What if Labour win then decide to replace Ed Miliband with ...

Well who?

Was just pondering on the aftermath of May 7th. Ed looks likely to win but no one, not even his own supporters, voters, party likes him.

So thinking of the UK constitution there is nothing to stop the Labour Party replacing him with another leader and providing us with an alternative prime minister.

The ones who ran last time had their chance so who does that leave?

Harriet Harman
Yvette Cooper
Chuka Umuna (sp?)
Jim Murphy??

I like him too!

Jackieharris · 08/05/2015 12:19

Now he's lost, who'll replace him?

He said in his resignation speech that Harriet Harman will be caretaker leader.

They usually appoint at the conference in the autumn, and the race starts now.

slug · 08/05/2015 12:35

Yvette Cooper has suddenly acquired a SAH husband. She's got the time now to devote to being a decent leader perhaps. Grin

ThisFenceIsComfy · 08/05/2015 12:46

I'd go with Yvette Cooper. She is an astonishingly clever woman.

ragged · 08/05/2015 12:56

Would it be naff of me to join labour just so I can vote for their next leader?

ThisFenceIsComfy · 08/05/2015 12:57

I just want to say that for once, I voted Labour with a happy heart. That I was voting with my principles for once. So for that Ed, thank you

Jackieharris · 08/05/2015 13:58

Yes that's a good point about yvette cooper.

Ragged - not at all. That's what I'm doing.

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 08/05/2015 14:28

Well said ThisFenceIsComfy

rootypig · 08/05/2015 19:41

Yvette Cooper, if they have any sense. Andy Burnham seems like a lovely guy, but he totally lacks gravitas. And this country is SO ready for a woman.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 08/05/2015 20:35

I voted for Andy Burnham last time.

I think Yvette Cooper would be a better choice now.

I was quite happy with Ed though tbh.

Kampeki · 08/05/2015 20:36

Yvette Cooper, if they have any sense. Andy Burnham seems like a lovely guy, but he totally lacks gravitas. And this country is SO ready for a woman.

I quite like Yvette Cooper, but there are other possible female contenders. Liz Kendall isn't bad.

rootypig · 08/05/2015 21:00

She's in the same category as Burnham for me, lacks gravitas. Maybe their voices are too high. I feel like a bit of an arsehole for writing that, but it's true.

rootypig · 08/05/2015 21:01

Actually I'm probably more of an arsehole for writing "but it's true" Grin

It's important, I think - critical even. This election has to teach labour that.

SwedishEdith · 08/05/2015 21:12

In 2010, it was thought that Labour would be out of power for a generation and whoever succeeded Brown would be a caretaker leader only Yes, I remember this an thinking that Ed Miliband would be sacrificed for this - and I wondered if David Miliband would be brought back to lead (and win?), but I'm not really sure about this any more.

Agree that Yvette Cooper and Andy Burnham lack gravitas. Quite like Sadiq Khan.

SwedishEdith · 08/05/2015 21:14

Nick Robinson was very kind about Ed Balls this morning on tv. Saying that he was one of the cleverest economists he's ever known or something.

rootypig · 08/05/2015 21:42

I have little opinion on Ed Balls one way or another - he seems like a nice bloke - but Nick Robinson's endorsement is surely another shovelful of dirt on his grave Hmm

Actually Balls going is a bit of a godsend, for the party, and his marriage.

I meant that Liz Kendall lacks gravitas. I find Yvette Cooper pretty impressive.

SwedishEdith · 08/05/2015 21:49

Well, I don't think anyone is going to worry too much about Nick Robinson's opinion, really. But, agree that him (EB) going is good for Labour (every cloud...).

Wish I found Yvette Cooper convincing, but I don't.

funnyossity · 08/05/2015 21:53

I don't understand the appeal of Yvette Cooper.

Labour are short on convincing politicians imo.

rootypig · 08/05/2015 21:54

I merely meant to point out that Nick Robinson is a raging Tory Grin

kerstina · 08/05/2015 23:29

I don't find Evette Cooper convincing either no charisma and thought she was awful on Sunday on the marr show came across as really aggressive too . Really sad to see Ed go.

Jackieharris · 09/05/2015 00:08

Hadn't heard of Liz Kendall before but I quite like her wiki page en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liz_Kendall

funnyossity · 09/05/2015 14:46

Jackie do you not think Labour are finished in Scotland now?

Jackieharris · 09/05/2015 17:24

No. Look what happened to the Tories. They had no wm seats at all but have consistently sent quite a few to holyrood.

The labour vote was still 24%. In the part pr holyrood system they will still get a fair few seats.
