Phrases politicians use that annoy you

I don’t like it when politicians respond to a question with ‘ Look, …..’

What annoys you about the way politicians answer ( or don’t answer) questions?

OP posts:
Greenshake · 23/04/2023 23:54

When they answer the question they want to rather than the question they have actually been asked.

BearFacedCheekGrylls · 23/04/2023 23:56

what They say when Their mouths are open

RenoDakota · 23/04/2023 23:59

"Let's be clear about this."

Princessdebthe1st · 24/04/2023 00:03

“I think what the British people really care about/really think we should be focused on is …….” before failing to answer the question they were actually asked. Don’t you dare to presume to know what I care about (because it is almost certainly not what you are going to say) and even if by chance you do land on something I care about, don’t you dare use it to avoid fulfilling your obligation of being held to account to your electorate.

AnElegantChaos · 24/04/2023 00:16

'Look' raises my hackles too, Blair was awful for it then Cameron seemed to copy him.

Annoyingnamechangerperson · 24/04/2023 00:18

Level up / levelling up who came up with that one.
Every time I hear a politician say it I cringe.

Restinggoddess · 24/04/2023 00:19

Nicola Sturgeon also uses ‘Look…’

Well at least she did. Once you notice it they all seem to say it

Brilliant responses folks

"I/we aim to"
Well I aim to win the lottery but it doesn't mean it's going to happen....

Ketzele · 24/04/2023 00:31

Hardworking families

Coffeeandbourbons · 24/04/2023 00:33

‘The question is..’ no buddy the question is what you’ve been asked and you’re not answering. I don’t care about what you think the question is.

ChevreChase · 24/04/2023 00:41

"I don't recognise that," when a fact is inconvenient. It's either true or not true; you can't just decide you won't acknowledge stuff when there's evidence!

Oopstheregoesanotherrubbertreeplant · 24/04/2023 01:28

Hard pressed families / hard working families.

The proportion of single person households ranges from 35.0% in Scotland (highest) to 23.9% in London (lowest). That's an awful lot of voters that don't seem to matter to them.

Currently it's "reasonable".

Everything g is where "reasonable". If you can "reasonably".

I feel it's a cop out!

WandaWonder · 24/04/2023 04:44

'With respect'

WeWereInParis · 24/04/2023 06:25

When they say "I'm not going to answer hypotheticals"

Why not? Thinking about possible future scenarios and how you'll deal with them seems pretty bloody important for a politician. And they all happily use hypotheticals when it suits them.

maddy68 · 24/04/2023 15:48

Get Brexit done

Sarahconnor1 · 24/04/2023 15:50

'Let me be clear'

SausageinaBun · 24/04/2023 15:53

"They are just playing politics with..."

It's all politics and each party is happy to "play politics" when it suits them. So calling it out is just so hypocritical.

Restinggoddess · 24/04/2023 18:22

I am almost looking forward to the return of Question Time so I can play MN bingo with these phrases.

My DH says he doesn’t like the phrase ‘we / I think this is fair and right’ … when it is clear it isn’t a fair and right for anyone

Justmuddlingalong · 24/04/2023 18:25

"lessons have been learned."
It's like a bloody catchphrase wheeled out when the shit's hit the fan.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 24/04/2023 18:42

'We're doing this because it's the right thing to do.' A particular favourite of that arse Cameron. No mate, you're doing it because it looks good and you want to. Right or wrong doesn't come into it.

eddiemairswife · 24/04/2023 18:44

"What my constituents are really interested in...." In your dreams mate!

Random789 · 24/04/2023 18:57

I came on to the thread to give the example of "Look ... " but you got there before me, OP. Grin
Tony Blair started it. I HATE its implication that the questioner has failed to understand something, and the politiician, though slightly exasperated by the lesser minds around him/her, is magnanimously, engagingly, affably willing to spell things out in terms that they can understand. Yuk.

mach2 · 07/05/2023 08:40

"I make no apology for..."

Herod probably said it when he went after the firstborns.
