Keir Starmer - where is he?

This government and prime minister are the worst I have experienced in my long life. There is a a procession of misconduct, failure to follow due process, chumocracy jobs for mates, Covid bungling, new police powers, increasing misogyny and sexism and a more hostile environment for women - we seem to be drifting towards a totalitarian state...

How is Keir Starmer not making political capital from this? I honestly don't feel like we have a two party system any more, it feel like they are both the same.

'He looks & sounds the part and he is obviously a decent, honourable guy but he is politically clueless'

Well he looks the part, not sure if he sounds it, but completely agree that he has zero political instinct. He will get absolutely nowhere playing nice with this bunch of arrogant chancers. And he has been woeful so far at standing up for the women MPs in his party who are subject to horrendous online abuse. He's just not bloody good enough. I'm so disappointed by him

Chaotica · 30/06/2021 17:52

He seriously needs to get his act together. I'm another one who started out quite enthusiastic about the fact that he'd won the leadership and he began quite well... but he's become useless. (As PPs have said, it's hard to tell whether this is because he's not saying anything, or because it isn't reported. Labour needs to find a solution whatever the problem is.)

Added to this, when he does speak, he manages to piss loads of his would-be supporters off (such as with his Pride video just as Stonewall were becoming mired in scandal - he could have acknowledged Pride without making himself look clueless). Or sacking those around him. It's as if he and his policy makers can't decide what they want the Labour Party to be and have picked the worst of all policies and run with it.

Johnson's performance at PMQs today was the worst I've ever heard from a Prime Minister. Absolutely piss poor. Starmer should be running rings round him.

gillysSong · 30/06/2021 17:58

He's keeping his beak out of the current gov shit show, lack of morals and incompetance.
I don't blame him tbh, maybe his time will come, maybe it will be someone else.
He's clever enough to keep out of this anyway.

I don't think it's wise for him to keep out of it. Labour need to present an alternative (otherwise most voters will forget that they're there). Not saying anything makes them look unprincipled and like they don't care. (I don't think that is true, but that is what it looks like.)

The Tories have seemed disjointed and having multiple (well publicised) in-party disputes since before Brexit. Then brexit. Wasnt Sajid Javid ousted just before the pandemic...? ...because...(I cant even remember but Johnson had some sort of clear out, or reshuffle) There have been numerous occasions where I've been desperate for the Labour party to present themselves as the more credible choice and decent opposition, for years....and theyve never really taken the opportunities that have been handed on a plate!!

I have been impressed by Keir Starmer at PMQs but hes almost mute the rest of the time! I've voted labour and lib dems in the last 2 elections based on my local candidates, but not because I was convinced their leaders would make better PMs -but there surely has to be someone better than the current nightmare!

MarshaBradyo · 30/06/2021 18:12

Iirc Savid Javid walked because Cummings fired his staff

Starmer might improve but Labour are a shambles

I don’t know what they want and that’s pretty bad

Cons will get even stronger as we get out of this pandemic

Orf1abc · 30/06/2021 18:19

I voted for Starmer but wouldn't again.

There's a by election in Batley on Thursday. Normally you'd have hundreds of party members going there to campaign, but very few have gone. How can you promote a party with no policies?

FifteenToes · 30/06/2021 20:58

Apparently he's the respectable, cautious, "electable" leader that was needed to save Labour from Commie Jeremy and his band of Momentum Thugs.

Case of "careful what you wish for" I think.

Snog · 30/06/2021 23:27

Boris' performance at PMQs today was worse than your average 9 year old could have done. He is a piss poor and utterly inadequate leader, lacking in integrity, honesty and morality and the worst PM of my lifetime.

"Britain Trump" springs to mind.

Spot on. And yet some lunatic people hang on every word he says and will vote for him no matter what. I absolutely despair

Dervel · 02/07/2021 13:15

To be fair to him The Labour Party is currently going through an existential crisis over wether it wants to be a party of activists who will likely never actually get their hands on the levers of power for the foreseeable future, or if they are willing to compromise and move close to the center and actually have a chance.

He’s got to balance his own party between these two extremes, whilst being simultaneously coherent and consistent. Oppose the Government, and hold it to account.

Leading the Labour Party in its current condition is a challenge of true statesman level difficulty, and one unlikely to be rewarded with becoming PM. I think he deserves a tonne of respect for even taking it on.

MarshaBradyo · 02/07/2021 14:34

Dervel I agree I haven’t given up on him yet, although I find the rest of the party pretty hopeless

I think Labour just scraped by in a by-election? Any small victories will help
