King Charles is now not Defender of faith

King Charles is now not Defender of the Faith for Church of England Christian -
in the Sovereign Grant Report 2025-26
Where last year’s report described the King as “Head of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith,” this year’s version reads: “His Majesty is Supreme Governor of the Church of England and protects the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation.”

Doesnt seem a great move to me - he has a historical role as King and messing about with that role diminishes it imv - if you can just change things overnight why not change other things like being crowned in a big carry on by the Archbishop of Canterbury - William can just give that a miss and have a chinwag with a few other religious leaders.

You're getting very irate about all this. I wonder why?

Not at all. I'm not the one calling people names and telling them how to behave, because I'm not nasty like that.

Again your lack of Latin let's you down. "Irate" from "Ire" = Latin anger. It's not applicable here, so maybe you should do some more research as your other languages don't seem help you much.

My "strawman argument" as you call it, was quite logical, it's a shame you couldn't follow it.

I've avoided you on the Philosophy and Religion board because I can. IMO its pity you have wandered over here and I have to hide the thread (with some good input) because of your puerile contributions.

Edited

Logic is useless when the premise is false.

And maybe you're not irate, so please do tell me what the Latin is for 'tetchy'?

Anyway, while my first preference would be not to have a monarch as head of a state religion (and indeed would be to not have a monarch at all), the fact of the matter is that we live in a multifaith society, and as monarch, King Charles has a duty of care over all of us, not just those some consider the 'right' kind of Christian.

There is nothing puerile about pointing out that belief is not knowledge, and that all we have is belief. It's a simple statement of fact.

Seems more forward-thinking and very sensible to me. Rather than Defender of the Faith, it becomes inclusive in the protection of faith, in a multicultural and multi-faith country.

He is King of all the citizens of the country, not just the Anglicans.

I agree with this.

But when the teacher of religious science got threatened out of the school with death threats Charles would be on the side of the Muslims threatening to kill him? Or the anti Israeli marches -whose side there? which faith does he protect - or terrorists bomb in Allahs name ?
it seems ludicrous he would defend homophobia ,anti abortion which goes against British laws
A naive move on his part imv

Quote " ....Charles would be on the side of...."

Evidence for this would be good to see.

You're being disingenuous. Unless of course you really think all Muslims are the same, hold the same views, agree with terrorism, agree with hounding teachers. Either you don't know many Muslims or you're deliberately stoking division here.

Do you know which other faiths have lots of homophobia? Christianity and Judaism. And anti-abortion sentiment is also the preserve of Christians. The problem is faith, not one particular faith. But I reckon you know that.

There's none. OP has shown their true colours. Just another Islam bashing poster - yawn.

MargoLivebetter · 28/08/2026 08:22

@Smokeywater given that previous King's happily chopped off the heads or hung their fellow Christians, not to mention oversaw laws to disempower them, seize their lands etc, I can't help wondering why you are so anxious about what "side" our current King would take - given he is highly unlikely to take any "public side" at all.

Extremism in any faith is generally abhorred by the leaders of that faith, and condemned when it arises. It occurs in Christianity and Judaism as well as Islam. It is also illegal.

We could expand on the short version of the Defender of Faith - defend the right of all citizens to peacefully practice their own faith or none. The right to have a faith of your own choosing, or none at all, is important in a democratic society. We have that here.

But you seem determined to read this as something else. That speaks of your own prejudices and not to the reality of the matter.

I agree we should be proud of our heritage and traditions. I did like Queen Elizabeth a true monarch

Defender of the 1948 UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights would be pretty good. I don't see how anyone could object to that. Apart from Reform and Restore voters of course. They would find fault.

1948 is also the year Chuck was born. So even more apt that he named as defender of that. Both born in the same year.

You’re assuming the King is a believer of the Christian faith? The majority of the UK population aren’t.

Aren't they all true monarchs, anointed by God? Isn't that what true monarchists believe?

OneBusyFinch · 28/08/2026 10:43

Why then, did he get anointed in that bloody expensive coronation?

The act of anointing is often used by Christians as a symbol of God’s grace. In the Bible anointing is seen as a sign that someone has been set apart for a special calling or purpose.

do we honestly still believe in this day and age that he and the rest of his heirs have a ‘special calling or purpose’???

as other posters have pointed out, I don’t see much Christianity in how he treated Diana and how he responded to the sexual abuse claims to his brother from Virginia Guiffre - they have never apologised instead they clubbed together to pay her off. Also in the dreadful case of poor Neil Todd - if anyone wants to know more it’s here .They are still hoping that we will forget and focus on the smoke and mirrors PR they relentlessly churn out

'Yes, it’s only Islam as they are not integrating in areas in Britain and are following their own laws'

The same could be said for orthodox Jews.

This is not true. There are a tiny minority of very religious Jews who this may apply to but most Orthodox Jews (who keep Shabbat/kosher etc) integrate in to British society.

Lentilcakes · 28/08/2026 11:18

In the weekly synagogue service, yes in orthodox synagogues (United synagogue) too, there is a prayer for the royal family.

Parker231 · 31/08/2026 17:53

Why does it matter what religion he is or isn’t? It’s a figurehead position and has no powers.

Compared to what other heads of state are currently up to - Trump, Putin, Khameni etc - then a very minor shift towards inclusivity from the British crown won't shift the needle even slightly.

As a Scottish person (Protestant), I think to declare oneself as " Defender of the faith", or variations of that, is someone "losing the plot".

"The Church of Scotland is a Presbyterian church and recognises only Jesus Christ as 'King and Head of the Church'."

Source for that quote

King Charles vows to protect the security of the Church of Scotland | The Church of Scotland

Catholics have the Pope of course, and other Churches can do as they like.

And have a look here, countries with State religions

RELIGION 2000 2025
Christianity 13 countries 7 countries*
Islam 27 countries 19 countries
Buddhism 2 countries 4 countries

Finland and Argentina have church relationships but no official status*

And consider also, that the King has no theological training. He has never had to study religion, pass exams on it, and yet he is Head of The Church of England.

And as you seem to be anti Islam, have a look at the above re countries with a state religion. If any world leaders do a state visit from a country with a state religion, they are likely to be Islamic countries.

Islam is the official religion in 19 countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Morocco. Christianity in 7 nations (England, Denmark, Greece, Malta). Buddhism in Thailand, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Bhutan. Judaism in Israel.

Well, at least King Chuck is not coming out with what US VP JD Vance is saying

While I wouldn’t be shocked if we are living in the end times, what I’m trying to focus on is doing as much of God’s work as possible right now, and if that leads to the end times, OK, and if that leads to, you know, us building a better world that thrives and survives for a very long time after I’m gone, that’s great, too.”

If he was, I would be wanting to keep him away from any nuke launch codes.
