NUS thugs must be arrested and thrown out of their unis

Criminal damage, arson, assualt - even attempted murder (throwing a fire extinguisher into the crowd from the roof). This is unacceptable behaviour.

I am disappointed that the police didn't have a grip on the situation.

The only good thing to come out of all this is that it will totally undermine support for the NUS and Labour. The new solution isn't perfect but takes all the important steps. It is a vast improvement on the current situation.

Any destabilization of society is desirable up them Anastasia. But I agree, often trouble makers at protests don't even bother to claim any political allegiance, and are just there for a fight.
Nus certainly will not have condoned or organised the disorder-by the sounds of it the Nus/police briefing prior today did not include this level of violence/attack on property hence the police being caught out. A peaceful (but shouty) march has been the aim.

LadyBlaBlah · 10/11/2010 21:05

Did I dream it today or did David "cap immigration because it is the root of all evil" Conmaneron actually say that the rise in tuition fees for UK citizens will help Chinese students to come and study in England because it will lower prices for them?

I am sure I must be mistaken because again that would be staggering hypocrisy, an insult to people in this country and furthermore do nothing "to get us out of this unholy mess that Labour left us in" Hmm

Although on the other hand it would be a vacuous, idiotic and play-to-the-audience without conviction thing to say, so is probably true.

legostuckinmyhoover · 10/11/2010 21:14

imo, i can't see this undermining support for labour. in fact i can't see it undermining support for the NUS either.

everyone knows that it was mostly a peaceful demonstration, and a demonstration for a very worthy cause.

i am so glad that the young in our society can see how these proposals are so unfair and wrong and i am glad they are trying to do something about it. good for them and good on the NUS!

legostuckinmyhoover · 10/11/2010 21:20

i would suggest to anyone who thinks that this amount of debt is alright to have at the start of your adult life...go and try it, try living with that burden of debt and stress...not just for a year but for YEARS and YEARS.

legostuckinmyhoover · 10/11/2010 21:23

ladyblahblah, have you got a link? that's shocking.

Remotew · 10/11/2010 21:32

It was great to see so many of the students gathered today, most of whom won't personally be subject to the proposed hike in fees. It needs people to care about future school leavers. Shame it got out of hand but a point needed to be made.

legostuckinmyhoover · 10/11/2010 22:09

just watched it Confused

claig · 10/11/2010 22:12

I'm not surprised. Labour would have done the same.

Does anyone know how many billions are involved if we made university education free?

MoreSpamThanGlam · 10/11/2010 22:13

Isnt it nice that Cameron is thinking about lowering fees for Chinese students and fuck us lot.

claig · 10/11/2010 22:14

I think university education is free in China, with its millions of students. Go figure.

claig · 10/11/2010 22:36

I think we only have about 477,277 UK students. I wonder how many China has?

madamimadam · 10/11/2010 23:02

OP, I actually think you're Harriet Harman letting her hair down with some Tory roleplay...

longfingernails · 10/11/2010 23:37

LoopyLoops Nothing - I got accused of being Michael Gove Hmm and a small side discussion developed from there.

LadyBlaBla He didn't say it would be cheaper for Chinese students. He said it would limit the rise in fees. One of the good side benefits of home students paying more will be that universities will discriminate less against home students - though there will still be a difference. At the moment, universities have strong preferences for foreign students, because they got more money, with less hassle.

madamimadam I do think we could shrink our police force dramatically (by at least 15-20%) , if we had a massive clearout of police paperwork and bureaucracy. The failure of the police today was because they didn't think a student demo would get out of control, despite the ugly history of violence at left-wing protests - nothing to do with operational capability.

Oh - and I can categorically deny that Harriet Harman! Though I did think she did very well at PMQs today - she completely got the better of Clegg. The Labour coordination of questions was very impressive.

Unfortunately for Labour, the issue is now associated in the public mind with violent thugs.

Riven that was not an outrageous slur, saying that Longfingernails is the Mail in person it was pure ignorance on your part! So what if longfingernails reads the Mail, Times, or any other paper.

I read the Mail and it's a bloody good read!

For those who say these are only 'people's children' I say they are 'adult' thugs, anyone who smashes windows and throws a fire extinquisher from a roof is a thug!

I bet that the socialist workers were in midst of this somewhere, these Marxist b'stards are always around and cause trouble at many demos.
If I could be the voice of any paper it would be the Sun, Mirror, Daily Mail, Daily Star ( for the pin-ups ) my husband loves them! Lastly the Times or Telegraph.
Grin

Longfingernails. You forget that our once deputy Priminster John Prescott was a right thug, he punched a man who threw an egg at him and still kept his job. lots, of lovely thugs in the Labour party.

longfingernails · 10/11/2010 23:57

complimentary On the contrary. Punching the egg-thrower is just about the only thing John Prescott ever did which I applauded him for.

It was obviously in self-defence - actually I think most people just said "good on him".

Those of you who think that these thugs weren't students should listen to Radio 5 now. They spoke to a student called Emmaline who was on the roof and condoned the break in and violence. If her mother is a MNetter she must be so proud of her dd Hmm.

Forturmately other sensible student called in and said they didn't agree with Emmaline and her type. According to her, breaking the law is the only way to protest. With that level of intellect I'm amazed she managed to enrol in a degree course in the first place.

chippy47 · 11/11/2010 00:05

LFN. Gove is a fucking idiot Tory wet yes man with a personal agenda to look after number one at all times. And an annoying prick at the same time.
The lib dems are a disgrace -manifesto pledges should be legally binding as it is the basis of why people vote.
Nick Clegg personally signed the NUS pledge document that categorically stated their opposition to any, that is any, rise in tuition fees.
Last week, when it was announced, I listened to some Lib dem no mark trying to dress the rise up as something that was not an increase - £3k to £9k -because it would be recovered as a tax - people still have to pay it back you fecking dick. Disgrace ,disgrace ,disgrace, disgrace ad infinitum
And the expected job surge in the private sector is not going to happen. 65% (from memory) of the private company CEOs who backed the Tory cuts, in an open letter to the Times, have sanctioned redundancies and lay offs within their own companies within the past 12 months and are predicting more within the nect 12 months.
It does not add up and George Osborne (inexperienced public school no idea how the real world live twunt)should not be dictating a recovery plan that is doomed.

God that felt good!

complimentary · 11/11/2010 00:06

Longfingernails. Him with secretary in office, leg-over, now that was really stomach churning! Grin I hope you didn't applaud him for that!

MaMoTTaT · 11/11/2010 00:53

Don't forget MolliO - that you can join NUS if you're attending college as well, or even doing distance learning........a

Tortington · 11/11/2010 00:54

i'm rather glad there was an uprising.
