Can someone please explain why UK is trying to keep Scotland?

I am a bit confused. Scotland has been told from the start of the Referendum campaign that it cannot stand on its own two feet and will be worse off without the UK but surely then the rest of the UK will be BETTER OFF without Scotland?
I lived in London for 4 years and the general consensus was that Scotland was heavily subsidized by the rest of the UK. Again why? This does not seem fair to other parts of the UK. I keep hearing now from some people in England that Scotland should not get further preferential treatment. Why does Scotland get preferential treatment?
Again, if Scotland went independent, the "so called" money that has been used to subsidise them would then be redirected back to the rest of the UK. Why do they (Westminster) want to carry a dead horse?! Why oh why is Westminster so determined to keep Scotland that it has used its might through the media and corporations to not let Scotland go. It makes no sense to me. I work in business and the basic principle of business is to keep your assets and get rid of your liabilities!!! The pound should soar when Scotland is gone from the UK as a huge amount of debt would be gone? Why are the politicians sending every MP possible to woo them back? It is clear that Scotland must have something that Westminster wants. What do you think?

Actually, all the Uk's money ends up in London, but in fact London is the biggest subsidised part of the United Kingdom. Its a colossal expense, mainly for Scotland. Over the last 45 years Scotland has produced more oil than Norway and More oil than Kuwait, and yet as a part fo the Uk Scotland is as broke as Wales. Scotland is the oil and gas capital of Western Europe and is now currently leading the was in renewable energy, which Scotland is also completely self sufficient for. Basically under the guise of the Uk England stole all of Scotlands money and used it to rebuild London, and much of England infrastructure. Meanwhile the Scottish dont even have a decent road between Glasgow and Inverness-shire. Scotland also has most of the Uk's drinking water, something England is running out of.

Sebastianthecoo · 15/11/2021 00:17

Who are you talking to Rob?

giggly · 15/11/2021 18:05

See this is exactly what boils a lot of Scottish peoples piss. I do not hate England as you have stated I simply want the opportunity to be part of a country independent of English rule. I do not believe the union in any way benefits me or Scotland but that does not make me hate England.
Why is that so hard for many English people to understand?

giggly · 15/11/2021 18:10

That was as response to @niceguy2

Gohugatree · 15/11/2021 18:14

'Scotland has produced more oil than Kuwait' Hmm hahahahaha

I know the pp is just trying to provoke a response but statistics like this are a bloomin' good reason why I'll not be voting for an independent Scotland anytime soon.

IncyWinceySpiderWillies · 15/11/2021 18:18

UK government will swing far right and probably leave EU

Probably?!

RobG · 15/11/2021 18:38

🤣🤣🤣 lol! Laugh all you like! My source for the information is Hayley Millar at the BBC, -she is their Political Correspondent for Scotland. You could always watch her documentary 'Truth, Lies, Oil and Scotland' it was broadcast on the BBC and is available on youtube to watch for free! But I think the real reason you wont be voting for an Independent Scotland any time soon is because you arent eligible to vote in the referendum eh? lol! 🤣🤣🤣 Hilarious! 😜

RobG · 15/11/2021 18:39

Hi Giggly, -the people you speak to about this dont want to understand; -they're in denial.

shiningstar2 · 15/11/2021 19:10

As many have said, if Scotland goes it will impact on the rest of the Union, not just Scotland, so why can't we all vote on it? I think better together. Scotland seems to be given some advantages England doesn't get. Free University education. Free universal care for the old, no need to sell your our house, if you have one, for care. Free prescriptions across the board. Better than we are getting in England. Hang on in there with us with us Scotland. We are better together

RobG · 15/11/2021 19:44

@Isitmebut Your views and opinions are not only inaccurate but hopelessly out of date.

RobG · 15/11/2021 19:47

@shiningstar2 well... its like this; when your partner decides that you have been abusive to him/her and that he/she is leaving, -you dont get to vote on it. It's THEIR decision. Thats what a Partnership is. Besides, why would you want a vote? England is supposed to be this 'world beater' and they've been saying for over forty years that Scotland cant manage without England. Really it's England that cant afford to be Independent because it is dependent on Scotland and its money and resources. As far as I've been able to read.

RobG · 15/11/2021 19:50

@shiningstar2 If you read up on it, all of these 'advantages' Scotland appears to have over England are paid for by the Scottish Government. I would respectfully suggest a better question might be 'Why dont people in England have free prescriptions'? Perhaps you could speak to Boris about it? I mean, why shouldnt people in England have free prescriptions? The British Government in London doesnt seem to think you should have those things.

RobG · 15/11/2021 19:53

@shiningstar2 "Hang on in there with us with us Scotland. We are better together" -that bit did make me laugh just a little bit. It looks like your country has taken most of the money from the Scottish for over four decades (longer in fact) Why on earth would you expect the Scottish to remain in the Uk, particularly when 67% of the Scottish Electorate voted to remain in the EU and England's Government ignored them and pulled them out of the Eu against their will
anyway?

RobG · 15/11/2021 19:55

2014..what a year..childfree, fresh out of uni, full of optimism...

And btw im case you haven't already noticed...

THIS THREAD IS 7 YEARS OLD!

May it rest in peace.

RobG · 15/11/2021 20:31

@Redorwhitejusthaveboth North Sea Oil yes, but also the billions in renewable energy, a whisky industry worth upwards of a Billion every year in exports, not to mention all the other taxes the Scottish pay into British treasury in England.

RobG · 15/11/2021 20:37

@PoppadomPreach Yes, exactly. Scotland does subsidise England Wales and N. Ireland, though mainly England . Trident was never wanted by the Scottish and they have wanted to be rid of it for decades now. I would be prepared to wager that Trident will never be put in England though, the British administrations think the safety risk is too great, -which is a surprise that the think it is acceptable to place it in Scotland. And of course no we can look back and see that the British lied to the Scottish people the same way that they conned the English into voting for Brexit people by telling them lies.

RobG · 15/11/2021 20:39

@OnPaper - heheh rest in peace? lol! I think it's going to be lit up like a Tree at Christmas! The Uk is collapsing and breaking up. Watch what happens between now and 2023 😜

Libelula21 · 15/11/2021 20:44

Scotland has the same population as Greater Manchester area, give or take. Now imagine that the Greater Manchester area has billion pound industries in whisky, salmon, renewable energies and fossil fuels, gaming & tech, and tourism.

The idea that Scotland can’t support itself is for the birds, surely?

Scotland has not voted Tory since the 1950s (though in fact generally around 1 in 5 people still vote Tory, approximately, and often that’s not a million miles off the mark for England too).

Arguably brand UK is now past detoxifying anyway?

depremesnil · 15/11/2021 20:45

So if Scotland votes to leave the UK, but the rest of the UK votes against it, we should be forced to stay? Do you also think all of the other EU countries should've been able to vote to stop Brexit?
Knownbyanothername · 15/11/2021 20:45

We’re leaving Scotland if the next one is a yes vote. Thankfully one of us was born in England.

Knownbyanothername · 15/11/2021 20:49

The free university thing is an actual nonsense btw.
Scotland government pays about 1800 per student per year. The universities can’t make ands meet on this paltry amount, leading to an influx of overseas students to subsidise it and a limit on the number of Scottish places.

giggly · 15/11/2021 21:26

@shiningstar2 see this is pure ignorance on your part. Shows how little you know about how Scotland is run and how the SG allocates it’s budget.
