Can we talk about Labour's plans?

There's been so much despair about the Tory tax cuts this week. For those who would consider voting Labour at the next GE but have yet to decide. What do you think of this new policy idea?

In a nutshell they propose getting the UK to an entirely self sufficient state and net zero by the end of the decade. Permanently lowering bills, zero reliance on other countries (eg dictatorships) for our energy and also creating thousands of jobs.

I think it sounds pretty bloody sensible and I actually feel excited about this prospect. The first time I've felt excited about any policies from anyone for years. It is so much more forward looking than Trussenomics and would actually benefit ordinary people and families instead of just the highest earners.

Also this is what we should be focussing on as the main issue, rather than all the culture wars etc. in my opinion. This is the stuff that actually affects peoples everyday lives.

Quote pasted below and link to full article for anyone who's interested.

Keir Starmer will pledge to deliver a new era of economic growth and permanently lower energy bills by turning the UK into an independent green “superpower” before 2030, through a massive expansion of wind and solar energy.
Announcing details of the plan exclusively to the Observer, the Labour leader says he will double the amount of onshore wind, triple solar and more than quadruple offshore wind power, “re-industrialising” the country to create a zero carbon, self-sufficient electricity system, by the end of this decade.
Starmer says the move – far more ambitious than any green policy advanced by the Tories and the most far-reaching of his leadership so far – would release the British people from the mercy of “dictators” such as Russian president Vladimir Putin over energy bills.

I'm up there with you and it's really not all about toilets!

I have a feeling if they get their red wall voters back they’ll dump their woke student ones. They’ve realised they can’t win elections with the support of the Twitter crazies.

I can only hope that those who "can't vote Labour" because of their stance on transgender issues will feel equally strongly that they "can't vote Tory" because of the morally repugnant policies that this government is implementing. Or are they prepared for the poor and vulnerable to be thrown under a bus as long as our leaders know what a woman is?

yes, I think they are.

Thing is, we already have the second biggest off-shore wind capacity IN THE WORLD! Only after China. In isolation Hornsea 2, is the biggest individual off-shore site. So, it is already happening, and I am therefore not sure that it is the big new idea that is being claimed.

Yes some has happened, but the labour proposal is to do four times as much and faster. Tories put a block on it.

I am sure it isn't.

I will read a bit more but still as people say so much more issues from the torys.

Oh my God I do really pray this is true! It is as good as the inside of my head

MushMonster · 25/09/2022 17:34

This sounds more than sensible to me, it is actually very much what I have been thinking myself all along. Yes, we need to invest and borrow lots of money for the energy crisis, but let's do so by creating a future proof economy.
And, as we do not seem to be striking so many wonderful deals after Brexit, we do need to go self reliant, fully independant. Make our own steel, energy, clothes, food, spoons, beds, you name it! It is both green and will keep jobs going and the economy going.
It makes full sense to me.
Also, lots of new enterprises, making things that other countries will pay for.
I do hope it happens!

On-shore has always been a problem because of planning, and yes, the Tories pledged to halt on-shore, because of local opposition. I don't think Labour will have any solutions to that either.

xalo · 25/09/2022 17:40

@coffeandteac I agree about the tories and I'm politically homeless at the moment.

Remind me where did Kwasi Kwarteng say the money was coming from to enrich the rich in his budget on Friday?

Viviennemary · 25/09/2022 18:36

TBH iI dont really care about what Labours plans are. They have to be better than ones the Tories have in store for us.

Quite, Tories seem to have found the biggest magic money tree ever planted all of a sudden Angry

The Tories have fucked business in many ways, not least by Brexiting. Johnson literally said 'fuck business'.

But Boris was such a good chap and I thought it was lovely how his messy hair upset so many people. I hope we can have him back as Prime Minister soon.

MushMonster · 26/09/2022 06:37

Do not say that @jgw1! It may become an omen....

HRTQueen · 26/09/2022 23:55

It was good to see Labour looking like the believed the could win an election

I liked what I was hearing so far

caffelattetogo · 30/09/2022 19:09

Yes, I'd vote Labour for this.

ChampagneCamping · 01/10/2022 18:13

I was Labour, then a floating voter due to identity politics but would vote Labour now as long as self ID wasn’t on the cards and the equality act 2010 remained as it is with women entitled to single sex spaces.

UWhatNow · 01/10/2022 20:46

coffeandteac · 25/09/2022 16:24

I have many a times it just doesn't feature up here in the 'red wall'. I have tried to understand it. I just don't ior have ever had a problem with it.

We have gender neutral toilets at school as well as male and female without incident so far.

Oh ffs here we go… sex is a protected characteristic because women are vulnerable mainly, not all, but mainly due to biological differences. You allow men into female only protected spaces then our rights to privacy, dignity and safety have gone.

So the woman who was raped on a UK hospital ward by another patient and not believed because ‘there were no men recorded as being on the ward’ - you think that’s ok? What about vulnerable female prisoners locked up with self-declared ‘women’ who’ve been convicted of sexual and violent crimes? Women forced to call their rapist ‘she’ in court? Traumatised women who can’t access rape support or refuges because they won’t differentiate between biological and self-declared women? Mothers and women being reduced to ‘menstruators’ ‘pregnant people’ and ‘chest feeders’? Girls having their sports achievements taken away by male competitors who claim they’re now female? And having to share changing facilities with them?

Good for you that you don’t give a shit about this absolute hateful travesty against women and girls. Some us care and think it’s important.

They could say that minimum wage would be put up to £30k a year with a personal tax free allowance of £15k and I still wouldn’t vote for Labour unless they ditch their plans for Self ID and they say that they will uphold and strengthen the Equality act in regards to Womens’ rights.
Gender ideology is just starting to be rolled back in schools etc. Labour and the unions are in the grip of this madness, they are dangerous.

This. Labour current policy is they support self-ID ie access to women’s safe spaces for any man who wants it. It is a deal reaker for many female voters. Not happy about their plan to tax private education either.

And yes I know the Tories are a shitshow. Doesn’t mean I’ll give Labour a mandate for self-ID though. They need to create a manifesto the whole country can get behind.
