WTF are Frothers? Have you seen them around and wondered? Not a quiche, but a protest group. Tory, Labour, Lib Dems - Common Goal - Protest Against the Cuts

What are the Frothers?

The term "Frothers" came about one dank and dismal November day in 2011. A frustrated user of the parenting forum Mumsnet started a thread about her dismay at the cuts that the Conservative/Liberal Democrat government was inflicting on the British public.

She stated that she was not "quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff".

The good stuff - policies, benefits, institutions that had taken years to achieve were being cut for no good reason, often leaving gaping holes in the fabric of British society.

The NHS, with which we Brits have a love-hate relationship, but like a favourite sibling, we wish to protect from harm.

Sure Start, a successful scheme that supported parents who were struggling and offered children from deprived backgrounds a better start in life.

Universal Child Benefit was cut for those families who had one earner bringing in more than £44k a year. If both parents each earn less than £44k, they keep their UCB payments. This obviously hit single parents and families with a single earner hardest.

Disability Living Allowance and Employment and Support Allowance - which enabled those with disabilities to live a decent life, without feeling that they were begging for assistance or were a burden to the taxpayer.

Student Fees, the introduction of which, contrary to Lib Dem pre-election promises, means that a whole generation of young people will have to think carefully before applying to higher education.

These and many other cuts are being made in the name of austerity. We are "all in this together", but some of us are deeper in this than others.

We all understand that there are sacrifices to be made but why should these sacrifices be borne by those who already have so little?

The general public seems oblivious of the dangers being faced, they are unaware of the injustices being wrought on the already disadvantaged.

The government is winning the war of the headlines. They have blasted the recipients of DLA and ESA as scrounger and cheats so often that the general public believe it. They misinterpret data to "prove" their points. Teachers are painted as being irresponsible and greedy, while the bankers rake in the money.

The poster on Mumsnet was not alone for long. Within a few days, a group of over 30 posters had formed. They asked themselves, "What can we do?".

The idea of a blog was born. Three days later the blog had over thirty authors signed up, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.

The Aims:

  • to open the general publics' eyes to the injustices being created by the governement
  • to inform those who are facing cuts about their rights
  • to link with other activists and charities, in order to put pressure on the government

Are you a Frother?

recommending people donate to their local one?

Good call, Te. Especially if it has the same effect on readers as the OP of the thread you linked to.

MmeLindor. · 08/01/2012 17:24

Yes, good idea.

Wondered about a FB group - SEO's blog has a closed group for discussing stuff about the blog for her authors. Would it be worth setting one up so we could discuss stuff that we would not want to put on here?

I thought about movnig to OTBT but then no new Frothers could join us.

Particularly with regard to the twitter callacab situation, might be good to have a "safe place" for stuff that the general public won't see. Don't want to make trouble for MN either.

Just watched the Filthy Rich and Homeless documentary on iPlayer. It is good so far. How funny that the rich spoiled kids were so dismissive of the homeless, they are lazy, they don't want to work blablahblah.

Shamefully, the only woman in the group was the biggest wimp. Gah.

i think we need to have a thread where we can froth a bit. I think we may have strayed a bit from that and that's why we've lost a few folks. I think they might feel they have to be doing something to be posting here rather than just venting and finding a sanctuary from the depressing news and depressing threads (yet another benefit bashing one going like crazy in AIBU).

I am undecided if it should be closed or open.

Btw, did anyone read this week's Lucy Mangan in The Guardian Weekend mag? She made reference to the food bank stuff. I don't think we should be encouraging people to donate. We should be encouraging them to protest instead. Charities and philanthropists should not be providing what the Welfare State should be providing. There should be no get out for the government.

garlicfrother · 08/01/2012 18:48

Agreed about the food bank perspective, Isla.

Can I just clarify I have nothing to say about public figures that can't be said in public? I'm not keen on the staunch left-wing/feminist/single-issue bits & bobs that find their way into Frothers, but it's a free country and what we set out to do is exercise free speech at a time when mainstream media seem to be ignoring huge chunks of the truth.

I am very impressed by all the bloggers' attention to detail so far. Nothing's been said without reliable research & corroboration - and, just to remind everybody, you can say whatever you like as your personal opinion, so long as it's clearly an opinion.

Don't get too paranoid :)

MmeLindor. · 08/01/2012 19:14

Yes, agree with that too. How ridiculous is it to encourage people to donate to a food bank and what a damning indication of how bad it is that people feel they should.

Yes, you are right. I wonder then whether we should have a blog organisation thread and a frothing thread. Or is that too complicated.

Anyone heard from hunty or Swallowed? Hope they are both ok

OP posts:
IslaDoit · 08/01/2012 19:30

Swallowed was on that thread that got pulled about the boyfriend who wasn't a boyfriend. I think she's ok.

The beginning of this thread has a few non-frothers on that might have put some folk off.

I think blog organisation and a separate frothers sanctuary thread where we can sip tea and chat/rant/console is a good idea.

OpinionatedMum · 08/01/2012 19:36

Our local food banks are struggling there has been such an increase in demand.

Sad
HedleyLamarr · 08/01/2012 20:12

Remember this couple from last year. Expect to see more stories like this.

TeWihara · 08/01/2012 20:25

True, it is a bit big society... perhaps a comparison between food banks and MPs food expenses allowances?

I'm not sure what the action point for protest could be - the reason people need food banks are individual and pressurised by so many of these cuts you can't pinpoint one.

MmeL, I just looked back to the first page after reading Isla's comment, and spotted this:
some companies in UK are paying less taxes than a middle manager does

I remember that being in the new briefly: have you got data somewhere? As you may have guessed, I'm at least as interested in who's gaining from "austerity" as who's suffering. If this population is to be divided, I'd rather it be have-nots against rich piss-takers, iyswim.

MmeLindor. · 09/01/2012 07:31

THIS is the story of the day

Disabled campaigners have published a report that shows that gvmt has ignored objections.

The results are shocking. Overall, we found that of those who responded to the government's consultation, 74% opposed the plans. On individual issues, the opposition was stronger: 98% objected to making people wait longer before they could access financial support; 92% opposed scrapping the lowest rate of support for disabled people; and 99% objected to DLA no longer being used as a qualification for other benefits.

The DLA consultation also breached the government's own code of practice.

Can someone write up a blog post on this?

Have come home from work to a veritable explosion of #spartacusreform on Twitter, brilliant, off to catch up now.

SGM - really interesting but awful about the increase in DV after major sporting fixtures, combined then with cuts to services Sad and scary for many knowing what is coming. Bloody hell.

HedleyLamarr · 09/01/2012 14:14

Twitter update. It is now 74 hours since I first sent a message asking for the reason(s) why my account had been suspended. They are yet to respond.

KnottyLocks · 09/01/2012 14:18

Afternoon.

Twitter is bonkers today...I'm struggling to keep up.

Hedley, 74hrs? Blimey. Great customer service then.

MmeLindor. · 09/01/2012 14:57

Posted on Frothers about Spartacus.

Does anyone else want to follow up? SGM said she would, but no harm in having a few posts on this, since there is a lot of publicity.

IslaDoit · 09/01/2012 15:05

I'm wrestling a deadline but looking forward to Spartacus Report
