Is there any point in voting Lib Dem?

I usually vote Tory but i feel very strongly in wanting to cancel brexit

I don't want to vote labour, and Lib Dem are the only party that will guarantee remaining

However, is there any point in voting for them? As the polls suggest they won't get in

I want to avoid labour at all costs, but also want to remain so not sure what to

They won't get a majority but you could still end up with a LibDem MP representing you, whose votes might make a difference depending on the makeup of Parliament. Also if nobody gets enough MPs for a majority, the LibDems would be able to set their terms for supporting the party that ends up in government.

CharlottesPleb · 05/12/2019 17:42

I think any vote against finishing the process the referendum started is quite likely a vote for lengthier political and economic instability. It does not help to prolong this very real period of economic uncertainty and losses caused by dire predictions, investor concerns etc., if we then have to do Brexit on top of that anyway. If MPs also fight against it because we give then the power to do so, maybe we will have to attempt it more than once and over the course of many more years than otherwise necessary.

I am really not convinced more years of this... nonsense will help our economy or save it from anything, it is like ignoring the fact you need you get a new job. The clock keeps on ticking down, the pound keeps on going down, and we haven't even started yet.

CharlottesPleb · 05/12/2019 17:46

I hit send too quickly but I meant to point out that it isn't going to help the atmosphere in the country much either, to elect people who sound kind of extremist about it. I'd far rather things were just got on with, calmly.

If you do want to vote to not implement the vote, though, Lib Dems are definitely the way to go: you don't have to be a mathematical genius to work out that Labour would pay very very heavily, numerically speaking, for remaining, whereas the lib dems have nothing to lose

randomsabreuse · 05/12/2019 17:55

Depends where you live - check the tactical voting sites and previous election results, especially for the election that caused the original con/LD coalition.

If LD took that seat then, quite possible their candidate will be elected. Also any seats that were heavily remain (And not Scotland/Wales) could go LD.

AiryFairyMum · 06/12/2019 00:59

Whereabouts are you? Would SNP, Green or PC be an option?

dreichXmas · 06/12/2019 01:23

It entirely depends where you are.
If you want to put the brakes on a hard Brexit then you need to look at the tactical voting for your area.
We are ex Tory voting remainers in our house.

BovaryX · 06/12/2019 08:00

The Lib Dems believe that anyone can self identify as a woman and gain access to previously sex segregated spaces such as women’s prisons, women’s refuges, women’s toilets etc. They have asserted that this does not in anyway compromise women’s safety. If you’re cool with a party who is promoting that? Vote Lib Dem. If you think it’s indicative of sloppy thinking and bandwagon jumping for Twitter points? Look elsewhere

LizzieSiddal · 06/12/2019 08:02

Agree with others, it depends where you live. Google Tactical Voting sites, you put in your postcode and it tells you who it’s best to vote for if you don’t want the Tory’s to win.

TheRightHonerable · 06/12/2019 08:02

In our area Lib Dem simply stand no chance. However DH is set on voting for them- I understand he needs to use his vote as he sees fit but we both know he’s wasting it!

GiveHerHellFromUs · 06/12/2019 08:10

Are you in a Leave or Remain constituency?

TheRightHonerable · 06/12/2019 08:15

We are a remain pocket (not by much though) of a strongly leave county! Surrounded by other strongly leave county’s 😂

Aethelthryth · 06/12/2019 08:17

Depends on the seat. I'm a Tory remainer but in this seat the only chance of unseating the labour MP is by voting Lib Dem. The Lib Dems cannot deliver reversal of Brexit but I think a Corbyn government would be a disaster

GiveHerHellFromUs · 06/12/2019 08:18

@TheRightHonerable is DH a remainer? I think this is the battle - remainers will split votes between Labour and Lib Dem and Leavers will split between Labour and Tory and nobody will get a decent majority

grabbp · 06/12/2019 08:20

Absolutely not after her latest comments about gender identification. I actually quite liked her until I knew that (I was never voting Lib Dem but if I were, that would have lost my vote).

Eyewhisker · 06/12/2019 08:23

Take a look at your constituency, but feel free to vote Lib Dem. Even with a stinking Tory majority, Brexit uncertainty will last for many years. Johnson needs to negotiate a trade deal with the EU, US etc and that is going to take years. He claims that he will not extend the transition beyond 2020 - if that’s correct, then it’s a hard Brexit end 2020.

But a hard Brexit is not an end point, the effects of the economy would be so disastrous - particularly for manufacturing and farming - that he’ll need to negotiate some sort of deal afterwards, but from an incredibly weak position.

Get Brexit done is just another Johnson lie.

TheRightHonerable · 06/12/2019 08:53

@GiveHerHellFromUs

Yes he is. We both would have preferred to remain but I’ve lost patience and don’t believe it is repairable now whilst DH is still holding out hope.

We are a funny split though as it would be Lib Dem or Tory In our house I’m afraid.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 06/12/2019 08:57

You need to vote tactically. Who is more likely to get the seat in your constituency, Labour or the Lib Dems or Green?

MrsMaiselsMuff · 06/12/2019 08:58

If you don't want a Labour government, then remember you can change that in a few years. You won't get another chance to stop Brexit.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 06/12/2019 09:01

@TheRightHonerable i voted Remain in the referendum but I'm exactly the same as you. We're both voting Tory next week.

For me, in our constituency there is no real alternative. Our Labour MP is so far left he may as well be in Canada and the independent looks about 14 and his only focus is education.

GreatGallopingSarah · 06/12/2019 09:02

Oh bloody hellfire. Lib Dems were my ONLY option and now with this gender self ID I have NO-ONE to vote for. This election is a nightmare.

BubblesBuddy · 06/12/2019 09:11

I think negotiations for trade deals will take years with no prospect of getting Brexit done. All this rhetoric is delusional. It will still be very rocky for business.

Many of us use unisex loos in coffee shops. I don’t know why the Lib Dem’s even went into this territory! No need.

They seem to be losing support because lies are being told about getting Brexit done in a year by a whole load of people who have manipulated the public for years - snd people are still falling for it. Remember, no manifesto is legally binding! Fact checking is finding lie and after lie. Misleading data after more misleading data. You are still falling for that! ??

They will do what they want, when they want and you will have a hard right government. The sensible Tories and Labour politicians have gone.

randomsabreuse · 06/12/2019 09:44

Gender self ID is in all relevant parties' manifestos, except Brexit Party...

Given they're all as bad as each other on this point surely we should choose on other policies.

There's also an element of "what rights and services" to be lost to women if the Tories get in with a big majority too...

Women's sports aren't governed on a national basis anyway- at a high level it will be international governing body rules, which then trickle down to national federations to use for domestic sport.

Hopefully we will manage to negate the current tendency towards gender stereotyping, which is what feeds the current trans stuff anyway- and it will go back to where it was - a few people quietly living their lives.

JoanieCash · 06/12/2019 09:51

If remain is what you want, look at tactical voting sites for your area. You might need to hold your nose and vote for a labour MP. The aim of voting labour wouldn’t be to get Corbyn in, but to create a minority/hung parliament that will force a second referendum. I dislike Corbyn intensely but will vote labour for this reason (but fortunate to have a decent pro-remain labour MP, despite his boss).

averylongtimeago · 06/12/2019 10:21

If you don't want Brexit- then you have to vote tactically.
There is no party full of all the policies you like, and none of the people you don't. You might as well look for unicorns.

The Tory party under Johnson is a totally different animal to the Tory party of even 5 years ago.
Not only are they desperate to have the hardest of hard Brexits, but they will open up the NHS to US companies - until it is no longer recognisable. Their disregard for the poor, elderly sick and disabled is appalling. Have a good look at Johnson and his cronies- are they really to be trusted?
The changes they plan to bring in will destroy the country for a generation.

So- vote tactically.

BovaryX · 06/12/2019 10:40

Gender self ID is in all relevant parties' manifestos, except Brexit Party..

It’s not in the Conservative Party manifesto and neither are they loudly proclaiming they are in favour of it whilst denying the conflict with women’s rights. The Lib Dems are promoting it without a single clue why it’s problematic
