Is there any point in voting Lib Dem?

I usually vote Tory but i feel very strongly in wanting to cancel brexit

I don't want to vote labour, and Lib Dem are the only party that will guarantee remaining

However, is there any point in voting for them? As the polls suggest they won't get in

I want to avoid labour at all costs, but also want to remain so not sure what to

No Swinson has just been on Women’s Hour promoting the Lib Dems commitment to this lobby group’s agenda

AlunWynsKnee · 06/12/2019 10:45

I thought the Lib Dems had changed their mind on just revoking (because polls don't give them any chance of being in a position to do that) and accepted that they may have enough influence to get a second referendum.

AlexaShutUp · 06/12/2019 11:07

Depends where you live. If you really don't want Brexit, your best bet is to vote tactically for whichever party is most likely to beat the Tories in your constituency. I appreciate that you don't want to vote Labour (and fwiw, neither do I), but ultimately, it's about deciding what is most important to you.

For me, for various reasons (including Brexit), keeping Boris out is the very top priority in this election, and as I'm in a Con/Lab marginal I will hold my nose and vote Labour. I can't say it's a positive choice, but it's the lesser of two evils.

LoopyLu2019 · 06/12/2019 11:50

If everyone just votes for the 2 main parties to "tactically stop the other main party" then we will end up with the stupid 2 party system. If everyone genuinely voted for who they actually wanted, we might make progress towards getting rid of the bloody stupid 1st past the post system. No party is perfect so vote for who you think can get us through the next 5 years the best out of the options. Not party is going to be perfect. For me, I don't like Boris or his cronies, I don't agree with 60% of what labour outline and also don't like corbyn. Lib dems have a good green policy, don't agree with the extremity of their self ID policy I think it needs a LOT more thought. I've never fully agreed on lib dems defence policy but that was more of an issue around 2010 than it is now. I think really I'd like to vote green because I want another referendum with all options spelt out clearly. I'm not sure I want the full revoke of the lib dems, but I don't have a green candidate so looks like it'll be lib dems, and I like our candidate which is good from a local view. I think, ideally I'd like a nice mix of lib dems and greens with a sprinkle of labour, just a dash of Tory, but Tory in the form of independent former Toriesthat sit to the left side of their party, rather than Boris. 0 extremists. Unfortunately politicians seem to be a bunch of overgrown children that can't get along so my ideal coalition would never get anything done. Come next election we'd be sick and tired of it all gain and start voting towards the more extreme ends of the political spectrum.

If everyone just votes for the 2 main parties to "tactically stop the other main party" then we will end up with the stupid 2 party system.

Nobody is suggesting that. Voting tactically doesn't mean only voting Labour or Conservative. It's about looking at which parties have the best chances in your constituency.

So if you want to keep the Tories out, you might need to vote Labour, or you might be better off voting Lib Dem, SNP or whatever. Unfortunately, in a first past the post system, that's just how it is.

OP, no one can tell you whether there is any point in you voting Lib Dem without knowing which constituency you live in. For example, in Richmond Park constituency in 2017, the Conservative pro-Brexit candidate beat the Lib Dem by just 45 votes, so if you happen to live in Richmond Park constituency there is every point in voting Lib Dem because the question of whether that constituency sends to Parliament a pro-Brexit MP who can be expected to vote in favour of all Boris Johnson's Brexit policies, or a Lib Dem who can be expected to vote against them, could come down to a tiny number of votes. By contrast, in Pudsey constituency in 2017, the pro-Brexit Conservative beat the Labour candidate by 331 votes. The Lib Dem vote was tiny and in that constituency it's clearly a two horse race between Labour and the Conservatives, so for anyone seriously trying to influence who Pudsey sends to Parliament as it's MP, a Lib Dem vote is a wasted vote. Voters in Pudsey who like neither Brexit nor voting Labour will simply have to make a choice which is more important to them. (Interestingly, the former chair of the local Conservative association there has announced he is tactically voting Labour in this election.)

Here is a link which will enable you to see who the tactical voting sites are saying is the best tactical anti-Tory vote for each constituency tactical.vote/compare

One thing I would say to you if you are concerned about a majority Labour government is that realistically that is simply not going to happen. Check the odds the bookies are offering! 25/1 against a Labour majority! That means they are really confident it's not going to happen, so there is no way Labour are going to get free rein to implement all the policies they would like. In contrast, a Conservative majority is very much on the cards. If that happens we will definitely get Brexit (possibly a no deal Brexit, as Johnson's "deal" only covers what happens up to the end of 2020). So if you are in a Labour/Conservative marginal constituency, you will need to decide whether you would rather (a) see a pro-hard Brexit Conservative MP voted in in your constituency, or (b) compromise on which party you vote for and vote Labour for once.

Littlemeadow123 · 06/12/2019 21:00

Im voting Lib Dems because I dont trust Boris and Corbyn to lead the country. They won't get a majority this time and the never will if people dont vote.

Peregrina · 08/12/2019 00:22

I must admit, I can't see why anyone who voted Remain would want the current Tory party to be returned to Government. The moderate Tories have been chased out of the party.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 08/12/2019 04:16

@Peregrina for me it's because the policies aside from Brexit. I personally feel that Labour have gone way too far left.

Corbyn also put me off even further with his interview a few weeks back about anti-Semitism in the party where every time he was offered the chance to apologise his stock answer "we won't stand for it as a government." No apology with regards to comments made from the many MPs involved. No information on how they'd enforce his statement.

Boris questioned a similar point with regards to Islamaphobia apologised and acknowledged his errors and said that anyone making racist comments in the Conversative party will be immediately removed from the party.

I know Boris is no saint but it says more about him as a man that it does Corbyn IMO. I don't believe you can accept that you have a racist party and expect us to believe you will then expel racism from society.

I also think that the country made its decision on Brexit and, just because it was the opposite of what I wanted, it doesn't mean that democracy should stop working in the way it does.

HappydaysArehere · 08/12/2019 09:51

I looked up the tactical recommendation for my area posted by Naomi Smith and it came out Labour. As this area is Conservative I was intending to vote LD as the most likely change for anyone wanting to reduce Johnson’s majority. I noticed that we have not had an LD election leaflet through our door and now thinking they are promoting Labour. I feel torn as I had no intention of voting Labour. I just hope this tactical voting works. Regarding the remarks made about the advisability of Johnson getting Brexit “done” well it will take longer and cost more than a vote for another people’s vote. I watched Hestletine’s speech on the BBC politics channel yesterday and it was a heartfelt plea for voting against the Conservatives. This from a giant in the Conservative Party. It was a wonderful, emotional speech.

Peregrina · 08/12/2019 10:02

OK GiveHerHell I made a statement and you answered.

Since Boris Johnson lies through his teeth, any 'apologies' about racism are worth nothing. Words were cheap - he had the opportunity to take action against racism in his party, but chose not to. See Baroness Warsi's comments - and she should know, being Muslim.

I suspect your real answer would be: "I always vote Tory".

Peregrina · 08/12/2019 10:03

Could I ask, also, are you happy with a PM who tried to subvert Parliamentary democracy by illegally proroguing Parliament? Or would you now prefer a democracy by plebiscite?

GiveHerHellFromUs · 08/12/2019 19:28

I don't think either Corbyn or Johnson could make a great, or even good PM.

If Corbyn had stood down 6 months ago I might be voting very differently.

It's my 3rd GE and I've lived in two different constituencies.
I didn't vote Conservative in the first election because the Conservative candidate wasn't the best candidate for me at the time. But my vote isn't based on racist comments - I've explained my reasons for the way I'll vote.

I don't condone the things Boris Johnson has done in his time as PM.

paolo2143 · 09/12/2019 18:38

Yes if by voting Lib Dem in a marginal seat you could oust the Tory MP.

How could anyone seriously think that Boris Johnson cares about the poor, sick, less fortunate and NHS after today's disgraceful actions

I honestly fear for the NHS and social care if he is re-elected as PM this Thursday.

Much depends on your constituency.
