Politics

I know it's early, but I live in a safe seat and it is so depressing.

I care about politics, I always vote, but I know it won't make a spot of difference which way I vote. Sad

OP posts:
CultureSucksDownWords · 28/03/2015 22:19

That's exactly my feeling on it too. I just wish my vote had some wider impact though.

ShadowStone · 28/03/2015 22:21

Safe seat here too.

I'm still going to vote, but it does feel like it doesn't matter who I vote for.

meglet · 28/03/2015 22:21

our tory mp was hauled over the coals for fiddling expenses but I bet she still gets in. she's been doing loads of touchy-feely news stories lately Hmm .

I always vote though. There's always hope.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 28/03/2015 22:24

I did see recently that Esther McVey (sp?) is in line to lose her seat in Wirral

So it's not all bad news Grin

rednsparkley · 28/03/2015 22:27

Bishop in my constituency the donkey would be a shoo-in if it wore a RED rosette.

I live in what was a massive mining town and even if the labour candidate was even more openly corrupt and self serving the town still could not bring itself to elect any other colour - it's depressing (and I say that as a life-long Labour voter) The party has no need to do anything for the benefit of the town and its people as it knows it will get re-elected regardless Angry Sad

BishopBrennansArse · 28/03/2015 22:32

At least ours is buggering off.
His replacement seems very un-Tory I must say.

meglet · 28/03/2015 22:34

theone that'll be worth staying up for.

Grantaire · 28/03/2015 22:35

The first time I voted at 18, it was in a safe seat. Had been Tory for many, many years but I worked hard with one of the other parties, campaigning and canvassing. We achieved a victory with only 483 votes difference. I was so proud and invigorated by my first foray into political voting. He went on to win again and his majority was over 10,000 and then again with an even bigger majority.

Now I live in a v v v safe Tory seat and there is no alternative yet. The other candidates seem apathetic in the face of the Tory incumbent. It CAN be done. I've seen it and it was brilliant to be part of it. It won't be done now though. It's like nobody can be bothered.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 28/03/2015 22:40

Hoping so, meglet Smile

austenozzy · 28/03/2015 22:43

I used to live in a constituency with a 10k majority for the Tory incumbent. Now we live in the Redruth and Camborne constituency where the Tory mp has a majority of just 66 votes! The last mp (lib dem) was caught with her fingers in the expenses till, which rankles a lot of people I've spoken to. UKIP are looking strong too. Will be v interesting.

WetAugust · 30/03/2015 18:38

I live in a marginal constituency so my vote will count.

Since living here it's been Tory, then Lab x 3, and now Tory.

The opinion polls show it's now a Tory / Ukip marginal.

All my elderly true blue Tory neighbours tell me they will NOT be voting for David Cameron this time.

Shock
TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 30/03/2015 22:42

Oh that's good news, WetAugust - I do hope elderly true blues elsewhere feel the same Grin

Also hoping that IDS's refusal to say where their £10bn of welfare savings will come from will mean every possible potential target will vote against them

SorryToDisturbYou · 30/03/2015 23:10

I'm out canvassing in a marginal, would it make you safe-seaters feel a bit more loved if I came around and knocked on your door while you were having dinner? Grin

Perhaps I'll start a virtual canvassing thread, and you can all explain to me in depth why you're not voting for my party, while your dog sniffs my crotch and rainwater drips down my neck. It's all glamour...

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 30/03/2015 23:20

I would feel very sorry for anyone canvassing round here tonight, Sorry - the weather is foul - hope you're not actually at it!

SorryToDisturbYou · 30/03/2015 23:23

Not at 11pm, that really would get some interesting responses! Earlier in the evening. Parliament is dissolved, the campaign has started! and all that. (And yes, I did look a teensy bit like a drowned rat)

BloodyAwfulPoet · 30/03/2015 23:30

I live in David Cameron's constituency Hmm

the lives that were lost to afford us this sorry choice... it's enough to drive me to hard liquor.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 30/03/2015 23:43

Oh, oops, I didn't realise how late it was! Did you manage to convert anybody tonight?

Sympathy, poet Flowers it must be quite tempting to move away

I just had a look at that list and find I don't live in a safe seat so my vote will count.

SorryToDisturbYou · 31/03/2015 08:42

Generally, we're not really trying to convert people; if you tell us how everyone in the house over 18 is voting we'll tick our boxes and move on!

I mean, if there's 100 houses on your road and we have a 10 minute conversation with each person who comes to the door, that's 16 hrs just to do one street...

But obviously some people actually want to talk to you, whether they're genuinely undecided or are just excited to have a real person to tell the things they normally shout at the telly.

Although I was heartened by the number of people who said ' Well, I certainly won't be voting UKIP anyway!'
There may be hope for the world yet.

duzzlightyearsmum · 31/03/2015 08:48

BloodyAwful I'm in the same constituency as you.

Really isn't much point in my vote in any direction but I will exercise my right nonetheless

HeyheyheyGoodbye · 31/03/2015 08:49

Same, OP. Annoyingly we are moving to a swing seat just before the election but too late to register there! Buggering hell.

Seeker33 · 01/04/2015 12:14

Hugo, yes safe seats are a bore. Mine is marginal Not much action yet. I suppose it will start on Saturday.

Candidates seem to have stopped holding open public meetings.

TheFallenMadonna · 01/04/2015 12:21

Do you think a proportional representation system would be better? AV proved not to be popular...

PTAblues · 01/04/2015 12:29

I live in what has been a safe Labour seat for eons. Not any more - I suspect the SNP will take it. Our current MP is rubbish so I won't be sorry to see him go.
