WTF are Frothers? Have you seen them around and wondered? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Tory, Labour, Lib Dems - Common Goal - Protest Against the Cuts

What are the Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

Happy New Year frothers!

Happy New Year!

And with the New Year comes the start of the London Mayor campaign. Had literature stuff arrive through the door today - wwwBackBoris2012.com What Boris has certainly achieved as Mayor is to distance himself from Cameron/Conservative/coalition policies. The main strategy of the opposition at the moment is just to emphasise that Boris is a true blue Tory. Well I think we know that! I would hope for a more positive and definite campaign. The other contender is Brian Paddick, so the same three main people again. Cameron has already said it is a priority of his that Boris stays as Mayor.

It will be interesting to see how the campaign progresses, the election is on May 3rd, so there is a while yet

JuliaScurr · 01/01/2012 12:55

There will definitely be anti-cuts candidates in London, keep your eyes open for news

Meanwhile, have you see pcs.co.uk.thereisanalternative

Scarletbanner · 01/01/2012 13:00

Oh RatherBe I'm not at all enthused by Ken but I can't bear Boris and his money-wasting vanity projects. Paddick's vote will be negligible but what to do? If there's an anti-cuts candidate will splitting the anti-Tory vote just help Boris get back in?? A dilemma!

JuliaScurr · 01/01/2012 13:01

JuliaScurr · 01/01/2012 13:05

Yes Scarlet but all three main parties have the same policies. Greens look OK but tend to collapse when elected (eg Brighton) The Labour party used to be accused of wrecking the Liberals' chances in early C20th

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/01/2012 13:09

Scarletbanner - I think Ken was the wrong choice as candidate, I think they would have had a better chance with someone else tbh.Don't know who though. Paddick won't get in, and it will come down to the two of them. An anti cuts candidate runs the risk of splitting the opposition vote, but will be interesting to see.

And yes vanity projects like the routemaster

Peachy · 01/01/2012 13:22

What on earth is going on with Labour then? Their speech about no benefits without contributions- nothing to say the disabled or people caring since childhood will be exempt, and pretty irresponsible when there are 40 applicants for every job- people will starve.

Am a member and expected to be a lifelong one; best hope I have now is that we send Ed packing and elect someone who can do the bloody job- I certainly wasted my vote on him!

Peachy · 01/01/2012 13:23

'And he will say that people should get state handouts only if they have paid their taxes first.

MmeLindor. · 01/01/2012 13:28

For fucking fucks sake, what on EARTH is Ed thinking?

Seriously angry at this.

TeWihara · 01/01/2012 13:29

so what happens to, for eg, care leavers with no one to support them finacially if they can't get a job? Confused

On the housing topic, new proposals today from the coalition that they want to make sub-letting councill houses illegal and raise rents to market rate for tenants earning more than 100k a year. Sounds fair enough, but likely only to affect 6k people (though what cheeky sods - why would you stay in a ch on that much money?!) hardly going to actually solve anything in terms of waiting lists.

Peachy · 01/01/2012 13:35

Most of the people affected IIRC by the £100k thing will be in London; I suspect a significant proportion of those will be in the saving for a deposit stage as well- but for those not of course they should be evicted: and IIRC Labour had plans to tackle that and the sub letting too.

It's all just to convince voters that really people in CHs don;t need them; you get loads of comments about posh cars on estates and all that but reality is most houses on the estates are not LA owned any more, private. Certainly here and where I grew up.

Peachy · 01/01/2012 13:35

TeWi I know wrt care leavers- appalling.

edam · 01/01/2012 13:35

Oh, it's a load of 'we must get some friendly headlines in the Daily Mail' nonsense. Everyone pays tax - even if too poor to pay income tax, everyone is taxed every time they spend money - VAT and duties, for instance.

TeWihara · 01/01/2012 13:38

Yes, DH and I looking to buy an ex-CH whenever we buy. I doubt there are any actual CH left in our town!

I was thinking as well with the high earners in CH, it's not like most CH are in really desirable areas so there is probably a reason why they are choosing to stay put, maybe some are adapted houses or older people who are scared to move? Either way charging market rate is fair because they can afford it. But since 6k in 8million is an almost negligible percentage... 'tis all PR isn't it?

MmeLindor. · 01/01/2012 13:40

Am furiously tweeting my Welfare State post to the Milibands, not that I expect the feckers to read it, but perhaps their followers will.

I cannot understand why, when there is so much to criticize the coalition on, that Labour even for one moment considers bashing benefit scroungers.
