What are Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Rabbits are cheaper, Julia. Honest.

KnottyLocks · 23/01/2012 14:03

Oh I'm getting punchy Grin

I'm disappearing for a few hours to calm down Grin

TeWihara · 23/01/2012 14:05

Me too.

If people don't know, they don't know, that's fine.

Deliberate ignorance fucks me off. Don't ASK a question and then ignore the explanation but it doesn't suit the way you want to see things.

Hullygully · 23/01/2012 14:09

I can't go there.

They don't want to know facts. they want to enjoy their frothing.

ValarMorghulis · 23/01/2012 14:10

I am finding myself increasingly saddened by not only the ignorance of many mumsnetters, but also their refusal to be educated.

Hullygully · 23/01/2012 14:13

It's when you start hearing "I just think.." that you know they don't want to know the truth for sure

RatherBeOnThePiste · 23/01/2012 14:14

I really wish I hadn't looked at that thread now. Bloody hell. You are right, they have no inclination to find out facts. Too much fun to have bashing. Sad

TeWihara · 23/01/2012 14:15

On the thread in Chat Sunshine had a fairly decent suggestion - a Cap to appease the DM frothers, but a discretionary panel that can waive it on appeal.

Give the panel the instruction that the cap cannot force anyone into the defined measure poverty, everything would be fine...

Hullygully · 23/01/2012 14:16

Isn't it odd?

That's why the right wing are both mystifying and indomitable.

PattiMayor · 23/01/2012 14:19

I think it's very hard for people to admit that they've voted in a group of people that are only interested in feathering their own nests.

And by the time they wake up and smell the coffee, it'll be too late

Hullygully · 23/01/2012 14:26

I think they literally can't/won't see it.

They like it. They like the idea of punishing people and saying IT'S THEIR OWN FAULT

Hullygully · 23/01/2012 14:34

I have started a thread about the need to shoot them all.

MmeLindor. · 23/01/2012 14:40

IDS claimed £18k in expenses the year before he went into government.

Nice.

Some people have to survive on that, you smug wankerface.

Yes, I agree. The sheer inability to click on ONE single link and read the article linked to, or to read one of the stories posted and THINK about it for more than just a nanosecond.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 23/01/2012 14:48

Inability maybe, but no actual desire to learn. How sad is that? No desire to become better informed.

TeWihara · 23/01/2012 14:50

I think some people have party issues, as in anything the Cons, or Lib Dems, or Labour thought of must be good because they are my people and they don't believe in delberately hurting people.

TeWihara · 23/01/2012 14:51

When mostly we are finding they've all cocked up at one point or another...

CardyMow · 23/01/2012 14:53

But TeWi - IDS has CHANGED what the defined measure of poverty is. So these changes won't push anyone else into poverty. In fact, this Government has LIFTED thousands of people OUT of poverty. Just by changing the DEFINITION of what constitutes poverty. Aren't they brilliant?

So all the Tories will see is that the Government has ALREADY lifted xxxx amount of children OUT of poverty. But they won't listen to reason that SHOWS that no-one's income has actually CHANGED, just the definition of poverty...

JuliaScurr · 23/01/2012 14:55

Interesting stuff on Benefit Claimants Fight Back fb page re changing wording

TeWihara · 23/01/2012 15:02

Yes - it would have to be a REAL definition of poverty, not made up shite.

KnottyLocks · 23/01/2012 15:03

Hunty, that's the logic that's cured many disabled too.

madhairday · 23/01/2012 15:07

Hunty, that's a really interesting breakdown of figures, and devastating for you :( It's so scary.

I don't dare go looking for that other thread. Could do without blood pressure going up the roof today Grin

Thanks for all links etc re ATOS - rang them and have the appointment in Feb. They said I could have dh in the room with me so that's good as he is very good at telling how it really is. If they will let him speak that is.

Haberdashery · 23/01/2012 16:04

Hello. I just found my way here via a link to your blog on that awful awful benefit cap thread. Hunty, I am disgusted at what you are facing. I'm disgusted with the measures being brought in. I'm ashamed to be British, quite frankly. How can anyone think this is a civilised and compassionate way to behave?

I'm not as eloquent as all of you but I am going to write to my MP when my daughter's in bed. I'm so so sorry for everyone who is facing this kind of assault on their basic standard of living. I know being sorry is not enough. I will write to anyone else that you think is a good idea, too. I saw there was a section about that on the blog and will also look at that properly later. This all makes me feel like crying, quite honestly. I am just so appalled. Anyway. I like the blog. It makes fascinating reading. Keep up the good work!

KnottyLocks · 23/01/2012 16:09

Welcome to the Frothers, Haber Smile

HarrietJones · 23/01/2012 16:11

Is child benefit going to be part of UC?

We don't claim TCs as I've been bitten before by them & whilst we can get by I'm not going to bother. But if we list CB that could be the difference in getting by & not.

OpinionatedMum · 23/01/2012 16:16

Haberdashery If you are on twitter or facebook you could follow the frothers and share the blog posts which aim to explain the truth behind the propaganda. The links are in the OP. Writing to MP's is great. There are also petitions on the blog.
