Who else is going to be celebrating Passover?

My dad's side of the family are (fairly lapsed) Jewish, but still have a Seder every year. I'm an atheist but have such strong and happy memories of Pesach from childhood - the whole family being there, the food, the feeling of being part of a community etc etc.

I always take dd (5) along, its part of her heritage and I want her to have the experience - I think traditions really help to give children to find their way and place in the world, to give them a solid foundation to grow from.

We have been out and bought matzos - she was not too sure about them but I'm going to do matzo brei which surely will convince anyone of their merits?

Me We're jewish albeit liberal but happy! We only celebrate 1 night round at mum &dads usually with a few stragglers This year though we're also doing 2nd night here coz we've got DS saxophone teacher & partner coming. He's lapsed & she's not Jewish...

scottishmummy · 14/04/2008 20:04

my good friend celebrates passover and brings goodies into work for us - love it

lulumama · 14/04/2008 20:06

DH is an atheist, so just me with my matzoh, DS will join in as will DD, but i will be forgoing cheese toasties for 8 days

SueBaroo · 14/04/2008 20:07

lulumama · 14/04/2008 20:14

i like the maror, grated, on matzoh

seder at mum & dad;s on sunday, not going first night. will be seeing rubyslippers and her family at mums ! wooo hooooooo!

i quite like matzoh.

stripeymama · 14/04/2008 20:18

Mmmmmm indeed... was trying to describe it to bf the other day and the best i could come up with was "sweet alcoholic hummus"

Our family only do first night these days - my grandma was the one who did it all really and she died a few years ago. Normally my grandad goes to see family in Israel for Pesach but he is old and unwell so we are doing it 'properly' for him this year.

that sounds lovely, stripey. this will be our first seder without my grandma, she is very poorly, and in a home . but lots of good memories of seder.

trying to teach dyslexic DS the first verse of manishtana (sp?)

stripeymama · 14/04/2008 20:25

Ha - I have been trying to teach dd that today as she will be the youngest child there.

No go - she has a thing about 'performing'!

Had more luck with Chad Gadya as she knows the story of The House that Jack Built. Not sure if that one's traditional for Pesach or just a family tradition though?

stripeymama · 14/04/2008 21:15

That's lovely stripeymama. Mmmm eggs in saltwater and we say every year why don't we have this more often!! And M&D end by saying 'next year in Jerusalem'they've never been to Israel! LOL

lulumama · 15/04/2008 10:54

me too ! egg in saltwater.... should be boaktastic, actually quite nice

RubySlippers · 15/04/2008 10:57

we will be celebrating too

i have posted a couple of recipes too including my cinnamon balls (yum)

i still cannot get to grips with egg in saltwater

Sugarmagnolia · 17/04/2008 15:39

So am I the only insane one then who has turned my entire kitchen upsidedown to change every flipping dish and pot and pan in the place? I probably am. It's totally crazy and i don't know why I put myself through it every year.

Having said that I have such fond memories of Pesach as a child - I just never realised how much hard work it was until I had my own house. So today - changing the kitchen over. Tomorrow - cooking. Grandma does the chicken soup and MIL makes the charosets but I've got a lamb stew to cook, a potato kugel and those life-saving pesach muffins that keep my children from starving every year. First seder here for 9 of us then 2nd night at MILs.

Once it starts I quite like it but I might be a total wreck by then.

4yo DS knows the first question and 7yo DD will sing the rest but then they do go to a Jewish school so they know more than I do.

Off to have a look at the recipes page.

RubySlippers · 17/04/2008 15:41

SM - you use paper plates! Not environementally friendly but less work

i admire your dedication - i would take the lazy option

Sugarmagnolia · 17/04/2008 15:43

Nope, can't do it. don't know why I just can't.

I also can't find the recipe thread.

RubySlippers · 17/04/2008 15:46

recipe thread here

TBH, part of the pleasure of Passover was using my mum's lovely old china - i am sorry i don't have that

my cinnamon balls always tasted a lot better eaten off a 1950's pyrex plate

Sugarmagnolia · 17/04/2008 21:07

I don't do baking for Pesach but fortunately DH's grandma does. She provides the cinnamon balls, almond biscuits & coconut biscuits. Have done my bit for the recipe page though - I'm good with kugels!

malfoy · 17/04/2008 23:38

we are also celebrating.

2 seders at home.

no china changeover though.

my husband is doing all the cooking.

Sugarmagnolia · 18/04/2008 07:41

am jealous malfoy about the dishes and about the DH who cooks! (although I know the dishes are self-inflicted)

It's weird because I grew up in the states in a Reform/Conservative home but we ALWAYS changed every dish, spoon, pot, pan etc and I still do. But I have friends who won't drive on Shabbat and don't bother with the dishes. I don't really get it.

Happy Sedering Everyone!

malfoy · 18/04/2008 22:24

shabbat shalom to all!

ImightbeLulumama · 24/04/2008 20:30

anyone else really bored of matzoh yet ?

malfoy · 24/04/2008 20:39

yip! I was working today & could not be bothered to find alternative food so ate plain matzoh with water all day.

have decided we will have special different china next year.

ImightbeLulumama · 24/04/2008 20:48

ooh, how dusty !

i find a bit of tomato puree and grated cheese melted on the matzoh is lovely.. 30 secs in the micro
