cuts - Wednesday's Spending Review

Brace yourself ladies - these cuts are big, there will be tens of thousands of public sector redundancies and it's said (by the Fawcett Society amongst others) that they will disproportionately affect women.

Some workers will get some sort of payoff, and some will be pleased to go. Some will find new jobs.

But I reckon the overall effect (licks finger and holds it in the wind) will be to drive down women's wages, meaning that once you are made redundant from your public sector post you may find more work but it will be at a lower rate and the extra competition for jobs across the board will drive wages down across the board. This may be true for men as well but I think it will affect women - mums - more.

If you are watching the press coverage on Weds, what do you think the effects of the cuts and the job losses for women (and mums) will be?

How is the deficit the Tories or the Liberals fault

Kiwichick74 · 21/10/2010 10:47

poxoxo: That was what I was trying to say but you said it better thanks. I would like to add and I know I will be unpopular again for saying this but when I started our family I took it on as mine and my husbands role to provide and care for our children not the state people should not take it for granted or include in there budgets all of these benfits. I do not mean this for everyone I want to pay my taxes to help people who have bad circumstances not everyone gets a break in life and I think we do need to help those in need.

dreamingofsun · 21/10/2010 10:48

if you smoke a couple of boxes of fags a day you can hardly complain about bad health - however, rich or poor you are. just a shame both her children ended up with asthma

ImGideonsMumAndIHateHimToo · 21/10/2010 10:49

It's not entirely that of any one pary: I posted a quote soemwhere else that said it was somewhat unpredictable will find agin in a mo

I missed this bit ysterday but have C&P's it from The Guardian comments: anyone know any mroe?

'The spending review included the commitment to withdraw sickness benefit or disability benefit from people whose spouses are employed.
'

And the other quote:

Carl Emmerson, acting director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, said it remained to be seen whether the government could achieve its ambitious objectives. He said: "A key lesson from the last Labour government and the last Conservative government is that the public finances often do not behave as expected."

Well kiwi me too about the planning for providing for htem: but the only people dependent on welfare on this thread are arers and we have been hit; we usually fall under your caveat of the needy.

shinybootsofleather · 21/10/2010 10:52

But Kiwichick74, employers are able to pay cr#ppy wages to those people who rely on tax credits simply because the tax credit system is in existence. It's a vicious circle. If they remove them for families on £23k ish joint income in 2012, the end result will be that many families will be plunged into poverty.

Yes Kiwi, most of us do. Then little blips appear on the golden horizon, like breast cancer at 41.

Hi Riven - Thanks for replying; sorry my 'brainwave' was no use - pity. But I take your point that, even in a bigger house the screaming at night might make the idea unworkable.
There may be a way of making things a bit better; I suppose there could be something neither of us have thought of - so if any other MNers have any suggestions I expect they'll post them.
Again - best wishes and fingers crossed for helpful ideas which might improve things for you and your husband.

Sorry your child is ill but I am not going to waver on my opinons. As for us all ending up in the poor house please stop with the dramas public service's have had it good for ten years now like everything that must come full circle it is there time for some changes I don't mean miltary or health care. Even with all of this money we had in the last ten years people complained they still weren't getting enough so when is enough enough?. Now I must go and do some work to help pay for this problem.

ImGideonsMumAndIHateHimToo · 21/10/2010 11:10

I have never complained about wanting more, or about paying taxes when I did; DH still does, of course, but that counts for nowt in MN land.

DH is going toc all TC p[eople and tell tehm he will do 30 hours from tonight, which he will do. But it menas I have to do ds1's and ds3 bedtimes alone, which means that I and ds2 are palced at further risk of injury above what we already regularly sustain.

But of course we're worthless benefit claimants and a few smacks / bites / dislcoated jaws from an asd ten year old is the lesson we deserve, right?

Every single eprson who is critical of my family, pray tell me what you would have done differently?

Remembering that the sole block to chidlcare etc is DS1, our firstb orn, who wasn;t diagnosed until otehr kids here.

If you can't make sensible suggestions then piss off with your sanctimonious claptrap.

It would never happen to you.

Wanna bet?

And I am assuming that should you or yur DP be taken out of employment for soem reason- sickness or caring or whatever- and you become redujndant that you will reduse to claim out of the same principles you expect everyone else to adhre to.

natch.
