"News is coming in of protests and actions around the UK as part of the National Day of Protest Against Benefit Cuts called for the 24th January."

Are any of you likely to be attending this?
I'm thinking of dosing myself up on super strong painkillers and hobbling on over to the London one. Would be nice to meet up with some MNers?

FB event here

Did or did not Cameron say "no bonus over £2000" he was asked by Milliband (PMQ) how this policy was going and he avoided answering the question.

Cameron is a proven liar, wont touch EMA (liar), bankers bonuses (liar), CB will remain universal (liar)

KalokiMallow · 23/01/2011 18:13

"I would rather them target the feckless tossers who don't have a work ethic and who think that this country owes them a living.

Then I would march."

So you wont support the disabled until the "feckless" are stopped? Do you think the disabled are somehow responsible for the "feckless"? Otherwise why do you believe they don't deserve support in the form of protests?

"I would rather them target the feckless tossers who don't have a work ethic and who think that this country owes them a living.

That would be the bankers then would it.

Lose your job on minimum wage and sign on then your a feckless tosser, almost destroy our economy and then be bailed out, then that's ok. How about a huge pension for Fred the shred (a man who destroyed many jobs so as to get a bigger bonus through increased profits) fine with the Tories i should think.

SAME OLD TORY GOVERNMENT SCUM, SAME OLD TORY SUPPORTERS

claig · 23/01/2011 18:32

But Fred the Shred was knighted by Labour for his services to banking. He was close to Gordon Brown. Nothing to do with the Tories, who were asking for tighter regulation, which was refused by Labour.

Here is an article, by a progressive, on Gordon Brown's light touch regulation. Maybe soft touch would have been a better name?

londonprogressivejournal.com/article/285/gordon-brown-and-light-touch-regulation

claig · 23/01/2011 18:34

same old Labour, same progressive policies.
But no one can spin a better yarn and get a bigger yawn than them.

newwave · 23/01/2011 18:49

Craig, as i have said many times before I hold no torch for New Labour, far to Torylite for my taste and far to authoritarian, that said at least they tried to help the poor and needy which the Tories never have.

As for Tories asking for tighter regulation, sorry but you just made that up.

Just remember it was Thatcher who removed most of the city regulations for the benefit of her cronies.

Good article BTW a fair critique of crony capitalism and the need to squeeze the rich for all that they have "cheated" this country out of. The sooner the banks are cut down to size the better, never again should they be "to big to fail" and to be allowed to hold this country to ransom.

claig · 23/01/2011 18:56

Then you agree with St. George Osborne, scourge of the progressives. He said that banks should never be too big to fail

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7989729.stm

He called for an end to Brown's tripartite regulatory system, and wanted the Bank of England to be placed back in charge.

Hammerlikedaisies · 23/01/2011 19:01

Good luck to those of you who are marching on Monday. I'm really glad you're going, and thank you for protesting against this on behalf of everyone else who will ever need some help from the state.

newwave · 23/01/2011 19:02

Then you agree with St. George Osborne, scourge of the progressives. He said that banks should never be too big to fail

Pity he has only held those opinions since the economy crashed, he is a fool in most cases, I loved his praise of the Irish economy in 2007 before the collapse. Say what you may, Gideon has perfect hindsight and is always wise after the event.

Gideon was promising to maintain labours spending levels until it all went tits up.

claig · 23/01/2011 19:07

'Gideon has perfect hindsight and is always wise after the event'

well that's a lot more than Gordon Brown has got.

I think Osborne was calling for it even before the crash, but my googling is not up to finding out.

'Gideon was promising to maintain labours spending levels until it all went tits up.'

Gideon didn't know the real state of the finances. He took a lot of what Labour was telling him at face value. It was only when he took office that he found a note from Liam Byrne saying "there's no money left". Liam Byrne didn't tell Osborne or the nation that during the election.

newwave · 23/01/2011 19:26

Gideon didn't know the real state of the finances. He took a lot of what Labour was telling him at face value.

Of course he did, of course he did.

Claig, please name me one thing the Tories have ever done for the poor and needy, simple request, I cant think of one. I can however think of a few good things they have opposed or nasty things they have done.

Over to you.

KalokiMallow · 23/01/2011 19:37

Disabled people have struggled under both governments.

They are all as bad as each other.

This isn't about one lot of supporters getting one over on the other, this is about helping people who can't help themselves. Arguing about who was worse/better makes no difference. Argue for a change ahead instead.

OP posts:
claig · 23/01/2011 19:46

Do you mean apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh-water system and public health, what have the Conservatives ever done for us?

They have increased the state pension, they have not increased national insurance. They always aim to decrease the tax burden and encourage business to create employment.

But I agree with Kaloki, not only disabled, but many other people have struggled under both governments. It does matter who you vote for, because it affects business and it is business that creates the wealth that can pay for all of our services. Without business friendly policies, our wealth will decline.

newwave · 23/01/2011 19:46

Kalok, sorry but they are not as bad as each other, whilst Labour is very far from perfect they are no way as uncaring as the Tories.

As for "change ahead", yes there will be changes but very much for the worse.

Hossylass · 23/01/2011 19:47

"There's no money left" note is a historical joke from one chancellor to the next.

There is never any money left.
Economies DON'T work like house-keeping, not matter what the Boy says.

claig · 23/01/2011 19:49

this uncaring thing is far too simplistic. Don't you care about the civil liberties of our great country and its people? The Coalition has scrapped Labour's Stalinist schemes. It has torn up hundreds of their bureaucratic rules.

KalokiMallow · 23/01/2011 19:51

newwave I don't know. A fair few of the things causing problems now began with labour, it's just tories have added to it.

I'll admit I'm more pissed off at the tories for adding to it and making it so much worse.

OP posts:
Niceguy2 · 23/01/2011 19:51

erm....Newwave. I know you are no fan of the Tories but the banking crisis happened under Labour. The bailout happened under Labour too.

The huge pension payoff was under Labour rule too.

Oh and when Labour bailed out RBS, Lloyds & HBOS they didn't have the foresight to curb bonuses when they had them by the short & curlies.

So I think what you meant to say was:

SAME OLD TORY LABOUR GOVERNMENT SCUM, SAME OLD TORY LABOUR SUPPORTERS

newwave · 23/01/2011 19:57

"Claig, please name me one thing the Tories have ever done for the poor and needy, simple request, I cant think of one. I can however think of a few good things they have opposed or nasty things they have done".

Try reading "for the poor and needy". not those that are for everyone, as for medicine and public health didn't the Tories oppose the formation of the NHS.

I have already said NL was far to authoritarian.

claig · 23/01/2011 20:00

Well it seems that you don't like New Labour at all. You agree with Gideon about the size of the banks and the need for better regulation. Now if you just get a conscience and start caring about civil liberties and freedom as well, then you would find a home in the Conservative party.

KalokiMallow · 23/01/2011 20:00

So.. any of you planning on going to the protest to show your support for disabled people?

OP posts:
claig · 23/01/2011 20:06

No, I won't be going. But I echo what Hammerlikedaisies said

'Good luck to those of you who are marching on Monday. I'm really glad you're going, and thank you for protesting against this on behalf of everyone else who will ever need some help from the state.'

and good luck to the pensioners' march and to the students as well.

romanygypsywitch · 23/01/2011 20:08

Its all fair and well blaming this person then another person! There are a number of people to blame for the state were in now!

  1. all governments! they have allowed the fraudulant claims and greedy bankers for far to long! they are only punishing the disabled and the truthfull needing people now as they have fucked it and they are in the shit!!

  2. the lazy sit about arseholes who keep popping out kids willy-nilly and claiming fraudulantly! sitting in there homes with all the latest mod cons claiming single person benefits when they actually have a partner working full time living in the house! its fucking scandallous and has gone on for far to long!!
And these teenage yobs who leave school and decide that the dole is the best way to go! so they sit and smoke weed and scrounge off of the tax payers!!

Its a fucking disgusting way of life we live in and someone somewhere needs to stand up and be heard!!!

We need to cut JSA for anyone who has been on it for more than 6months and not had any job or refused training!

we need to be having housing officers going to peoples houses and checking their claims are not fraudulant! and making a bloody example of these who think it is their god given right to get free money forever!!

What we dont need is the tax payer having all these rises on fuel & food!! £12.79 for 10 litres of petrol!! its fucking a rip off!

We should not be cutting DLA payments just because it will help the deficit! we should be checking what individual people need and ensuring they are allocated the money which they need to be able to survive!

As the public we need to remember we voted the Tories into power! and previously voted Labour into power! We have the power to make changes and make ourselves heard!!

claig · 23/01/2011 20:11

'the lazy sit about arseholes who keep popping out kids willy-nilly and claiming fraudulantly! sitting in there homes with all the latest mod cons claiming single person benefits when they actually have a partner working full time living in the house!'

please, can we stop bringing the MPs into this?
