For no particular reason I feel like sharing my favourite hymns with you all today...I'd be interested to know what yours are, ancient or modern?

In no particular order:

Jesu, Lover of My Soulhere I can't find a tune to share with you though.
Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence here
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (Blaenwen version of the music) here
My Song Is Love Unknown (John Ireland 1918 version) here

I like stand up stand up for jesus

and one that is not in the church hymnary but we were taught at school...

what a friend we have in Jesus

the one that gets played at every funeral in this family is the the day thou gavest lord is ended

TheProvincialLady · 10/09/2008 14:58

FAQ I am glad to see that "The Lord Is My Shepherd, I Shall Not Want" is not on your not-allowed funeral list. Because it is The Law that it must be sung.

Bronze I had both of those at my wedding too - probably v common but they are fab.

Dear Lord And Father of Mankind I had forgotten on my list but it is one of my favourites too. In fact I sang it to DS to get him to sleep last night (only the first verse with the proper words though, after that it was a bit uummmm...la...still voice...calm"

sorry you misunderstood my post TPL - it's most definitely on my list - I'm not having some mediocre organist playing it at snails pace, which the mourners than drag to a dirge

TheProvincialLady · 10/09/2008 15:03

Bronze I especially love Advent hymns, like O Come O Come Emmanuel

Ah I'm a raving atheist but this thread has made me all nostalgic.

When a knight won his spurs...
There is a green hill far away
Praise my lord the king of heaven

I would love to sing them all now in a big congregation!

Cies · 10/09/2008 15:27

Do some hymns make anyone else cry?

For me, Dear Lord and Father of Mankind makes me weep. And the one that has the music from The Planets. I love them, but they make me weep like a woman posessed.

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

People, Look East (possibly my favourite Christmassy piece)

O God of Earth and Altar

Soul of my Saviour

Weegiemum · 10/09/2008 17:29

Be thou my Vision

It Came Upon the Midnight Clear

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

Thy hand, O God, Has Guided (One Church, One Faith, One Lord)

O Jesus I have Promised

In Christ Alone

Blessed be Your Name

I have loads of favs, but Ive been listening to the Brooklyn tabernacle choir and I love a song called 'I never lost my praise'...I was at praise gathering in Glasgow this year and they sang it, it was really uplifting.

northender · 10/09/2008 19:38

I cry at And Can It Be..... as this has been sung at more than one family funeral. Sung by a chapel packed full of mourning but enthusiastic Methodists it sends a shiver down my spine.

Clockface · 10/09/2008 19:52

"Be thou my vision"...I had it at my confirmation, my wedding and at the dcs' baptisms. So it's kinda followed me through life and efined my faith a bit at times when I've needed definition!

Also "Lord Jesus Christ, you have come to us" - I wonder how you rate this organist FAQ! But it is such a simple, beautiful tune with such beautiful, simple words that come straight from the heart (for me, anyway).

There are loads of others that I love love...far too many to name. One that I realy like is "Come thou fount of every blessing". It's got beautiful, poetic words. nice And also the modern version of "The LOrd's my shepherd" - once more, beautiful simple music, beautiful simple lyrics. Had it at MIL's funeral and it was so soothing.

Oh I could sit and Youtube my favourite hymns all night!

Clockface · 10/09/2008 19:53

this The lord's my shepherd - bliss.

SqueakyPop · 10/09/2008 20:05

My favourite 'hymn' is "How Great Thou Art".

I find it very hard to condense all my favourites into a single one though. Usually, I sing modern praise songs, but I enjoy hymns too, especially those in the Wesley style (ie real belters).

frasersmummy · 10/09/2008 21:12

jesus bids us shine

makes me cry everytime.. it was played at my darling stillborn son's funeral

procrastinatingparent · 10/09/2008 22:02

In Christ Alone
Tell Out my Soul
Be Thou My Vision
How Deep the Father's Love

I think there are some fabulous new hymns (as opposed to songs) being written at the moment.

Icanseethesea · 10/09/2008 22:16

I love In Christ Alone
O Jesus I have Promised
How great the Father's Love
Before the throne of God above

Weegiemum, have just got back from a planning meeting where I requested It came upon a Midnight Clear, cos it is IMO not sung enough!

MoreSpamThanGlam · 10/09/2008 22:17

In Christ alone (thanks so much for that FAQ)
