NUS thugs must be arrested and thrown out of their unis

Criminal damage, arson, assualt - even attempted murder (throwing a fire extinguisher into the crowd from the roof). This is unacceptable behaviour.

I am disappointed that the police didn't have a grip on the situation.

The only good thing to come out of all this is that it will totally undermine support for the NUS and Labour. The new solution isn't perfect but takes all the important steps. It is a vast improvement on the current situation.

I thought you read The Sun and swore by it LGF Wink

Anyhow, am sure we'll find out soon enough once the names of those arrest are published along with where they don't study

Biscuitscoco · 10/11/2010 18:47

Yes would it make a difference if the offending parties threw down a wodge of cash and said "that should take care of things my man"?

tigerchilli · 10/11/2010 18:48

Yup, didn't Boris throw a plant-pot through a restaurant window?

On one of their Tally-Ho! spiffing, jolly, jaunts. Grin

longfingernails · 10/11/2010 18:49

Those members of the Bullingdon who smash property should be arrested too.

As for newspapers - the Mail opposes rises in tuition fees, and cuts to child benefit, because they will mostly impact "Middle Britain".

Actually, I have my Mail and even Sun moments, I must admit - especially when it comes to the EU - but my political philosophy is definitely closer to that of the Times. I do worry though that they are sometimes too "high Tory" - for the Tories to consistently win they need to cultivate more "low Tories" like Thatcher did.

I have to go and do something useful. Arguing with virtual Tories is depressing. It's the insensitive unkindness that gets me every time. Going to peel some spuds.

southeastastra · 10/11/2010 19:01

good!

MoreSpamThanGlam · 10/11/2010 19:02

I am a mature student and I marched from LSE to Millbank and it was peaceful apart from the sudden surge of people in hoodies with their faces covered that started to smash parts of Millbank.

Longfingernails - I wish you had been there today. the students would have LOVED to hear your opinions.

longfingernails · 10/11/2010 19:05

I am sure they would support the fact that the 25% lowest paid graduates would pay less under the new system than they do currently. Very "progressive".

LFN - I just knew it would be you posting this. Predictable - tedious...zzzzzzz.....

longfingernails · 10/11/2010 19:10

MagdaMagyarMadam I don't think talking about the attempt by a protestor to murder riot police is tedious, and thankfully, not in the least predictable!

OP posts:
MagdaMagyarMadam · 10/11/2010 19:12

My aplogies, I should have made myself a little clearer; you and your opinions are predictable and tedious.

MagdaMagyarMadam · 10/11/2010 19:12

apologies

MoreSpamThanGlam · 10/11/2010 19:14

LFN - how silly of those students to not realise how much better off they are under this new scheme! Silly students1

Perhaps all those disability claimants could now go and clean up after the protesters...it will give them something to do...the slackers!

mamatomany · 10/11/2010 19:20

The real students hadn't got out of bed til noon so they had an alibi.

longfingernails · 10/11/2010 19:20

MoreSpamThanGlam Of course students won't like it, but what is the alternative, given there is less than no money left?

I would personally cut the proportion of people going to university down - the 50% target is very silly.

A true "graduate tax" won't work, by the way. Smart people in Labour realise that:

labour-uncut.co.uk/2010/11/10/sadly-its-a-graduate-tax-that-is-stupid-not-vince-cable/

The question that Labour just can't answer: "What would you do?"

seashells is quite right.
I am appalled at the media coverage of what was an exceptionally good humoured and peaceful gathering. The protest itself was simply not violent. I personally believe that a few troublemakers hijacked the protest- and i doubt that all of them are students. Some may be. This does not create a precedent to write off the NUS as criminal thugs. We cannot however legislate for hideous right wing prejudice, so I suspect that only the unwise few students who got involved in the attempted occupation of Millbank will get criminal records...

allegrageller · 10/11/2010 19:24

morespam, the facebook group Nobody Likes a Tory has come up with the same solution! Workshy 'fake disabled' to go and clean up! Problem solved...

weblette · 10/11/2010 19:25

Oh I had a little bet with myself that I could guess who the OP of this would be without even opening the thread Grin

Dh has been on a number of protests - you seethe hoodies in red and black surge forward, and cause trouble. They are there no matter what. SWP always have a presence but they wouldn't condone violence. I saw the coaches go this morning-alot of staff and proactive students, not people out to fight police (though burning placards, maybe)

Isn't it time we started to protest against these plans? Why the apathy? I don't condone the violence but thank goodness students are actually protesting about something!!

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 10/11/2010 20:19

Sorry hoodies/red/black are rent a anarchist in dh's experience

anastaisia · 10/11/2010 20:23

why would anarchists against state spending be protesting against cuts to state spending?

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 10/11/2010 20:25

They are there for the fight not for the cause, just as football hooligans dont care about the match.

anastaisia · 10/11/2010 20:26

so they aren't actually anarchists then. Just hooligans...

LoopyLoops · 10/11/2010 20:35

OP, what have teachers unions to do with this?
