RE issue at school.

It's a C of E school and I was asked this in RE today, so I said

"well, no - we aren't sure exactly what day he was born on, but the festival of lights was at the time, so the Christians use this to remember the birth of Jesus because they believe Jesus is the light of the world."

It transpires that one MUST tell the children that Jesus was born on Christmas day. As in 25th December. Because word of mouth from the time of his birth confirms this

Is it me, or is that a tad ..... false?!

well- my objections to scottishmummy were not on the grounds of her ignorance about the existance or non-existance of Jesus, ie a real person- they were actually to how rude she was using the term 'JHC' as an epithet- which is offensive whether you are a christian or not tbh.

EachPeachPearMum · 03/12/2008 20:01

you came back!
What is stoated please?

ScottishMummy · 03/12/2008 20:03

you presume it to be ignorance because it non concordant with your beliefs.more liberal folk might just acknowledge divergent belief without need to cry ignorant

EachPeachPearMum · 03/12/2008 20:05

erm- I AM ATHEIST... what beliefs are you referring to?

ScottishMummy · 03/12/2008 20:06

stoated Scottish colloqualism i was passing, popped in.i struggle with the rigidity of thinking expressed here

so we don't agree.that is evident

i don't presume ignorance here,in fact i am assuming a fair scholarly interest/knowledge

ah but you assume less of me
because we dont agree

morningpaper · 03/12/2008 20:07

lol @

immaterial when so called jesus was born,he doesnt exist. at best a pleasant fairy tale.

you are all touchy

EachPeachPearMum · 03/12/2008 20:10

stoated is pooped in- interesting, thank you.

may I ask why you think it is a lie that a chap called jesus was born and existed, when there is quite a lot of documentation saying he did actually exist. I am not suggesting for a moment that he was the son of god- I certainly don't believe that, but I do not deny that he was born and lived. It would be like saying Hadrian did not exist or aristotle, or Herodotus.
Sorry- that's why I thought it was ignorance on your part.

EachPeachPearMum · 03/12/2008 20:16

oh.....honestly popped in, gah!

To the OP sadly there are people that prescribe how religion should be taught and it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the truth.

In a Sunday school class a few weeks ago a little boy asked what "sabbath" meant. Before the teacher could answer the mischievious boy in the class said " it depends what religion you are - the sabbath is generally the day of the week you set aside to worship" - I thought it was a fabulous answer - the teacher corrected him and said no "billy" Sabbath means Sunday.

hullygully · 03/12/2008 20:23

You mean the Holocaust was TRUE?

Alambil · 03/12/2008 20:33

It really pissed me off tbh.

I had FIVE minutes to discuss Hanukkah as I was meant to compare Advent / Christmas with Hanukkah.

Five minutes out of an hour - the rest HAD to be about advent "because we're a church school"

Well, that's nice inclusion and tolerance, I think not.

no Lewis you are right

is the Head a sensible sort?

Do you want me to find an article by Rowan Williams that says the same thing?

devoutsceptic · 03/12/2008 20:54

stand your ground then. You are right.
