Has labour's views on women's rights changed?

SplitFountainPen · 23/05/2024 14:56

Have labour sorted out their views on women's rights (such as men identifying as women meaning they can remove women's rights to sex based spaces/medical professionals etc) since the recent shifts in understanding or are they still a no go?

OP posts:

No. They are an absolute danger to women (and children). Rosie Duffield rocks though.

AnneLovesGilbert · 23/05/2024 15:01

Nope.

MaryBethMayfair · 23/05/2024 15:09

This a major point of contention for me too. I just don't know who to vote for (I'll wait for the usual leaflets but don't hold out much hope for some epiphany literature)

Tory: Corrupt, morally incomprehensible and have run the country into the ground

Labour: A danger to women

Reform: Too extremist for me. I think they would start bringing in abortion laws similar to USA

SNP: I'm in Scotland. As above for Tories. Corrupt and have made a right mess of things.

Who's left? Greens or Lib Dems who will likely sell their soul to the next big party in line. I've been bitten by Lib Dems before!

Both completely in thrall to gender ideology. In the case of the Greens, actively throwing GC members out of the party (though court cases are ongoing on this).

ehb102 · 23/05/2024 15:19

Nope. As a radical feminist I believe my oppression is based on my biology, and we won't be able to address sex based inequalities under Labour when we are not allowed to name them or exclude men from anything.

KohlaParasaurus · 23/05/2024 15:24

No, Labour have given us no good reason to believe that they won't push through self-ID as soon as they're in power. Like other former staunch Labour supporters, I have a dilemma.

Bromptotoo · 23/05/2024 15:30

If you start from the viewpoint that there's something called 'Gender Ideology' then you're probably going to miss the point.

Nothing in what Labour says they will consult on, simplifying the process to get a Gender Recognition Certificate, presents any more of a threat to (biological) women than the system we've had for the last 20 years.

EasternStandard · 23/05/2024 15:34

They’re pretty much proposing Self ID by GP so no

I don't think that's necessarily the case. They've said one Medic rather than current two but not necessarily a GP. GPs aren't to keen on the idea.

NachoHat · 23/05/2024 15:42

Nope. This is why I can't vote for them. Or the Greens. Which leaves Tory or independent! It's a nightmare.

fatphalange · 23/05/2024 15:42

Shower of shit. I'm not voting for any of them. It would've been Labour but they're a danger to women now, so no.

Bromptotoo · 23/05/2024 15:44

Have the arrangements we've had for the last 20 years made women unsafe?

IMHO there's a lot of scaremongering going on.

FWIW, I know some very trustworthy insiders in Lib Dems who say that Clegg, far from getting all slippery and reneging on his promises spent his entire time fire fighting far more aggressive policies and although he couldn't honour his promises, he blocked a lot of really harsh social policies from coming through. i trust my sources on this and changed my opinion on that coalition.

I'd love to trust Labour but they have a history of inbuilt blokish misogyny not helped at all by Starmer not knowing what a woman is, so I'll vote Lib Dem in my constituency which luckily will keep the Tories out.

Will you tell them this? I wonder if it would make a difference if loads of women write to them and explain they are Labour supporters socially and economically but cannot vote for a party that denies women's fundamental rights

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/05/2024 15:51

No. Every time they've said something which indicates that they might be on the way to sanity in this issue, the next thing they say makes me go 'Oh. No, you're still willing to throw women under the bus by pretending you believe TWAW'. And let's face it, it is just a pretence. Does anyone think KS would be unable to distinguish a real woman from a TW if he were after a date?

oldwhyno · 23/05/2024 15:59

I'm voting for Reform. Policy intentions here:
Our Contract - Contents - Reform UK (reformparty.uk)
Lot's of good stuff to sort this mess out.

ComfyButFrumpy · 23/05/2024 20:12

Reform are actually looking sensible

Don’t you think it’ll just end up helping out Labour?

Due to our electoral system

Vote Tory for women’s rights?

I think I might have entered a parallel universe 😳

The party that keeps nominating, then withdrawing candidates after they are outed as slavering racists, conspiracy loons, completely inactive, or in one case... dead... is "looking sensible"?

Pretty much this.

Yes. Compared to the other options.
I was refering to the contract linked by pp, but accept that wasn't obvious.

I know, right???

If you’d told me this was going to be the position 10 years ago, I’d have laughed. But I had no idea and would not have predicted that Labour were going to throw women under the bus and then stubbornly double down, despite the issues being made plain to them. Why are they deliberately and knowingly pursuing misogynistic policies that harm women?

Labour need to sort themselves out so that we can vote for them again. The fact that the Tories are being viewed as a better bet for women to vote for should be making Keir and the rest of the Labour top brass hang their heads in shame.

AlienatedChildGrown · 23/05/2024 20:40

I’ve just today discovered I have had my right to vote returned to me.

Since the beginning the only party I could find that could clearly state the facts of human biology, and seemed surprised other parties were struggling to, was the SDP.

So if I can navigate the “give me my vote back” online rollercoaster, I’ll be voting for them.

Previously I only ever voted Labour. There is no way in hell I’d ever vote for them again after this 10 year long (so far) debacle. I’ve discovered Covington’s Gate, and am beginning to think that there is no gate Labour won’t kick over if it means they can indulge in a bit of performative halo polishing.

I don’t care if it’s a wasted vote. After being without it for so long I want it to stand for my most strongly held beliefs. And numero uno is that if you can be persuaded to flatter an invisible cloak because it is socially or politically convenient to do so, then you are the last person anybody should be voting for.

Because without reality being a settled subject you can’t help people suffering from the harsh realities of life. You’ll be too busy pandering to people waggling an identity/current flavour of “woe is me” to notice the people who are really suffering. Mostly because they don’t have the time, energy or puff to wander around conferences, TV stations and podcasts wibbling about how hard done by they are.

Real people with very real problems need politicians who defend reality with the gusto of “this is a hill I will die on”. Brava to the few (mostly female) politicians from all parties who took a stance early on despite the brickbats they got hurled at them. Any of them would get my vote if my last address was in their constituency. But it wasn’t. So SDP here I come with my big fat X of endorsement.
