28

I think it will 100% be Suella

Squareplate · 05/07/2024 09:30

Actually I thought the article I read about Farage was a one off off the wall piece, but it's in all the mainstream media. The Tory membership would love that...

Yep, a Barrister whose misrepresentation of the law around Gender Recognition Certificates was either ignorant or wilful deceit.

Darkmodem · 05/07/2024 09:32

Boris is obsessed with repeating the success of winston Churchill and to make a comeback so I wouldn’t rule it out once he’s made enough money to send Mrs Johnson’s kids through private school like the other 4 (obviously he now needs to find another 20%). The only other candidate rabid enough to placate the far right would be Farage.

If the tories had been sensible in the first place and elected Hunt, they’d still be in power as it would’ve been the battle of the John Majors for both parties and better the devil you know.

Labour congratulating themselves on the ‘Leadership’ of KS are deluded. They’ve won because of the Tories eating themselves. Yet again. Putting up a candidate who had received the same fine as Boris over partygate was the very definition of insanity.

Brandonsflowers · 05/07/2024 09:33

I agree with the people saying Farage will defect to the Tories. The right wing love him almost as much as he loves himself.

💯. He’s digging out his finance bro vest and looking at houses in Silicon Valley right now would be my guess.

Boris

Boris Johnson is enjoying making squillions.
I think it is highly unlikely that he would want to go back to earning a PMs salary.
He is making a small fortune on the after dinner speaking circuit

Dear God no. As was once said about Howard, ‘there is something of the night about’ her.

kezzykicks · 05/07/2024 09:39

I think it will be Kemi Badenoch

Cameron?

Still smarting over brexit and the nation hasn’t forgotten he threw a hissy fit and fucked off after his gamble failed (and in the words of that sage Danny Dyer) ‘put his trotters up in the south of france’

I hope it's Suella . She's got the balls to stand up and say what she thinks

Squareplate · 05/07/2024 09:41

I think I'd rather Farage than Braverman.

If the Tories ever want to be a serious party again, the first thing they neeed to do is sort out their leadership selection process. The small number of members who get to do it currently are stark raving mad...and would take Farage if they can get him.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 05/07/2024 09:41

I'm not sure Hunt will try again - he's tried and failed twice.

Suella and Badenoch are definite possibilities.

Cleverly may stand, he'd be slightly more tolerable.

I guess it depends on the make up of the remaining 120 or so Tory MPs. Are they a mix? Are they more right leaning? More central?

The leader of the opposition doesn't need to be an MP generally, however internal Conservative Party rules say that the leader of the party does. Those could be changed I guess, if they wanted to.

Bromptotoo · 05/07/2024 09:41

kezzykicks · 05/07/2024 09:39

That.

Unless there is a convincing One Nation type and the system is changed so the membership don't get the choice.

In fact, if Sunak stays on, learning the lessons of selecting Johnson and then Truss could be his legacy.
