She is phenomenal - just 20 years old, SNP MP.

"I'm not the one who should be nervous, the people who are responsible for so much poverty and so much struggle in people's lives, they're the ones who should be nervous becase they're the ones who are going to held accountable for all the damage that they do to people"

Thet are going to shake our usual spinners up. They won't know what hit them. The SNP have some great women MPs - saw some of them on TV over the weekendm a real breath of fresh air - they are going to shake things up and not put up with the bowing and doffing of caps crap.

They don't conform to the traditional profile of our useless lot. This is a bit like the movie "Mr Smith Goes to Washington". I can't remember what happens in that movie though.

I'm am extremely glad she is not my constituency MP

Thankfully, the SNP are an irrelevance at Westminster and I say that as a scot. He fact that she and her cohorts don't seem to have twigged that even if they pall up with Labour and every other opposition party, the Torys still have a majority is frankly an embarrassment to the SNP and in MB's place, to the politics department of the University of Glasgow as well.

It will all end in tears.

ExitPursuedByABear · 12/05/2015 15:39

I fear for her.

Mbo33 · 12/05/2015 15:40

Not entirely sure when daughter of a school teacher and university student became "working class." Perhaps I am out of touch with the class system in the UK?

ssd · 12/05/2015 16:02

I really hope she does well. sure she's said some stupid things but who the hell hasnt?

Viviennemary · 12/05/2015 16:38

I must say when I heard a 20 year old student had the chance of becoming an MP my heart sank. But when I heard her speak it was a different story. She is excellent. It's anyone's guess but I think she'll do well.

SouthBySouthWest · 12/05/2015 17:16

She's my new MP, and I can say that I'm a little worried, but am willing to let her prove herself.

That being said, I'm just not sure how a 20 year old student can have enough life experience to be able to carry out the role required of her. Passion alone is just not enough.

Watch this space!

jellybeans · 12/05/2015 18:00

I think she is fabulous. So what if she tweeted something rude as a teen, that is how many talk these days. No big deal. Good for her.

ImperialBlether · 12/05/2015 18:09

She tweeted it during the election, jellybeans!

jellybeans · 12/05/2015 18:14

Ah right, well is that what she apologized for? She may have to 'scrub up' her language etc and social image then but I guess we all have to learn and she will probably pull her act together now she is an MP? 20 is very young but I had 2 children by then.

SwedishEdith · 12/05/2015 18:19

Going to be interesting to watch. She won't ever be able to accuse anyone of being out of touch with real people and going straight from university to politics though.

I didn't think she was patronising to Douglas Alexander. I thought she sounded respectful - maybe I misinterpreted that? I liked him though - he would have been a potential Labour leader (someone's going to tell me some dirt about now aren't they?)

TheScottishPlay · 12/05/2015 18:21

So glad that more SNP MPs will help the English learn more about Scotland.
FFS.

frankie80 · 12/05/2015 18:29

Whilst I don't support SNP, I do feel a bit sorry for her. I feel there will be a lot of things she will feel out of her depth on simply due to her age and lack of experience. She's about to finish university but being an MP isn't a graduate entry job, its not a traineeship.

frankie80 · 12/05/2015 18:32

Posted too soon - the tweets tell me she isn't mature enough for the job. Time will tell how she does and people will be watching her very carefully to see if she slips up.

Many of the new SNP MPs only joined the party a few months ago and again I just don't feel that's enough time to get prepared for a political job.

BlueBrightFuture · 12/05/2015 18:40

weeburrower1
I was not referring to her age. But as I said if the SNP voters feel she is the right person to represent them so be it.

I think the media will soon get bored with her. We shall see.

claig · 12/05/2015 18:44

'So glad that more SNP MPs will help the English learn more about Scotland.
FFS.'

No need to get shirty. I don't know much about the North or West of England either, but now that UKIP are the main opposition in the North, I will learn more about it and you will be able to learn more about Essex - the home of the UKIP insurgency.

I think the SNP will teach "the English" no more about Scotland than the 59 MPs Scotland has always had, many of them at the very centre of government.

The SNP are not some kind of extra special Scots with special Scottish superpowers. They are just people, same as the other people who represented Scotland before.

And many of them have a lot to learn about Scotland.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/05/2015 19:00

They are just people, same as the other people who represented Scotland before.

Not quite. The SNP unlike other parties is run from Scotland, unlike "Scottish" Labour etc
When it comes down to it parties have to please the highest concentration of voters - for the SNP that is the central belt of Scotland, for "Scottish" labour that is the SE of England.

claig · 12/05/2015 19:03

The reason that the SNP will make a huge difference to English people is because the SNP s far more likely to have an effect on what happens in England than the Scottish Labour MPs did. The SNP will make a real difference and the fear of them is what handed a victory to the Tories to a large extent.

Just as Thanet has made world news due to UKIP, places in Scotland will make world news due to the SNP.

I totally disagree, I think they will have zero effect in Westminster; people voted Tory because they support their policies, not because of any negative influence or fear of another party.

TheScottishPlay · 12/05/2015 20:54

'Learn more about Essex'. Cue raucous laugh in our house. Thanks Claig made our night.

dementedma · 12/05/2015 21:03

Many of these new and unheard of SNP MPs were voted in on the Nicola factor. Nicola Sturgeon is an experience and skilled politician, capable of holding her own against the big boys/girls. These raw new recruits are fresh meat at Westminster for the old hands, and will be chewed up and spat out again. They are in a for a big shock, in a fierce political arena where just waving a Saltire and crying "freedom" isn't going to cut it. Should be entertaining to watch though.

claig · 12/05/2015 21:08

"So with their two key pre-planned messages not working – and the polls remaining stubbornly drawn – Crosby and the Tory high command were forced to reassess. They noticed that the rise of the SNP in Scotland was resonating on the doorstep – particularly among potential Ukip/Tory waverers.

So they devised a new strategy, to relentlessly and negatively exploit the dangers of a Labour Government propped up by the SNP. Every day the party wheeled out its new “SNP will hold Labour to ransom” rhetoric on posters, social media and press releases. At times during the campaign it has seemed like the only Tory message."

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/generalelection/the-three-mistakes-that-could-cost-the-tories-the-election-10233258.html

"It was only when Cameron offered a show of passion - which many claimed he had been sorely lacking - in a speech ten days before the election did the tide start to turn.

Following this, the Tory emphasis on the threat of a SNP-Labour coalition helped claw back voters from the Lib Dems and Ukip - placing the Conservatives on course to claiming today's majority."

Farage said:

I knew the result yesterday [Thursday]. I could see the wards in Broadstairs were 80% turnouts and people queuing to vote. I spoke to people and they were saying 'look Nigel, we love you but we can't have Nicola Sturgeon running the country."

It was really a combination of three major factors - the economy, the SNP (which is again about the economy and socialism etc) and the fact that Miliband was not leadership material.

Roseformeplease · 12/05/2015 21:11

Hollow laugh at "impress the Central Belt of Scotland". In much of Scotland, Central Belt is as much of a dirty word as Westminster is to the SNP.

claig · 12/05/2015 21:20

' in a fierce political arena'

dementedma, our MPs and metropolitan elite are the people who think PMQs is too beastly for them and they want it tamed down and made committee-like where they all hold hands and sing kumbaya.

I think the SNP won't put up with that metropolitan malarkey and some of their firebrands will create fireworks. It will be entertaining
