Raven at my window

Booklover3 · 20/12/2021 14:01

A Raven just tried to land on my window sill at work. Looked me straight in the eye and flapped about a lot.

Can’t say I’m feeling very happy about that.

Are they always a bad omen?

Might have been a crow… can’t honestly tell the difference

I had a pet raven growing up. They are very smart birds I'd be pleased to have one visit me

AuntMasha · 20/12/2021 14:17

I’d be pleased to see a raven. They’re birds of wisdom as far as I’m concerned.

haba · 20/12/2021 14:20

Ravens are huge!
More likely a crow or rook tbh.
Corvids are all such amazing, intelligent creatures- it's a real pleasure to see them, and it always makes me happy inside when I do so.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 20/12/2021 14:21

If it could have been a crow it probably was, ravens are bigger and rarer. Neither is an omen of anything, both are pretty cool.

simonthedog · 20/12/2021 14:23

Yes Ravens are much much bigger than Crows

HellonHeels · 20/12/2021 14:31

It would probably like you to give it some cheese or other tasty treat.

I love corvids.

crazyjinglist · 20/12/2021 14:48

Ravens are pretty massive, and they mostly live in hilly fairly rural areas. Unless you live somewhere like that, I expect it was a crow or a rook. In any case, ravens aren't omens, they are just birds! Seems a bit of a leap to be unhappy about it and think it's abad omen when you don't even know if it's a raven anyway Grin.

Booklover3 · 20/12/2021 16:54

I didn’t know as it didn’t make a sound. It’s been back in the tree outside the window cawing… pretty sure it’s a crow now I've heard it. Sitting on a branch looking into the office!

To be fair I don’t think (according to superstition) either is a good sign.

No cheese or nibbles to give it unfortunately. Im not normally so silly but it’s given me the Wobblies

It probably wanted to complain about something, they are very judgy birds.

Meowwwwwww · 20/12/2021 23:00

How is this related to philosophy?

crazyjinglist · 21/12/2021 11:35

It's lucky that superstition is just superstition (i.e. a load of codswallop) then!

glimpsing · 21/12/2021 12:54

Corvids are lovely and very intelligent. They have been known to give gifts, have funerals, form friendships with humans.

The superstition arises from corvids taking advantage of the carrion on battle fields. But in nature, this is useful as it clears refuse.

CoverYourselfInChocolateGlory · 21/12/2021 13:13

Depends whether it kept repeating "Nevermore". If it didn't, you're probably ok.

It’s religion and philosophy. I did wonder if a practicing witch might be able to shed some light about it all.

I know it’s a superstition. I know they are silly… but it did scare the life out of me just appearing like that, looking me squarely in the eye and flapping its wings madly!

I’m not feeling as irrational today. I’m blaming my hormones and the fact that I worked very hard yesterday Blush

I came home to 3 in my house - they 'fell' through the chimney, my mum saw this as a sign I was pregnant, she was correct.

GerundTheBehemoth · 22/12/2021 02:33

It's just a wild animal going about its day. No more of an omen than if a centipede crossed your path.

Fatarseflanagan09 · 22/12/2021 02:36

I wish a raven would visit me, they’re wise and funny and really clever, when I was little a hundred years ago some of the lads in the village had pet magpies.

How lovely op, you have been chosen. When I was a little girl, a crow made friends with me. It used to tap and caw at my bedroom window until I went outside to play with it. I used to feed it cherries and bits of dog food and it used to sit on my arm like a pirate’s parrot. It was the most intelligent bird I’ve ever seen. I used to play tricks on it to hide the cherries etc, it always could figure them out. Loved that bird.

OhamIreally · 22/12/2021 09:58

The Spanish use the same word for crow and raven. That always made me a bit sad for some reason.
I found that out at the Tower of London when explaining to a Spanish friend about England falling if the ravens ever leave the tower.

According to the BTO Birdfacts pages, raven is cuervo grande in Spanish, and carrion crow is corneja negra.

It's perceived as bad luck in some countries because the Vikings used them to find land. Then you'd get ransacked. But Odin had two which were his information gatherers. They are perceived as good luck in Nordic countries.

That's wonderful.

My DD was at uni a few years back and also befriended a carrion crow. She was on the 4th floor and it used to sit on her windowsill and stare in at her. She used to leave treats on the window sill for it and one day it flew right in an gave her a hair scrunchie that it had clearly nicked from another student.Grin
