Phrases politicians use that annoy you

I don’t like it when politicians respond to a question with ‘ Look, …..’

What annoys you about the way politicians answer ( or don’t answer) questions?

I came on to the thread to give the example of "Look ... " but you got there before me, OP. Grin
Tony Blair started it. I HATE its implication that the questioner has failed to understand something, and the politiician, though slightly exasperated by the lesser minds around him/her, is magnanimously, engagingly, affably willing to spell things out in terms that they can understand. Yuk.

Absolutely this.
Richard Osman also says it CONSTANTLY... perhaps he's hoping for a career in politics?
Also 'let me be clear' but several pps have beaten me to it.

RafaistheKingofClay · 07/05/2023 19:45

I have been very clear about this - related to’let me be clear’ but usually after they have not answered a question several times.

Hardworking families seems to be being replaced with ‘everyday working people’ which is a euphemism for people not on strike.

Yellowdays · 11/05/2023 18:59

"What the public really want"

Total bullshit alert.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 11/05/2023 19:12

When they claim to feel 'passionate' about something and it's never anything useful.

JauntyRedShoes · 13/05/2023 01:05

Let me be perfectly clear, nothing is off the table, we are all in this together. I’d rather be dead in a ditch and let me be absolutely open and honest because our message is very clear. That’s a great question and the pm is doing a great job and has my full support.

CherryRipe1 · 13/05/2023 01:41

We are working towards blah blah. When challenged on lack of action: What we have done is. . (fuck all), we've invested££££ into xxx. We need to engage in a conversation with /engage in a dialogue with or engage at a grass roots level. It's like they've all gone to the same wanky-speak classes.

Hillbilly · 13/05/2023 01:59

The word RIGHT in everything - "it's right that we....." "the right thing is..." "it's only right that...."
It's a new thing in the past few years and I feel like they are trying to imprint it in people's minds. Wankers.

PolkadotZebrasAndStripyGiraffes · 13/05/2023 02:27

"The many and the few"

"In droves" 😤

Especially the second one. I really hate it and can't articulate why. Perhaps because so many people parrot it all the time?

"Take back control" 🙄🙄🙄

"Brexit means Brexit" was a particularly egregious nonsensical and infantilising slogan.

"What 'the people' want is..." 😒

So presumptuous for them to tell us what we want and I resent the idea that people are some homogenous lump who all think exactly the same thing. And in any case usually whatever the politician has said to complete this sentence is usually the opposite of what most people seem to be saying when I speak with them/ write in their comments on various news websites/ say in opinion polls on the topic.

PolkadotZebrasAndStripyGiraffes · 13/05/2023 02:30

Oh and "it's fair that we... [insert massively unfair and unworkable proposal]"

Earlydancing · 13/05/2023 02:36

They always talk about "hardworking families' as if single, childless people aren't hardworking and don't count. Ugh.

Goodread1 · 13/05/2023 02:37

Robotic body language and phrases that they think will get into psyche (mind) of the UK 🇬🇧 Nation, to unlock the Holy grail of what will make swathes of people want to make any effort to vote for them in the first place.

PolkadotZebrasAndStripyGiraffes · 13/05/2023 02:40

Earlydancing · 13/05/2023 02:36

They always talk about "hardworking families' as if single, childless people aren't hardworking and don't count. Ugh.

A very odd phrase, considering child labour is frowned upon!

I wish they'd have the respect to speak to us like adults and were bright enougj to communicate nuanced points and evidence-based policy proposals and trade-offs rather than spout utter nonsense and slogans.

PolkadotZebrasAndStripyGiraffes · 13/05/2023 02:42

Their ignorant, childish, vulgar behaviour jeering at each other is very unprofessional also. It's embarrassing that these are the people that are meant to represent us.

PolkadotZebrasAndStripyGiraffes · 13/05/2023 02:47

They cannot even express themselves clearly and calmly without resorting to tiresome and irrelevant ad hominem attacks and do not even have enough respect for the public to be transparent and answer properly the questions they are asked then there is absolutely zero hope of these people having sufficient judgement, intellect, vision or skills to implement anything worthwhile.

gloriousmulch · 13/05/2023 06:05

As someone's already said, 'let's just be very clear about this.'
And describing justified criticism as a 'witch hunt'

Earlydancing · 13/05/2023 07:19

That every door they knocked on the homeowners were only talking favourably about an issue they're supporting or criticising an issue the other party are supporting.
Total lies. Because we all know when they knock on a door, the only thing people say is, fix the bloody roads.

Inthedarkagain · 11/06/2023 16:45

'We're focusing on getting the job done' when doing literally NOTHING

'Getting the big stuff right" while getting it very wrong.

Blaming everything on a war they should never have got involved in.

upinaballoon · 27/06/2023 23:15

'Working people' when they mean 'working-class' people but are too scared, prattish, coy about saying it.

In fact, I expect most middle-class people work, and members of the aristocracy, even if they are being jolly nice all round and checking on the vegetable sales near the coffee corner, which is not the same as doing a 12-hour shift in a pea-freezing factory, are also working.

This implication that only the working classes work is twaddle.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 28/06/2023 00:12

" It's complicated ... "

Often prefaced with "Look, ..."

Usually when it's really simple - Yes/No

Restinggoddess · 28/06/2023 12:50

‘We have targets ….’

‘Now we have monitoring of sewage into the sea … bills will have to go up’

‘The average person ….’

‘If water companies don’t provide returns they won’t be able to raise the money to fix the problem ‘

Another one for

‘Let me be clear…’ followed by some waffle

Constantly using the interviewer’s name to appear friendly and trustworthy

’Let’s be clear, Laura…’
’If I can just answer the question, Laura…’

(Boris loves this)
