Surprised at the lack of door knocking by candidates

Not one single politician has knocked on our door. I am a little irritated by this. We have a Labour MP and a Labour run council. I think they are taking our constituency for granted. Anyone else surprised by the lack of canvassing? Or maybe they only actually knock on doors when they are being filmed for TV! Maybe they are all scared of our reactions!

We're a safe labour seat and have had everyone knock including labour themselves , right down to people with leaflets with Nigel farage on them 🤢

Borka · 23/06/2024 17:54

We've had only Labour knocking, and leaflets from Labour & Tories. It's a traditionally Labour area which is now very marginal because of boundary changes.

WelshNerd · 23/06/2024 17:54

A lot of canvassing, for the labour party at least, is very data driven.

However, with constituency sizes increases, if nobody has knocked on your door, it's probably because they don't have the volunteers to get around everyone.

In my constituency there are 74,000 people so we'd have to speak to 2000 a day during a 6 week election campaign. It's not possible.

User135644 · 23/06/2024 17:56

Your vote doesn't matter in a safe seat, the joy of our voting system.

This election is more unique in that there's not really any safe Tory seats because of reform. But Labour will breeze it in their safe seats so why bother? Just the reality of a shit system.

Churchview · 23/06/2024 18:01

I was sitting in my garden yesterday evening and our Labour candidate came up the path to chat. Just in awe of his dedication at 8.30pm on a sunny Saturday evening.

We received a Tory leaflet through the post. It's lining the compost bin.

dontcryformeargentina · 23/06/2024 18:01

I'm in traditional Labour seat. No door knocking in our area. They are in for a surprise from me. I've spoken to my neighbours - same sentiment

Fourchairs · 23/06/2024 18:03

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I think if I had been out (I'm in a lot due to working from home), my neighbours would have told me.
It bothers me that they don't come round because I think politicians should actively be out and about during the election campaign in their own constituency, earning the votes (especially as we never see them in the constituency any other time). Even in the town centre yesterday, none of the parties were out (vibrant centre on Saturdays). But yes. Labour assume this seat is in the bag so I get it that they don't bother coming out.

I'm in a Tory seat that could go labour, and where the Lib Dems did well at the recent local elections and none of them have knocked on our door.

I wonder if they just find it a far less effective use of resources compared to online stuff. It's very time consuming and probably doesn't convince that many people.

Churchview · 23/06/2024 18:08

Oh, should have said I'm in a safe-ish Tory seat where the MP is NEVER seen in our town at any time.

In the lead up to the GE Labour have had a stall in the market square every Saturday for the last six weeks.

Redshoeblueshoe · 23/06/2024 18:08

I'm in a very safe Labour seat, my MP is constantly posting pictures of him canvassing in other boroughs.
I've only had 2 leaflets both from the Workers Party

PickledMumion · 23/06/2024 18:09

Our very safe conversation seat went lib dem at the last by-election. Both lib dem and tory chucked everything and the kitchen sink at it then, but it's been radio silence from everyone this time round.

I find it very surprising. Our current lib dem MP is very local, and knows full well that he's only in as a classic by-election protest vote, and that he's absolutely not guaranteed his seat. Tories also know they still have a lot of support here, and that the farming community are terrified of a Labour govt. There's everything to play for - why is no one playing the game?!

Churchview · 23/06/2024 18:12

farming community are terrified of a Labour govt.
I've seen no Tory posters outside farm gates around Dorset and Somerset this time and normally they are everywhere. Farmers seem disenchanted with this incarnation of the Tories.

justasking111 · 23/06/2024 18:14

I've just had a peek on FB, labour, Tories, plaid and lib Dems are out canvassing, but not daily say two or three times since the election has been announced. No-one seems very enthusiastic about this election in my patch.

yeesh · 23/06/2024 18:14

I live in a Tory safe seat, never had anyone canvas in the 20 years I’ve lived here. Had a lot of leaflets though

For the Tories at least I think it's simply lack of resources. It takes lots of people to mount a canvassing campaign, and to have stands in town centres etc. And I've read that many local associations are now literally down to two or three (elderly) volunteers who are prepared to do it.

Local councillors used to be the backbone of campaigns, and remember the Tories have recently lost hundreds of those in the local elections. I'd imagine the prospect of the reception on the doorstep also adds a lot of reluctance.

Basically it's the party's conduct over the last fourteen (or more particularly three or four) years coming home to roost.

TeenDivided · 23/06/2024 18:21

I'm in a close Tory/LibDem seat. I have had a LibDem person door knocking, so discussed protection of women's rights with her.

LuckysDadsHat · 23/06/2024 18:25

No one here either and not even a single leaflet put through the door. An absolute disgrace from the local candidates. We are in a big tory majority seat and I really hoped candidates would be out campaigning to get rid of the tory twat.

You're right - I've not seen/heard anyone publicly supporting the tories, just a lot of doom-mongering about "when" Labour gets in. I suspect that when push comes to shove, though, a large number of people round here will still turn up and put their x in the conservative box.

Eviebeans · 23/06/2024 18:30

In a traditionally safe conservative area. Nobody has knocked or posted a leaflet which is really annoying as I would love to talk to candidates for various reasons

itsprettyoutside · 23/06/2024 18:33

Had lots of leaflets but no door knockers. 'Safe Tory seat' around here but I still think this election could throw up some surprises. It's not a time for politicians or local candidates to be getting lazy.

elliejjtiny · 23/06/2024 18:35

We've had the liberal democrat candidate come round. Fil harassed him about his policies and made fun of his trousers. I told the man that he had my vote and told FIL to go away and harass his own candidate.

whynosummer · 23/06/2024 18:37

We are a safe seat, and our MP is out supporting candidates who are challenging incumbents in surrounding constituencies, which I am very happy for them to do. We've still had their team knocking, but I couldn't chat to them as I was just coming out of the shower so I just called my support out the window and asked for some window posters etc.

I do feel my MP's time is better spent supporting new, less secure candidates right now, and they are a good MP all round, so I don't expect them to come round selling sand to the Sahara.

They seem to have Vote Green posters up in the areas of Dorset and Somerset I've visited recently so maybe that's the way people will lean.

TheDogsMother · 23/06/2024 18:38

Our seat has been Tory continuously since it was created in 1997 and no one has ever door knocked. Not the Tories because winning is a given and not any other parties because there is no point. Well lo and behold I spotted the mighty Andrew Griffith in our tiny town schmoozing the locals at the farmer's market. I've never seen him anywhere before so I guess he thinks this bluer than blue seat may not be so safe anymore.
