AIBU to expect a bit more positivity about the referendum result?

OK here it it is, I voted Leave, truly believed in it, didn't think it would actually happen mind you I even placed a bet on ladbrokes thinking Remain would get it. I got up at 4am to watch the results and was so surprised at the way it was going but was full of national pride and ecstatic.

But what is really getting my goat is the plethora of experts coming on explaining away the results, about the poor and uneducated not listening to the experts who know better.

Sorry but I might be poor but I'm not uneducated, I made my decision by surprisingly not looking at the immigration issue to me thats the elephant in the room regardless of the result. I looked at the stats, the EU didn't save firstly our coal, steel or car industry, manufacturing is disappearing. Fishermen have no rights, farming is a mess there's a massive rich / poor divide. Peace in our time has not been achieved have we forgotten the genocide in Yugoslavia (that wasn't that long ago) and the impotency of Europe to have stopped it or whats happening in Ukraine?

Anyway its happened be excited for our future, its going to be a 2 year exit plan and you know a lot might not change, all those EU residents who live here and vice versa well you know if we want to live in Spain and you want to live here whats wrong with applying for citizenship like anyone else outside the EU? Yes our passports might change and we have to go through the 'Others' section so what. Obama said we're still going to be friends, the bank of England said its already put billions aside. Universities and business's who apply to the EU for money will just have to ask the government instead we will of saved it. So politicians the revolution has happened your MEP job and extra income won't exist get over it, we sussed you out with the expenses scandal. The little man has spoken, brush you self down get over it and be excited not pessimistic for our future we've survived the last recession and much worse.

By the way I'm in my 40's a stay at home mum with a child with SEN who lives in a small rural community and the only person who asked my opinion was the UKIP man who came twice in the lead up even out of his usual jurisdiction. So call it anti establishment whatever you will but be pleased British inner rebel won over in the end.

'The little man has spoken.'

Maybe he's a little man because he's such a fucking moron.

CremeEggThief · 25/06/2016 23:28

Julian, I did say it's a very big might, but it would be the only possible positive outcome. I amean furious about the result, personally.Angry

Monochromecat · 25/06/2016 23:28

YABU to expect more positivity, YANBU to expect more arrogance.

Stanleysmum01 · 25/06/2016 23:32

SeasonalVag its not personal, I don't begrudge money, I fell down a slippery slope after redundancy, but I do understand not being heard, this has been brewing for a long time and if the powers that be had tried to listen or at least pretended to maybe this wouldn't of happened. When the chips are down sometimes the only way to get anywhere is a poke in the eye and a kick in the nuts (metaphorically of course).

SuburbanRhonda · 25/06/2016 23:35

MSE has said the above regarding the likely impact of exiting. Nothing shocking at all

Devilishpyjamas · 25/06/2016 23:38

A 5 minute Google would have told you people with disabilities were safer in the EU. I have to get adult services to agree my son's care package - I was relying on EU law & will now be doing it in a climate of even more reductions in public spending. Nice one OP.

AnnaForbes · 25/06/2016 23:38

Op, I feel very positive. Our future is very bright but there will always be those who just want to denigrate. The Remainers were rancourous througout the campaign so I didn't expect them to take their defeat quietly.
Our future us better outside of the EU. Of that I'm sure. I'm excited to be part of it, it's history in the making.

Stanleysmum01 · 25/06/2016 23:43

SurburbanRhonda not drunk sleep deprived, my sons ill and has been for a while, why else do you think I'm on mumsnet?

OP posts:
Stanleysmum01 · 26/06/2016 00:11

I tried to read as much as I could but I still think I voted right for me and our future.
Anyway my son is finally asleep, I'm going too before I have to get up again.
Thanks mumsnet for keeping me entertained when I cant get out at the mo even if you do think I'm a twat.

OP, AnnaForbes, could you explain what is making you feel so optimistic? For instance, I assume you believe that there will be no problem with the economy. Could you explain why?

Devilishpyjamas · 26/06/2016 00:13

Well I hope you're right. I think it's rather more likely that those with disabilities are going to get shafted (again).

Greengager · 26/06/2016 00:17

You've listed a lot of negative things the EU has failed to prevent but not one positive reason for voting out other than being a 'British rebel' whatever that means. Can't see any benefit it what you've chisen at all. Pretty depressing

AnnaForbes · 26/06/2016 00:23

Judy, numerous threads leading up to the EU referendum contain posts made by me and by other brexiters clearly explaining many good reasons for voting Leave. Nothing has changed.

eyebrowse · 26/06/2016 00:30

OP: the universities, farmers etc can't just get the money from the UK governmen instead of the EU because

  1. The economy is going to shrink so the money not going to the EU will just be used to plug holes in the budget

  2. The government is a conservative government and they don't believe in giving money out. Instead they are likely to use any spare money to fund tax cuts for the rich. The only way that this can be stopped is if we make a huge fuss about this.

busyboysmum · 26/06/2016 00:32

For the poster who asked whether we would be able to have the free trade arrangement without the free movement the Swiss people had a referendum two years ago and they requested this from the EU who advise them that they could not cherry pick and if they wanted to be in the free trade arrangement then they had to have the free movement of people. Interesting article here www.euractiv.com/section/global-europe/news/swiss-did-not-weigh-consequences-of-referendum-eu-says/

lcoc2015 · 26/06/2016 00:32

"By the way I'm in my 40's a stay at home mum with a child with SEN who lives in a small rural community" - i think things are going to be very difficult for rural communities and people who need funding/benefits for dependents with SEN. Sadly I dont think there is any cause for positivity - only time will tell but i think those who have voted to exit have really hurt themselves medium to long term.

JudyCoolibar · 26/06/2016 01:21

AnnaForbes, threads before the vote extolling the wonders of leaving relied on three main categories of alleged benefits:

  1. Those who though it would sort out immigration problems. Most of these ignored the massive contribution of immigrants to the economy and the fact that we would be forced into allowing freedom of movement anyway; they also ignored the fact that a Leave vote wouldn't affect our asylum laws, our duties under the European Human Rights Convention, and the fact that non-EU immigration would be wholly unaffected.
  1. Those who thought it would be financially beneficial. In general these tended to be people who believed the £350 million nonsense in the teeth of hard evidence to the contrary, and who are now gobsmacked because the likes of Hannan are admitting that actually, it was nonsense.
  1. Those who think we are totally controlled by Europe and would be free of this. Apart from the batshit tendency who believe all the bollocks about straight bananas, these people ignore the benefits of EU regulation, for example with regard to safety standards. They also ignore the fact that if want to survive economically we will have to accept EU regulations anyway, with the difference that we won't have any say whatsoever in how they are formulated.

So can you tell us what has changed since the referendum? Apart from the fact that we have already slipped from fifth biggest economy to sixth.

You're both a little man and a stay-at-home mother? I'd have thought a transgender or intersex person like yourself would not have much time for bigots like UKIP (and vice versa), but hey, life is surprising and I shouldn't prejudge people.
