King Charles is now not Defender of faith

King Charles is now not Defender of the Faith for Church of England Christian -
in the Sovereign Grant Report 2025-26
Where last year’s report described the King as “Head of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith,” this year’s version reads: “His Majesty is Supreme Governor of the Church of England and protects the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation.”

Doesnt seem a great move to me - he has a historical role as King and messing about with that role diminishes it imv - if you can just change things overnight why not change other things like being crowned in a big carry on by the Archbishop of Canterbury - William can just give that a miss and have a chinwag with a few other religious leaders.

I've not read all the comments.

My opinion is that this is no surprise, it was hinted by Charles many years ago. Regardless of the title's history, anything that contributes to an acknowledgment that there are many different Christian traditions and other faiths in the UK and Commonwealth (and those of no formal faith or none) is a good thing I think.

Conspiracy theories are everywhere.

That one is right though! Amidst all the crazy things I do believe we are heading for a one world government, as unbelievable as that sounds.

As for JD Vance, clearly he didn't get the memo that we are already in the End Times, and he fancies himself if he thinks he might be actually sending things in that direction.

Can you do a tldr?

What does he think might happen to William?

No I can't and William isn't mentioned.

OneLilacHedgehog · 02/09/2026 12:24

Constitutionally this is a very significant change.

I wonder if all those saying no big deal understands the constitutional significance.

It does fit with Charles more personal beliefs, but I didn't know we changed the constitution in modern times to fit with the current monarchs personal beliefs.

Seems more forward-thinking and very sensible to me. Rather than Defender of the Faith, it becomes inclusive in the protection of faith, in a multicultural and multi-faith country.

He is King of all the citizens of the country, not just the Anglicans.

and not just English Anglicans.

No, it isn't. There is absolutely no constitutional change whatsoever.

OneLilacHedgehog · 02/09/2026 12:49

Yes it is a clear constitutional change. It clearly undermines the legal duty to defend the protestant Christian faith.

I wonder if when William is sworn in as monarch he will change the oath he swears?

Christians have been claiming that the End Times are nigh for as long as there's been Christians. All those other Christians were wrong but I'm sure you're much smarter than they were and you aren't making exactly the same mistakes they did.

Isn't it rather necessary to think about William?

To be fair, the current American administration is doing more than most to hurry along the end times.

Time will tell. That's all anyone can say.

The end times are not coming...and yet in some ways they have always been here in some part of the world.

Yup. Even Jesus himself got it wrong.

Mat 16:28 Truly I say to you, there are certain of those standing here who will not taste of death until they may see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom." (LSV)

Unless there are 2000 year old Apostles still wandering about of course. But that would likely make the news.

Why does the monarch have to be a Christian - the majority of the population aren’t. We don’t know which, if any of the royals have any religious beliefs.

OneLilacHedgehog · 02/09/2026 13:24

No reason, except constitutionally. We could just disestablish the church of England and reduce the constitutional significance of the monarch. This could be a first step towards this.

That’s forcing the monarch to be a member of the Church of England - they should have free will to belong to any religion or non at all - same as everyone else.

They will only ever come if that’s something you believe in. The rest of us will carry on quite happily.

It's a strange set up I will agree. But constitutionally the monarch has to be a protestant Christian in line with the church of England.

Yup. Time proved all those millions and millions of other Christians, saying exactly the same as you, wrong. Absolutely wrong.

But I'm sure this time it'll be different and we'll be up to our necks in scorpion-tailed horse locusts any minute now.

You believe something will happen but you have no evidence or proof or even when it is meant to happen. I don’t celebrate Easter but it happens to believers. I don’t celebrate the Bible - nothing in it will happen to me.

This will be a bit more major than Easter! Either we all experience it, or none of us do.

So that is none of us then. Not even the King. Head of Church or not head of Church.
