For no particular reason I feel like sharing my favourite hymns with you all today...I'd be interested to know what yours are, ancient or modern?

In no particular order:

Jesu, Lover of My Soulhere I can't find a tune to share with you though.
Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence here
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (Blaenwen version of the music) here
My Song Is Love Unknown (John Ireland 1918 version) here

I don't know the second on the OPs list but the others are lovely. I know two tunes to My song is love unknown and they are both good.

'For those in peril' always makes me tear up... probably comes of growing up by the sea and hearing the lifeboat maroon on stormy nights.

Having been brought up in a family of musical nonconformists, hymns-round-the-piano and belt them out in church, the loss of hymn singing is my one real regret about now being an atheist.

I used to like the modern 'praise' things and Graham Kendrick and such as a bright young CUer .. you know what, can't remember any of those whereas the good old ones are engraved on my memory forever

Clockface - I'm afraid he's about the level of my regular substitue organist (so pretty good) but not quite up to the standards I want for my DS's Christening (or my funeral for that matter)

I'm not that great myself, but I am particular when it comes to who plays the organ for services that are important for me.

Christ be Our Light (starts 'longing for light we wait in darkness')
Lift High the Cross (because we had it this morning)
St Patrick's Breastplate (all of it, though once when we sang the whole thing I could see members of the congo looking at their watches - I was in the choir and I knew we had just got to the middle!)
Hail Thee Festival Day
Let all Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

and lots more....

Our family funeral hymn is ' Come Ye Thankful People Come' - it always makes me cry

Tell out my Soul. It's become a bit of a family tradition. We had it at our Wedding (along with Let All Mortal Flesh) then my sis had it at her's, we've had it at all the children's baptisms (two of which were on Mothering Sundays) and at my DGrandpapa's funeral. But then I love the Magnificat. Love lots of others too, mostly from NEH as they're generally good settings and the words haven't been messed about.

My favourite hymn is:
God is love let heaven adore him (words by Timothy Rees)

It was sung at the cathedral remembrance service after the Dunblane school shootings, and the second verse especially is very powerful reminding us that God is not untouched and unmoved by human suffering, but actually feels the pain as much as we do.

The second verse is:
God is Love; and love enfoldeth
all the world in one embrace:
with unfailing grasp he holdeth
every child of every race.
And when human hearts are breaking
under sorrow's iron rod,
all the sorrow all the aching
wrings with pain the heart of God.

Definitely Guide me O thou great Jehovah to Cwm Rhondda. And I think Love Divine all loves excelling too.

Shine Jesus Shine always makes me well up too.

Christmas carols - Hark the Herald Angels Sing is my favourite.

And for Easter ones 'Up from the grave he arose, with a mighty triumph o'er his foes' - wonderfully cheery, especially if sung nice and quickly .

I love this one best of all.
The words are simply beautiful.

Modern:

Christ be our light
In Christ alone
As the deer pants
Will you come and follow me

Traddy:
Praise my soul
Hail Redeemer King Divine
At the name of Jesus
Tell out my soul
Oh Lord my God (aka how great thou art)
