Rishi Sunak pretending to own a Kia Rio

Tilltheend99 · 24/03/2022 20:36

Apparently, Rishi borrowed a Sainsbury’s workers ordinary car to be photographed with it. Then he tried to buy a can of Coke and couldn’t work out how to use his card. (He is in charge of our economy)

I just think the whole scenario is so bonkers everyone should here about it.

What an absolute div.

rbe78 · 25/03/2022 09:20

All right, definitely a div move with the car - but to be fair to him:

  1. The confusion over the payment was more confusion over being expected to scan his own items I think - this isn't particularly usual, so when the attendant held out the scanner, Rishi didn't get that he needed to scan the items himself, so wasn't sure what the scanner was for. I don't think it's that he's never used contactless payment before!

  2. Re. the bread - when it comes to absolute staples like bread and milk, I also don't really notice the exact price every time - and I'm sure lots of us can't name the exact price of everything we buy each week. I know this comes from a position of relative privilege (not Rishi level, that's for sure!), but I don't notice the price because I have to buy bread and milk no matter what. It's more 'luxury' items that I note the price and price change of - so if my favourite e.g. cheddar has gone up I'll buy a cheaper one instead. But milk is milk and bread is bread, not much wiggle room there.

Oh the car though - so cringeworthy!

'Div'

I adore everything Michael Spicer does but I just can't watch that one. I was so excited when it came out to see a new video, but I had to turn it off after about ten seconds. I've tried and tried since but it's so cringy it makes me want to curl up in a ball!
Ozanj · 25/03/2022 09:28

To be fair I’ve been using Apple Pay so often even I struggle with using my card. So I won’t judge him for that.

Booklover3 · 25/03/2022 09:28

Div Grin ffs

Goldfishjones · 25/03/2022 09:36

Whyyyyy wouldn't he just say "maths"?

spacehardware · 25/03/2022 09:41

Isn't a loaf of hovis about £1.20 now tho?

Agree with the poster who said don't really look at the price of bread/milk, got to buy them anyway. It's the marginal stuff I will look at and decide whether to compromise on

The car thing was so stupid I do not understand what he was trying to achieve. Even if it was his Kia, what was this pic supposed to show us?

beguilingeyes · 25/03/2022 09:43

He's obviously got staff to deal with the mundanities of life.

HomecomingKween · 25/03/2022 11:11

@GeneLovesJezebel

I’m not sure how he got the name ‘dishy’. His mouth is constantly open and his suit looks too small. He always looks to me like he needs his mum to sort him out before he leaves the house !
Baffles me too. He's just a tiddly bloke who gapes like a goldfish. But then some people fancy Matt Hancock...
PineForestsAndSunshine · 25/03/2022 11:25

His PR need to up their game.

I have teenagers and I’ve noticed this upcoming generation see straight through shit like this. He’s a highly privileged man. He can’t change that. He’d do better to own it and try and learn as much as he can about the lives of normal people in order to do his job as well as he is able to. And we’d do better to stop voting in people who, whilst they may be educated and technically able, will always struggle to do their job properly due to a lack of life experience.

beguilingeyes · 25/03/2022 13:22

Gone are the days when MPs would have a normal job before entering parliament. Nowadays it seems to go private school -university- HOC with no concept of a 'real' job.
I think this Eton-educated bunch of millionaires regard us as an inconvenience until they want our votes. Meanwhile feathering their own nests

Whatever happened to public service.

Graphista · 25/03/2022 17:17

Right back when it was the start of him being on telly during start of pandemic and people were going on "but Rishi seems like a lovely young man not like those nasty tories" I was saying don't be fooled!

Glad people are finally realising he is just as bad, callous and clueless as any other typical "I'm alright jack" Tory who has NO idea what it is to live on the edge of poverty EVER.

Never believe the marketing!

I am glad people are beginning to recognise that he is just another rich boy.

I see I wasn't the only one frustrated by people thinking he was "nice"

Check voting records, sm history, career history...

He is and always was an extremely privileged man who in reality cares nothing for the poorest and most vulnerable in society - just like EVERY other Tory

How does he pay for stuff?

Obviously he doesn't! I'm not just meaning he doesn't physically pay for things there are many things he never actually pays for in monetary terms either. Partly as an Mp partly as very wealthy person - they get a lot of freebies which is stupid considering they don't need them!

Interestingly from a brief look div appears quite similar in syllabus to modern studies here in Scotland - an area of study denied to the majority in England and Wales and which teaches among other things the history and organisation of our govt, debating skills, analysis skills, touches on philosophy, sociology and politics generally etc

In other words the elite are taught how to use and manipulate our political system while keeping the majority of the rest of the population in the dark regarding even basic elements!

@Polyanthus2 the money IS there - tories simply choose to spend it on Chris graylings and others fuck ups, useless ppe, numerous vanity projects and tax breaks for the wealthy! Be under no illusion if they WANTED to spend on the nhs, social care, policing etc they would! Be prepared for them to APPEAR to do this in the run up to the next GE!

And we’d do better to stop voting in people who, whilst they may be educated and technically able, will always struggle to do their job properly due to a lack of life experience.

Well said!

Though my problem with that is that they are few and far between as candidates! Ordinary people seem wise enough not to WANT the job!

Gone are the days when MPs would have a normal job before entering parliament. Nowadays it seems to go private school -university- HOC with no concept of a 'real' job.

Yes

Personally (and I apologise to those bored of my suggestion as I've declared it multiple times on here)

I would make it so everyone who wanted to be an Mp first of all :

Had 5 years experience at least in a normal job

Spent ideally 6 months but at least 3 months living in social housing on the lowest level of benefits

Then as mps

No 2nd homes they can flip for a profit! Instead have publicly owned apartments in a single building in London. En suite rooms for them personally, ground floor to have conference rooms and dining rooms etc for meetings and diplomatic relations etc

No expenses except for basic travel expenses for those who live outside a reasonable commuting distance from Westminster. Absolutely ridiculous that we pay for all their food, drinks, transport etc they bloody well earn enough to pay for their own!

Formalise and salary their office expenses so these aren't managed like personal expenses and also ban them from employing family members!

Ban them from having shares/interests in areas that create a conflict of interest (which is pretty much anything!) a particular problem is that so many mps (of all parties) are landlords/property developers - and they vote on housing issues based on that!! This is largely why we HAVE a housing and also cost of living crisis!

It used to be the Labour Party at least fielded candidates that were from ordinary backgrounds that's no longer the case. We are in desperate need of a genuine working class party again.

ginghamstarfish · 25/03/2022 17:41

Reminded me of the photo of Ed Miliband eating a bacon sandwich ... these idiots could at least practice before their photo op.

Roselilly36 · 25/03/2022 18:15

Most multi millionaires drive a Kia surely 🤣

Happygirl79 · 25/03/2022 18:50

He absolutely has no idea about how little the average person has to live on and obviously doesn't care. I get the distinct impression that he thinks he is above them. As for the poorest people. the elderly and the disabled he must think they are not worth anything.
The interview when he talked of all the different types of bread his household bought spoke volumes of how out of touch he is with the real world. I am disgusted with him. Is he so blind to the poverty he is pushing people in to by not doing his job or is it that he really doesn't care a jot?

Fifteentoes · 31/03/2022 10:46

@Polyanthus2

He defended his position well. Even the bit about his wife owning interests in a Russian company (which I presume she is off loading as we speak).

Why do you presume that?

beguilingeyes · 31/03/2022 12:58

She just got £12 million in dividends from them. Her father founded the company.

Fifteentoes · 31/03/2022 19:58

Apart from which the idea that politicians might give a toss about honour, public perception, perceived conflict of interest etc. is just SOOOO 20th century. We have a prime minister who is still refusing to give a straight answer to the question of whether covid rules were broken at gatherings where he was present, despite the fact that 20 people have been issued fines saying precisely that, let alone resign as the ministerial code requires him to do for lying to parliament.

That's the bar that Sunak has to live up to. Selling the idea to the public that you're staunchly behind sanctions against Russia while your wife makes millions from Russian business interests is small beans. Whisper the right thing in a few tabloid publishers' ears and hey presto: 2+2 = 5.

When he did eat out to help out he gained a modicum of popularity because hey, free stuff! But sadly I think you are right; he is not the cuddly, ‘compassionate conservative’ he wants to be perceived as. If anything he is Boris mark II; willing to trample anyone in pursuit of the top job. Many people will suffer.

Why is he so far removed from reality that he wouldn't scan his own items? Is this an acceptable level of disconnect between real life and our politicians? We are fortunate enough to not have to tighten our belts much but I notice the price of bread rising- in the last week the price of the own brand bread we get has risen 10p. Not a lot but noticeable, as someone in charge of the economy I'd hope they had some clue at how much these essentials these were rising as well as the high level stuff, but he's so out of touch it's painful.
Tilltheend99 · 06/04/2022 07:31

@Graphista couldn’t agree more. My MP is also a landlord which is presumably why they keep voting against landlords having to keep their properties in a liveable standard of repair.

@QuebecBagnet

I’ve googled.

Div is at the heart of the education we offer. It defines the liberal character of Winchester academic life. Pupils engage in discussion and debate, and embrace the idea of learning for its own sake, unrestrained by any examination syllabus. Div refers both to the subject, and to a form of about fifteen pupils from all different boarding houses, whose teacher is referred to as the Div don. Div dons are drawn from the whole range of different academic departments.

Div is multi-disciplinary in scope. In Years 9 to 11, it provides pupils with an introduction to a broad sweep of History, from classical times to the Early Modern period. It also encompasses English literature and language, the History of Science and Art, Religious Studies and PSHEE.

Who on earth advised him to say Div was his favourite subjectConfused He must realise that anyone who doesn't attend a £40k per year school would have no idea, and quite rightfully mark it down as elitist.

Having read all that definition, I'm still none the wiser as to what it actually is!

Tilltheend99 · 09/04/2022 00:08

I’m literally back to just say ‘Green Card!’
