Is the crisis in the Catholic Church being mentioned in mass today?

I'm an ex-Catholic and know that many practising Catholics are finding the current situation very difficult to process. Wondered if it was being referred to in sermons today, either in a direct or roundabout way? Genuinely interested.

Can African men not keep their pants on? Sorry, but blaming the Pope for AIDS deaths in Africa is just ridiculous. The Pope did not advocate raping virgins/little girls (South African practice) as a means of fending off AIDS. The Pope did not recommend vitamins and garlic as a treatment for AIDS (again, South Africa).

Do the people of Africa the honour of treating them as adults capable of making their own decisions: Catholic teaching on sex outside of marriage is clear and known in Africa as elsewhere. Same goes for condom use and other forms of contraception. African men who sleep around and spread AIDS to their wives and other sexual partners choose to ignore both the Catholic Church and many health organisations that are not affiliated with the Catholic Church, on both the abstinence and the condom issue.

'Also, when the pope says tht homesexuality or premaritl sex is wrong, people realise that this is ridiculous to base it on an anarcharnist story book and pretend its anthing other than that.'

"Anachronistic story book" is Catholic (and Christian in general) bashing. It's one thing to criticise the crimes committed against children by priests and nuns, and nobody in their right mind defends any of that. It's another thing entirely to criticise the entire religion and call a text held sacred by no less than 3 major organised religions a "story book".

Heard on Radio 4 the other day someone about to kick off about abuse at the hands of an Anglican minister....

FalafelAtYourFeet · 04/04/2010 22:58

Is everyone going to switch to Anglican bashing instead now then
i bet that's a no then

so it was mentioned during Easter mass at our church - I thought it was completely inappropriate to discuss it on possibly the most important day of the Christian calendar.

PrammyMammy · 05/04/2010 13:47

I was at mass every day last week, it wans't mentioned at any of them held in my parish, but our Cardinal offered an apology at the Chrism Mass on Tuesday.
Our Easter Vigil was just over 3 hours long, and i expected it to be mentioned in the homily, but i was glad it wasn't really, as the mass was beautiful and it wasn't the time or place imo. In saying that i did expect it to be mentioned in my parish at some point during the week.

It was briefly mentioned not very well where we were on Sunday.

What we really is a lot more research into people's innate sexual interests, how they are formed and how they are stopped or changed, as well of course as appropriate child protection. Most child abuse is in the family home by parents sadly and there is and always has been far too much of it about and it should never be covered up.

If my church werent' sexist and tehre were at least as many women in charge and of course the ultimate goal of a women Pope it would all have been a lot better and God would have been a lot happier.

'Catholic bashing'

Defined as anger that the organisation known as the catholic church knowingly and wilfully allowed the abuse of children. Ordered its members to keep the facts from the police and moved abusers around to prevent them being punished or stopped. Thus providing them with fresh victims.

That its current leader personally wrote letters ordering the cover up to continue.

That a senior member of the organisation compared the criticism they are getting for these atrocities to the mass murder of jews.

That even now the organisation is obstructing justice in several countries in order to prevent the abusers from being arrested.

blinks · 06/04/2010 14:11

here here onagar.

if this was any other type of organisation, it was be very different.

and mathsanxiety- it seems you need educating on your own religion.

it's been well noted that the official Vatican line re:condoms in African and Asian continents in that condoms are 'useless' as the virus can permeate them... they reckon, in the face of proof, that there are holes through which the virus can pass through. (as per Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo,

in countries like Kenya where approx 20% of people carry the virus, such utter ignorance is indeed dangerous. the claim that condoms themselves promote promiscuity is commonly used by the Catholic church, in these countries and the WHO's battle to counteract this is well documented.

all this 'can african men not keep their pants on' shite is laughable.... i can imagine they can keep their pants on as much as any man or any woman for that matter.

but hey ho, what does it all matter? as long as you all had lonely easter services. that's the main thing.

Bumbleconfusus · 06/04/2010 18:52

blinks - abstinence & fidelity has a very important role in the prevention of spreading AIDS, its not just about condoms. If you look at some of the North african countries which have almost half the cases of HIV than the UK, you can see that the promotion of fidelity etc makes a massive difference in combating the spread of HIV. I can promise you they do not go around to 13yo school girls in Algeria as they do in the UK and give out condoms, so how come they do not have such a high incidence rate if they are not promoted to use condoms as much as the UK. Could it be that there is another answer than to use condoms?

blinks · 06/04/2010 22:25

lonely = lovely.

aids in north africa isn't monitored the way it is in the middle and southern regions. In 2008, an estimated 35 000 people in the Middle East and North Africa became infected with HIV, and 20 000 AIDS-related deaths occurred. The total number of people living with HIV in the region at the end of 2008 was estimated to be 310 000.

the cultural stereotype of north and southern african people either being abstinent or sexually promiscuous is bogus and ill informed.

in certain areas the horse has bolted and promotion of condom use would be beneficial to everyone. the catholic church's unwillingness to even recognise that condoms prevent the spread of HIV is a major stumbling block for all organisations who are trying to stem the spread of HIV.
