OP posts:
expatinscotland · 31/10/2008 22:58

and overdosing on drugs (david kennedy, one of RFK's 11).

DumbledoresGirl · 31/10/2008 22:59

Expat essentially.

Screaming racism at me but ignoring my (extremely valid) comparisons between BO (oh dear, only just realised what his initials are) and JFK.

expatinscotland · 31/10/2008 22:59

but, hey, at least Arnie can never run for President .

Heathcliffscathy · 31/10/2008 22:59

oh no!!! not BO!!!! no no no no!!!!!

OP posts:
DumbledoresGirl · 31/10/2008 23:00

LOL, it is hysterical isn't it?

expatinscotland · 31/10/2008 23:00

'Screaming racism at me but ignoring my (extremely valid) comparisons between BO (oh dear, only just realised what his initials are) and JFK.'

DG, you do realise that a whole host of somewhat chilling parallels have also been drawn between JFK and the assasination of Abraham Lincoln?

Wiki it, it's really kind of freaky!

DumbledoresGirl · 31/10/2008 23:00

Can you imagine, if the worst were to happen, do you think they would name an airport after him? I'm flying to BO.....

expatinscotland · 31/10/2008 23:00

oh, and that weedy David Tennant is leaving Dr. Who.

DumbledoresGirl · 31/10/2008 23:01

Oh do tell Expat, (can't be bothered to wiki).

Was JFK coming back from the theatre too?

DumbledoresGirl · 31/10/2008 23:02

I know - saw him announce it. Didn't we know this already anyway? My children have been talking about the next regeneration for months...

I am not upset. I hate Dr Who anyway, only watched it for DT. He will be in other (better) things.

Though, not heard of Chritopher Eccleston since....

expatinscotland · 31/10/2008 23:04

Lincoln was in a theatre when he was shot.

then his killer fled to a warehouse.

JFK was shot from a warehouse and then the killer fled to a theatre.

and a bunch of other weird shit like that.

DumbledoresGirl · 31/10/2008 23:05

Oh yes that is freaky. I guess if you were trying to escape justice, you might hide in a large or well populated building though.

expatinscotland · 31/10/2008 23:09

i'm so going to miss seeing DT .

maybe he'll come back home and hang round some more . . .

DumbledoresGirl · 31/10/2008 23:10

I think he already hangs enough.

And so DG's mind turns full circle and she exits this thread on the same smutty note that she first entered it.

expatinscotland · 31/10/2008 23:12

grabs the bucket.

vom!

Heathcliffscathy · 31/10/2008 23:31

expat wish you were watching newsnight interview with toni morrison.

she doesn't agree with you with regards to race in america at all.

she just said she felt that racism ran through middle america.

she also said that an obama win would be a victory for black americans but MORE so for white americans, in that it would be a moral shift in them.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 01/11/2008 12:15

toni's been living away from america even longer than i have, soph.

and she's African-American.

she'll view it from a different perspective from a Hispanic American female, which i am. not to mention the 20+ years she's been living in Paris.

i see people who vote for or endorse a candidate because of his race, no matter what, as just that: be they white people who don't vote for Obama because he is bi-racial or people of colour who vote for him because he is bi-racial.

but you see, that's what most Brits don't get about America: it's not about black and white because it's ethnic minority makeup is anything but.

i don't expect them to get it unless they live there or have spent A LOT of time there because that's what their media feeds them, the same way the media feeds many people ideas about the British.

Heathcliffscathy · 01/11/2008 18:34

she made the point that she would never vote for a candidate just because of their colour, that there were many black people she wouldn't want to be in the same room as let alone give the presidency. same for women, not enough that hillary was a woman.

the points that she made were not mutually exclusive.

I have a small amount of personal experience: my texan cousin was incredibly shocked that my best friend at school was black. she wasn't disgusted or anything just amazed that it could happen. I don't think she is completely weird, in fact I think she typical of the area she lives in in texas.

OP posts:
Heathcliffscathy · 01/11/2008 18:35

and i'm not for a second suggesting that there isn't a huge amount of racism in this country.

OP posts:
ilovemydog · 01/11/2008 18:41

Really? Toni Morrison lives in Paris?

But she's on Oprah all the time!

expatinscotland · 01/11/2008 18:42

there are about 24m people living in Texas according to the last census 8 years ago.

please stop making generalisations about them, regardless of the area they grew up in.

i grew up in a Catholic, Conservative home. my beliefs are different in many ways from my parents' as my childrens' may be from mine and all of which can change with time.

but we don't go around assuming they believe a certain way because they're Scottish, so why do it to others continually and assume it's okay because it pertains to America?

it's not appreciated anymore than you would appreciate it and it's lazy thinking and assumption just like any type of generalisation about any group of people.

expatinscotland · 01/11/2008 18:44

'But she's on Oprah all the time!'

Yes, she does, although I can imagine a woman of her means may in fact have more than one abode.

Oprah's got a Gulfstream with her own private pilot .

I remember Mike Wallace interviewing her once and apologising for holding her up, as he knew she needed to get to London.

He asked when her flight was leaving.

She replied slyly that it would leave when she was ready.

Heathcliffscathy · 01/11/2008 19:02

she's a huge herione of mine. youtube the interview, it was great.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 01/11/2008 19:22

i want to live in Paris.
