dd (5) when I was putting her to bed last night (saying the Hail Mary)

"Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Play with our scissors,
Now and at the hour of our death
Amen"

Since starting school the only prayer DS wants to say at night is 'Grace before meals'

Someone on here told me about 'teaspoon prayers' - tsp - they say a thank-you, sorry and please. I think it's lovely.

Countingthegreyhairs · 17/09/2008 13:27

Sorry, only just checked back in to this thread ...

Bree - I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere ... body parts/Sacred hearts/pull yourself together ... too brain dead to think of it right now ....

....well converts are always welcome MaryBS (always much more devout than cradle Catholics!!)

Will definitely check that out InLoveWithSweeneyT - can get Spanish TV over here - sounds delightful

Squiffy - my dd sometimes sings "grace before bed" as well ... off to check out teaspoon prayers ....

LOL Counting!!! I WAS a cradle Catholic (and a very devout one too), now I'm an Anglican! I know what you lot are like, ain't no way I'm coming back

Countingthegreyhairs · 18/09/2008 14:52

LOL MaryBS!! Gosh! Don't know of many who have converted from RC to C of E, discounting married Anglican priests of course ...(do you have something to declare??? ) ...it's usually in the other direction isn't it?

How intriguing ....although dh 'threatens' to do so on a regular basis come to think of it ...(usually right after the sermon at Sunday mass)

There goes another good 'un ....

Countingthegreyhairs · 18/09/2008 15:20

sorry, I rather over-did the s there !!!

I made up a whole song about cheese once when my daughter asked me to sing 'Cheese is wonderful' because they sang it at her Baptist pre-school. I couldn't understand why she hated my song so much and explained that I didn't really know any songs about cheese. It was only after helping at pre-school I realised the song was 'Jesus' love is really wonderful'!!!! Ooops.

MaryBS · 18/09/2008 15:39

Counting, there are quite a few ex-holy rollers in our congregation! In fact our vicar used me for a Recruitment drive once "this is Mary, she used to be RC too", to a potential new member of our congregation... who is now our churchwarden. Its called swimming the Thames (the other way is swimming the Tiber).

I'm one of those rejects who is divorced/remarried and chose not to go for an annulment.

Countingthegreyhairs · 18/09/2008 18:42

maryBS - at 'reject'

'tis madness .... and it's our loss !!

Tbh I sometimes often wonder why I am still in the left-footer brigade ...

MaryBS · 18/09/2008 22:53

To be fair, I think the RCC does a better job of handling it now.

Our vicar did once say to me the RCC's loss is "our" gain.

In some ways I miss being part of the RCC, but on the other hand, I can believe pretty much everything I did there and be an Anglican. AND I am valued as a woman to preach and teach the gospel message, would have never happened in the RCC!

Weegiemum · 19/09/2008 22:58

My daughter used to ask me to sing the "Hello Anna" song. Took me a week to twig it was "Hosanna!"

It might well have been me with the teaspoon prayers. My kids still pray that was though it is getting a little babyish for my 8yo dd1. Came from a book I read called "Dear God, Can You Wink?" published by SU. I think it is out of print now but Amazon still seem to have it Here

Written by a missionary mother teaching her little boys to pray in Africa. I though it was great, and a very easy read.

MaryAnnSingleton · 19/09/2008 23:17

I love Hail Holy Queen too - I never knew all the words when I was little but now know it by heart - one of my favourites

MaryAnnSingleton · 19/09/2008 23:20

the bit at the end...'turn then most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us and look not on our sins but on the faith of your Church, Amen' - is that right ?

PotPourri · 19/09/2008 23:21

Cute.
DD2 (age 2) says 'Our Father's ark in heaven'.

MaryBS · 19/09/2008 23:25

Mary Ann

I always remember it as

Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy
Hail our life, our sweetness and our hope
To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve
To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this veil of tears.
Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us, and after this, our exile, show unto us, the blessed fruit of thy womb Jesus
O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary
Pray for Us oh holy Mother of God
That we be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Of course, very controversial, the use of the word Advocate, when Christ is our advocate...

PotPourri · 19/09/2008 23:36

We always said 'this valley of tears'

Countingthegreyhairs · 20/09/2008 09:49

lol WeegieMum, and that's sweet PotPourri

AND I am valued as a woman to preach and teach the gospel message
quite so MaryBS ... more power to your elbow!!

the version of Hail Holy Queen we were taught at school ended on "Pray for Us" ..excluding the last line-and-a- half. Didn't realise there were so many different versions ... either that or age is catching up with me ....

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 20/09/2008 12:38

oh yes, 'Pray for us most Holy Mother of God, that we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

mariagoretti · 23/09/2008 20:31

Sometimes I wonder how we're going to explain these divisions when (please God) we get to knock on the gates 'upstairs'. And how we'll justify insisting on the letter of the law and ignoring its spirit

twinsetandpearls · 23/09/2008 20:35

I spent many a year mumbling hail holy queen hoping not to get caught out.

I love play with our scissors.

TheFallenMadonna · 23/09/2008 20:37

Stick to the Latin

Salve Regina
Mater misericordiae...

BreevandercampLGJ · 23/09/2008 20:44

Not quite in keeping with the last part of this thread...but....

I was taking DS to the school bus the other day, ABBA were on the radio belting out the winner takes it all.

Song finishes.....long pause..

Soooooooooo "the winner takes it all" ....

Not very Christian, is it ??

Countingthegreyhairs · 24/09/2008 11:57

TheFallenMaddona (v appropriate name btw

I miss the Latin so much (showing her age emoticon) the more smells, bells, Palestrina and mystery the better in my view ...

Oh yes indeed Mariagoretti

Twinset

& Bree- that's another good 'un

serin · 24/09/2008 22:35

Countingthegreyhairs · 25/09/2008 07:47

Oooh that's inspired Serin!!

Weegiemum · 26/09/2008 00:33

My little sister used to sing

"Away in a manger, no grit for a bed"
