Who succeeds Sunak?

So presumably Rishi will follow the usual script and resign as Conservative leader.

Who replaces him? Of former contenders, Jeremy Hunt (just), Kemi Badenoch and Suella Braverman are still in the House of Commons. Are there any newer names who may put their hats in the ring?

Will the party membership really vote for a Nigerian woman?

SirChenjins · 05/07/2024 09:47

If it’s Suella then the party can look forward to losing even more seats at the next election. People are fed up of extreme right wingers who display utter contempt for the majority of the UK.

They're going to be irrelevant for probably at least 10 years so who cares? Remember when they went through three leaders (Hague, Howard and Duncan-Smith - not sure if in that order) under Blair's reign.

They can go and fight amongst themselves for as long as it takes...

Summerfreezemakesmedrinkwine · 05/07/2024 10:01

I'm hoping it'll be Kemi. If the Tories don't manoeuvre into a proper centre right position that aims to represent the views of conservative voters then you leave a vacuum to the right that will be fertile ground come 2029.

Unlikely. They voted Truss rather than a man of colour. No chance in hell Badenoch, Braveman or Cleverley would get the vote of the party faithful....

Hunt on the other hand is white. As is Cameron - and he did come back to the cabinet.

radio4everyday · 05/07/2024 10:12

Hunt probably has the sense to sit on the back benches for the next few years of chaos in the party and stand for leadership some time down the line.

Yep, a Barrister whose misrepresentation of the law around Gender Recognition Certificates was either ignorant or wilful deceit.

How did she misrepresent it? Actually asking, not arguing

Bells3032 · 05/07/2024 10:15

For my money the front runner is Cleverely - reckon that was part of the random move from Foreign Office to Home Sec last year.

Other runners i reckon we might see that we haven't before i think may include Atkins.

Setting out what I understand the law to be. Not expressing a view on the Trans/GCF debate.

The issue was around young adults with gender incongruence and allowing them to present in their preferred gender and be called by appropriate names/pronouns. Braverman asserted that his should not be allowed as one has to be 18 to get a GRC.

What the law says is that you have to be 18 and have lived in your acquired gender for two years. You don't need a GRC to be recognised in your acquired gender. Most trans people don't have one. Neither has it more than an incidental relationship to hormones or surgery. If you want one at 18 you need to be living in your acquired gender by 16.

Nothing in law prevents 16yo Stephanie deciding they want to be known as Stephen, dressing etc in male clothing etc and asking their teachers to address them in their preferred way.

Yes. That's what Hague should have done when Blair got in. The next leader is caretaker as starmer has his honeymoon period. Serious contenders should be the next one not this one. In fact sunak should stay on then step aside when people realise the grass is not actually greener under starmer

Oh I see, thank you

Tom Tugendhat

He implied in his speech, in Northallerton, when the results were declared, that he will be staying on to represent his constituents.

Is he likely to go back on that?

I suspect he will stay as long as he feels is decent and then will F off.
I think Hunt would be the best option as he is slightly less vile than most of the others but The Tories have gone so far to The Right now (even though that didn't stave off Reform) that they will go for the usual
It would be great if The Tories would now actually take a reaaly good look at what they have become and made some real changes to return to the party I used to Vote for but I doubt it

Bromptotoo · 05/07/2024 11:05

Well he's now resigned as leader but will stay on until his successor is appointed.

Will that happen ASAP or will there be time for reflection with a new chair of the 1922 committee etc?

UneTasse · 05/07/2024 11:14

They'll pick Kemi Badenoch, but they should pick Jeremy Hunt.

Gender identity aside, I disagree with her on almost everything, but she does at least seem to be level-headed, clever and principled, none of which can be said of Suella Braverman. Is Cleverly good enough? I honestly don't know.

Reform weeded out the more right-wing VOTERS but that doesn't mean that that Conservative party MEMBERS who voted Reform aren't still members with voting rights in a leadership race and a desire to choose the most right wing candidate.

If I was the Conservatives I wouldn't put it to a party vote if I could at all avoid it and I would just put in someone non-inflammatory and hardworking to help rebuild the idea of being sensible (Hunt) so I could keep the party out of the news as much as possible for the next 5 years.

Such a pity the Lib Dems aren't the opposition. It would have been lovely to fully see the back of the Tories.

Tom Tugendhat. Is my.guess too
