cuts - Wednesday's Spending Review

Brace yourself ladies - these cuts are big, there will be tens of thousands of public sector redundancies and it's said (by the Fawcett Society amongst others) that they will disproportionately affect women.

Some workers will get some sort of payoff, and some will be pleased to go. Some will find new jobs.

But I reckon the overall effect (licks finger and holds it in the wind) will be to drive down women's wages, meaning that once you are made redundant from your public sector post you may find more work but it will be at a lower rate and the extra competition for jobs across the board will drive wages down across the board. This may be true for men as well but I think it will affect women - mums - more.

If you are watching the press coverage on Weds, what do you think the effects of the cuts and the job losses for women (and mums) will be?

Can't seem to get a straight answer on any websites so thought I'd join mumsnet and speak to fellow mums. I am a single mum working 16 hours a week supporting 2 children, in the new WTC cuts will I have to work 24 hours a week even though I'm on my own or is it 24 hours a week joint and a lesser amount for single mums?

I have just changed jobs to be closer to home to save travelling costs and only work 16 hours there is not the opportunity to increase my hours as it is a small business.

Is anything going to replace the WTC for mums that work only 16 hours a week or are they just going to leave me high and dry?

poxoxo · 21/10/2010 11:59

I think you're going to have to work 24 hours a week to get wtc sweetpeas12

sweetpeas12 · 21/10/2010 12:03

Thanks a straight answer. I'm willing to work more hours it's just finding it especially in this climate wish me luck!

molemesses · 21/10/2010 12:04

The only I can think of Riven is just to hope that the councils stop squandering the money of stuff that isnt really that important - like new seating in Town Centres, stylish bins, big pebbles or orbs that serve no actual service but something shiney to look at.

Until then I dread to think what the money is wasted on...(said by someone who has just had a letter through her door saying she is to receive yet another bin bringing the total to 4 bins).

ImGideonsMumAndIHateHimToo · 21/10/2010 12:09

Sweetpeas- actually, single mums are exempt. You should be OK.

Still struggling to find out when TC changes come in?

ImGideonsMumAndIHateHimToo · 21/10/2010 12:11

H Mole IKWYM

the amount of council funded tata and atmospheric under bridge lighting we acquired prior to the whole ryder cup rainfest is mind boggling; thousands of red flags anyone, all ebaring humourous mottoes? Whilst TAs are ebing cut from the school over which they cast their shadows?.

molemesses · 21/10/2010 12:12

Thank you ImGidionsMum..that's a weight off my mind too. I'm going to see if I can get any extra hours later anyway..still waiting for boss to get back to me.

ImGideonsMumAndIHateHimToo · 21/10/2010 12:15

here we go from ITV news:

'TAX CREDITS

Couples with children will only be able to claim Working Tax Credit if they work at least 24 hours a week between them, in addition to the existing requirement that one partner must work at least 16 hours a week.

'

Now, does a family with one parent working 24 hours still get it I wonder? Or do they boht have to work?

molemesses · 21/10/2010 12:16

I think they BOTH have to work to get WTC with one working at least 16 hours a week. That's how I've read it anyway.

ImGideonsMumAndIHateHimToo · 21/10/2010 12:23

Right so carers and disbaled completely out then?

molemesses · 21/10/2010 12:25

They SHOULD be excluded from the rule - but wether they are I'm not sure.

I'll see if I can find out.

ImGideonsMumAndIHateHimToo · 21/10/2010 12:27

Thwy're not; ntohing built in for safety.

I am lucky- Dh is opening up his business to a aprtnership. We don;t amke much but it fits the technical criteria and should some day.

But i'll be honest: I love my Dh very much but in truth me and him working together- nah, not a good idea. compeltely screw up teh poer balance in our relationship for a start

CatIsSleepy · 21/10/2010 12:29

i haven't read the thread, no time, am at work, but have been seething since yesterday and just want to say

the TORIES ARE UTTER WANKERS

they are picking on the poorest
they have no notion of fairness
I am utterly disgusted by the cuts to sickness benefits after a year

and most of all am aghast at the cuts to council funding-they will affect ALL OF US

and these losses of public sector jobs that people so blithely assume won't affect them-of course they bloody will. The public sector provides services that we all use and fewer employees means vital services will be affected.

I've always hated the tories, this just confirms what I've always thought about them with the added difference that I now hate the Libdems almost as much and will never cast a vote in their direction again (not that i voted for them in the general election and I'm bloody glad I didn't)

molemesses · 21/10/2010 12:31

I've found these so far which are a bit clearer:

DWP sources have said those affected will not include the seriously disabled and ill. They say the measure is designed to deter those who have minor ailments from seeking to remain on the benefit long term.

In addition, people aged under 35 will only be able to claim housing benefit for a room in a shared house rather than their own flat. The mobility allowance will also be cut for care home residents.

The working tax credit rules will also be tightened so that couples with children will have to work at least 24 hours a week between them in order to claim it.

ImGideonsMumAndIHateHimToo · 21/10/2010 12:33

OK- so does between tehm mean Dh can do his existing 16 and me 8, or he can take on 24?

Sorry if a bit dim Blush

molemesses · 21/10/2010 12:34

I agree with you about working with DH. I did that with mine for 4 years while he set up his own business. It just put a lot of strain on the relationship that wasnt needed so he went self employed and I went out to work when the youngest started full time school.

AnnoyingOrange · 21/10/2010 12:36

This is what GO actually said:

"We will change the Working Tax Credit eligibility rules so that couples with children must work 24 hours per week between them"

note "couples" - he doesn't mention single parent families

AnnoyingOrange · 21/10/2010 12:37

I am assuming that means one half of the couple could work the 24 or they could split the hours between them (one person working at least 16 hrs)
