Why? - aren’t those purposes just roles in relation to others. They’re not specific to you?

It’s my purpose

What would you define as an acceptable purpose in life?

Everyone is going to have a different one.

Lalupalina · 03/04/2024 10:58

That would imply that all living organisms found on earth, including viruses, bacteria and other pathogens are all here 'for a reason'?

@Kdtym10 you've not responded to my point above and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

Yes I agree 100% everyone’s purpose is different, I was trying to ascertain what separated those generic roles were specific to @Parker231.

There is no such thing as an “acceptable purposes” there is just purpose! But I also all of those things @Parker231 mentioned. But if I wasn’t there to fulfil those roles my DH would most likely have married someone else, my parents would have had another child etc, That is, unless there was a reason for me specially filling those roles.

So is this an active belief, ie it arose from a source, or the absence of a belief, ie it is an original state of being that has not been created eg by weighing up evidence - as I said an important distinction

I'm sure you disagree but I don't think anybody is born believing in gods. Many people are taught to believe. I was not taught there are gods, and I have not seen any proof/evidence that would convince me there are. So I guess it's both.

I’m sorry, but not thinking the same as your childhood family and friends are and your type of schooling does not prove you “learned to think for yourself”. Who do you think like now? You can move from one person shaping your thoughts to another. Sometimes we are simply rejecting something, quite often we combine that with absorbing what is expected of us by another group, which can be another group of friends, a partner or society at large. Very few adults in history have actually truly thought for themselves. The ones that have done are generally labelled mad.

As I said I think the only people who do truly think for themselves are children - we don’t grow up, we constrict.

Repeatedly rejecting and questioning my perspective on my own experience seemed very dismissive to me. You didn't use the words "you're wrong" but that is how I took the whole exchange and the "I'm sorry ... does not prove", etc. when I'm speaking of my own experience.

I think you will find that has happened to everyone on this thread. ?me included) it is the nature of debate.

Cab you please illustrate how I “dismissed your experiences”

How you take my comments is up to you. Maybe you shouldn’t tell people what they mean by their comments and consider why you are interpreting them that way

I’m not looking for any other purpose - I have what I want from life. Can’t think of anything which would improve it.

I tend to think that a belief in eternal life after death would make our current mortal existence pretty much meaningless. When you're two billion years into the afterlife would you even remember your time on earth? It'd be less than the blink of the eye by comparison.

I think, philosophically speaking, eternity exists outside of time and space )and so does God) therefore, the length of time on this planet is meaningless/ it is what we do with it

OP posts:
HowardTJMoon · 03/04/2024 12:34

I don't understand what "outside of time and space" actually means or what existence in that state would be like. Do you experience everything simultaneously? No time for reflection or comprehension, just an instantaneous onslaught of sensation, emotion and information?

Well all those concepts are related to time and space, but in essence yes, although without time and space there would be nothing else so it wouldn’t be overwhelming

@Kdtym10 So do you think that ALL species of ALL living organisms were put on earth by some divine force with a purpose?

I suppose you don't believe in evolution then?

Well I was explaining what I believe, you asked me how it would work so I explained my thought process! It’s usually how these things go.

I was wondering if this is a viewpoint that you came up with yourself or if it's based on something.

Lalupalina · 03/04/2024 13:51

Yes I do believe that. Why do you suppose I don’t believe in evolution?

That was a question obviously - but as you didn't understand I'll ask it again: Do you believe in evolution?

It’s probably an amalgamation of different things or just internal knowledge. Or something else entirely. Where do you think it came from ? Where does any knowledge come from
