What does Cressida Dick's resignation mean for Boris?

Nat6999 · 10/02/2022 19:21

Cressida Dick has resigned, does anyone think this is part of Boris's downfall?

OP posts:
AlternativePerspective · 10/02/2022 21:03

Dick should have gone a long time ago.

I want Boris gone, but this isn’t about Boris. The woman was an absolute liability and we’re well rid.

Boris is a separate discussion.

Jellykat · 10/02/2022 21:04

An awful lot of people with morals admitting theyve buggered up and resigning, pity BJ doesn't have any.

LizzieSiddal · 10/02/2022 21:04

Duntelchaig
If one holds Cressida Dick responsible for what the Met’s faults are as leader of the organiSation - even if she wasn’t personally involved in everything, does one also hold Sir Keir Starmer responsible for not going ahead with some potential prosecutions even if he wasn’t personally involved in those?

The answer to that is No.

fablett · 10/02/2022 21:13

@Duntelchaig false equivalence I think. There wasn't a culture of ignoring child abusers in the CPS, just a huge failure with this one abuser and that failure was replicated in every national body (BBC, NHS, Govt etc).

The met are incompetent AND have a misogynistic hateful culture. That's on the leadership.

VikingVolva · 10/02/2022 21:24

And under whose leadership did it all start tumbling out?

Does anyone really believe that there has been enough momentum established for it to survive her departure?

Duntelchaig · 10/02/2022 21:31

I’m still contemplating my opinion on her resignation but I do think the CPS has a poor track record on prosecuting sex crimes.
And I suspect Cressida Dick being a woman has done her no favours. Being a man is definitely an advantage when it comes to responsibility hitting your Teflon suit.

LunaTheCat · 10/02/2022 21:39

The Met is appalling but she is the sacrificial lamb. Expecting one woman to change generations of mysoginistic and racist culture is not possible.
There needs to be a resignation and there has been political pressure I am sure to deflect from the appalling acivity at No. 10 .

rainbowninja · 10/02/2022 22:09

@LunaTheCat well said 👏🏻

It doesn't sound like she should ever have been appointed but it now looks like she has been scapegoated which seems like an own goal. I have no more confidence in the government than I did before.

VikingVolva · 10/02/2022 22:25

Is it No10 pressure though? Her resignation letter says it comes after meetings with the Mayor which left her with no choice as he no longer had confidence in her.

Wouid a Labour Mayor really act to deflect from a Tory No 10?

Fifteentoes · 10/02/2022 22:26

@TracyMosby

I dont know how i feel about this. The met is seemingly full of toxic misogynistic men, so Cressida Dick resigns?
Yes, the one who had tolerated those toxic misogynistic men (not least, her mate Johnson) and failed to to anything about them resigns. Makes sense to me.
Fifteentoes · 10/02/2022 22:28

I can just see the Tory press. "Hardworking respectable white police chief forced out by PC-gone-mad MUSLIM mayor, just because of a little harmless banter. WHAT'S THIS COUNTRY COMING TO!!!"

TooBigForMyBoots · 10/02/2022 23:09

The Met is appalling but she is the sacrificial lamb.

I'm hoping she's the first of many. The Met is rotten to the core. It is an unsafe police service for over 50% of the people it's supposed to serve.

labyrinthlaziness · 10/02/2022 23:14

I think it is risky for him.

CD was a known quantity. Now there is an unknown quantity coming in. If the Tories are seen to be too political it will look like they are stitching it up to cover up a crime - far worse than just stitching it up for usual/general political reasons.

I think Starmer and Khan are capable of being tricksy about this and making it difficult.

PurplePansy05 · 10/02/2022 23:24

High time for her to go, way past the best before date. IMO she was biased in Conservative's favour, not impartial, in addition to being a useless leader. I think there will be an interesting situation now, depending on who the new chief is going to be. We will see what happens with the inquiry and with the Sue Gray's unredacted report. I am leaning towards this likely being an end of BoJo and Dick knowingly jumping out of a sinking ship. I think a lot will come to light soon, too.

GreenLunchBox · 10/02/2022 23:27

Sajid Javid's brother is deputy assistant commissioner so he'll probably get a promotion 🤔

LittleBearPad · 10/02/2022 23:27

She was useless. It’s good she’s gone

GreenLunchBox · 10/02/2022 23:27

And the Sue Gray report can then be filed in the bin

TheFoldOx · 11/02/2022 00:02

@GreenLunchBox

Sajid Javid's brother is deputy assistant commissioner so he'll probably get a promotion 🤔
Quite disrespectful to Bas Javid (yes, he has a name of his own), who's forged a highly successful career by his own talent and hard work, after six years in the Royal Navy.
blueshoes · 11/02/2022 00:16

She has had more than enough time to change the culture at the Met. Tone has to be set from the top. She failed to do it time and time again. She HAS to go.

Need a new broom to sweep clean.

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/02/2022 00:40

I think it is risky for him.

But it's not actually him so he doesn't care. Some nice words, a cushty job for one of his mates. Delaying tactics (Sue Gray's report). Distraction tactics (how can you trust her word when she...).

Dame Cressida Dick is gone. PM Johnson hasn't. He's grand.

LunaTheCat · 11/02/2022 05:30

Women are always expected to sort out men - this is no different. Women cannot be responsible for men’s bad behaviour.

PurplePansy05 · 11/02/2022 08:04

No. Leaders are responsible for culture in their organisations, regardless of whether they're men or women. If leaders fail, they have to go. She failed.

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2022 08:09

Seriously?

She should have gone a long time ago.

Just how many scandals? She clearly isn't addressing the problems at hand.

The trouble is you will just get someone else who is so institutionalised they will also fail to see the problem never mind address it.

Public confidence and trust in the police is at a real low. She had to go.

Nothing to do with Johnson.

RedToothBrush · 11/02/2022 08:14

@LunaTheCat

Women are always expected to sort out men - this is no different. Women cannot be responsible for men’s bad behaviour.
So as the head of the police it wasn't her job? Cos she's female.

Best not have another female head of the police then from your logic.

Fucking stupid.

If her job description - which will be the same if a man gets it next - doesn't include the remit to sort this shit out, what EXACTLY was her job? Maybe we should just abolish the position if no one has that responsibility.

Fucks sake. This is one where someone was employed to do a job, accepted the job, refused for years to acknowledge there was a problem, the had said problem blow up in their face, then bare faced tried to sit it out rather than actually clear house.

All the time with the public losing faith?

Nope. Just not up to the admittedly monumental job at hand.

SpikeySmooth · 11/02/2022 08:15

She couldn't come up with a decent plan for the Mayor that stamps out racism, misogyny, homophobia etc. Suddenly the Mayor created a backbone, but the Charing Cross report was the straw.

She was over-promoted. All she cared about was PR. She is not an ally of women. She defended her officers to the hilt, saying there's a few bad apples. Her officers repeatedly take against minority groups (Grindr Killer case being one.). She hasn't done anything to change the culture in all the time she's been in office, apart from appoint more females in loftier positions. It's all about looking good.

Meanwhile, young people near me are getting stabbed and shot on a regular basis and street crime in endemic.

She had to go.
