King Charles is now not Defender of faith

King Charles is now not Defender of the Faith for Church of England Christian -
in the Sovereign Grant Report 2025-26
Where last year’s report described the King as “Head of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith,” this year’s version reads: “His Majesty is Supreme Governor of the Church of England and protects the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation.”

Doesnt seem a great move to me - he has a historical role as King and messing about with that role diminishes it imv - if you can just change things overnight why not change other things like being crowned in a big carry on by the Archbishop of Canterbury - William can just give that a miss and have a chinwag with a few other religious leaders.

Some people on this thread criticising Charles for his infidelity are going to be really surprised when they find out what previous Defenders of the Faith got up to. Not least the shenanigans of the guy to placate whom the C of E was founded...

Loobylooisblue · 25/08/2026 20:36

@Topseyt123 He was forced towards his marriage to Diana. And he was 'wet' enough to let that happen.
Also no-one else was daft enough to have him.
He took one titled lady to a ball then spent all night popping off to dance with Camilla. When said lady walked out on him he was horrified that she dared to do that !
He gave Camilla a bit of a rough ride as well. They dated for a while but them he cleared off on some naval exercise with his ship. Camilla got fed up with waiting and married Andrew Parker-Bowles who had previously been dating Princess Anne.
Both the ladies ^ married their respective husbands in 1973.
Charles didn't marry Diana until 1981 by which time he had proposed to several upper-class ladies who turned him down.

@Dandeloosha "Catholics will be turning bread into the literal body of Christ"

Only a Priest has that authority.

And it's "pallets" if you want to have a bonfire or transport a large item. "Palettes" are what artists use to mix their colours and are tiny.

And what about the "Free Church" and Non-denominational Christians? Don't you think they get a look in ?

HTH

You're comparing apples & pears there.

For hundreds of years nobility/aristocracy married for position, to make alliances, stop wars, gain territory etc
Years ago in upper class circles most rich men had a mistress or two. Once the wife had produced "an heir and a spare", she'd done her duty and was free to take lovers.
It was the 20th Century before the aristocracy married for love like the peasants did.

No problem.
If you want to try satire at least get the names correct.

Um, I think you will find adultery was always a sin in the Christian faith!

But belief is all it is. As is my belief that there is no god and no afterlife. We don't know. Wouldn't life be great if we could all just accept that we believe different things, that none of the things we believe are inherently superior to the things other people believe, and that we should just live and let live?

You tell me these things as if it's some kind of new information to me. It's not.

Christianity isn't 'superior' to other faiths. It provides salvation, eternal life with Christ and as such I'd love others to have that same assurance, just as I do.

True, but somehow some of those with money, power and position got a free pass on that one !

CurlewKate · 25/08/2026 21:08

None of those links suggest anything about him putting Islam above Christianity. They just say that he has an open mind to other philosophies. Or had- in the late 1990s!

Loobylooisblue · 25/08/2026 19:40

@Devonshiregal "He's just some person who randomly won palaces with his genetic lottery."
The Royal Palaces and other estates don't belong to him you know?
Official royal palaces like Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and Kensington Palace belong to the reigning monarch "in right of the Crown".The King holds these properties in trust for the nation and the next monarch. By law, he cannot sell them, lease them, or keep any personal profit from them.

Yes... yet I can't go spend the evening playing snakes and ladders in front of one of any of those wonderful fireplaces he gets to enjoy. Nor ride pricey horses which are stabled on their land. Nor do I get access to the staff that support him when he's making use of them. In fact, if I tried to walk into one of these buildings that apparently he is keeping safe for my country, I would have a gun put in my face and be shoved in jail for the night. So realistically, he lucked out there. I wasn't concerned that he was going to pop them on Rightmove to try and make a few bob.

You don't know that they don't have that assurance, though. That's just what you choose to believe. There's an unpleasant sense of superiority in that.

Nothing I say will change what you think so I'll leave it there.

PenelopePinkerton · 25/08/2026 22:14

There should be a separation of church and state.

@HelenaWilson "Whatever his title, he is a man of deep Christian faith - that has not changed - so he's not less fitted to be head of the CofE."

A pity his so-called 'deep Christian Faith' didn't stop him cheating on his lovely first wife with that old trout he's now married to.

What a very Christian sentiment. Not. Diana would not herself be in the first flush of youth now either.

AgathaDanbury · 25/08/2026 22:22

Very much reminds me of that Ariana Grande/Cynthia Erivo interview.

I’ve an idea… why just not have a king/ RF? There. Problem sorted! 😜

Diana would be 65 if she had lived.

Camilla is 79.

There is a strange thing going on here.

Because Christians usually talk about faith being a choice, nobody is forced into it, freedom of religion and all that.

But when it comes to King Chuck, many Christians appear to think he does not have that freedom of choice. That he somehow has to deeply and completely believe the same as they believe, and that somehow their freedom of religion depends on this guys accident of birth.

It's the in the Bible too really. That somehow Jesus had to be proven to be a descendent of King David.

This God sure does seem pre-occupied with people needing to have pure blood.

Well, the king is not a political leader either, so there’s no inconsistency there.

I would disagree. He is the Head of State!

The Church of England is the established state church, with the British monarch as its Supreme Governor and bishops holding seats in the House of Lords.

Some European countries have moved away from state religions (even quite recently). Norway, Sweden, even Italy.

No.
Camilla IMO is classed as 'old' at 79.
I would describe Di, had she lived, as 'ageing' at 65.

Ageism, also called age discrimination, is when someone treats you unfairly because of your age.

Has Camilla been discriminated against in employment because of her age ? Nope, mainly because she's never had a proper job in her life.

Calling anyone an “old trout” is ageist.

Quote " Nope, mainly because she's never had a proper job in her life."

A surprising thing to see said about a mother on here. But it seems she had the same sort of Jobs as Diana when she was younger.

Camilla Parker Bowles' jobs before becoming future Queen as she edits Country Life - Daily Star

Camilla Parker Bowles was fired from a job before marrying Prince Charles

She started her time with the royals as an underdog surrounded by scandal, but Camilla has since become a beloved member of the family, including by the Queen

I suspect Charles has a rather more esoteric belief system than any of the made up religions like Christianity and Islam. Christianity was a resistance movement Islam a conquest movement. We really need to start teaching these things historically rather than random mutterings about whose right and wrong when the majority of people just happen to have that faith through an accident of birth

Kathleen Raine was basically his spiritual mentor - he knows where it’s at. The exoteric stuff is just political appeasement

Metalmotha · Yesterday 10:18

And yes, Camilla is a much better queen than Diana would have been
