Or Wiccans. or Pagans? Or anyone who is interested in a magical path or feels some magical stirrings.

A place for support, learning, swapping ideas and magical inspiration.

@Nonamesavail

You do not need to be part of a group to be a witch.
If this relates to my post about joining a group, I may not have explained properly. You absolutely don't need to join a group to be a witch (most of us on this thread are solitary witches)

My post was in response to an earlier poster who said they were frightened of spirits. I would always advise anyone who wants to explore working with spirits to do so with someone who's knows what they're doing. I've found that spiritual circles can be a safe and friendly place for beginners to learn.

Omgyouatetheprincess · 20/10/2020 23:02

@VioletCharlotte

Thank you & sorry for delayed reply, have had a hectic day! Also have lockdown looking on Friday so things are especially busy.

With regards to your spiritual work, do you ‘see’ the spirits in your mind or do you feel them so to speak?

I have spent the most hectic of days really trying to understand my inner fear and where it’s coming from and almost just like a switch I’ve turned it off. I think it’s the fear of the unknown and not wanting to do anything that could cause harm to my family, but with learning and understanding I think it’s manageable, it does and has always excited me, I’ve seen the magic in everything from an early age. There’s just been a number of rolling things over the years that’s finally twigged me into being serious about it, almost as if it was a calling?

@madcatladyforever

Thank you!

“That first step into the unknown is always the hardest - it's a step into the dark in an unfamiliar and strange terrain.“ this completely resonates with me, and i feel it’s where fear meets excitement.

Was there anything in particular that turned you away from being in a coven or did you just prefer to go it alone?

I know no one around me who’s into this at the moment, I think it’s still met with a bit of a scoff.

sweetkitty · 20/10/2020 23:12

Interesting following these discussions as a beginners.

I took my quartz and obsidian in my pocket to work today, I had a meeting where I kind of got demoted after a sort of standing up and saying a situation was stressful and for taking some time off so it kind of has back fired on me. But in these times I’ll still get paid the same and my job is very safe and we don’t actually need me working to pay the bills, my job pays for our holidays and luxuries so for that I am very very grateful.

I will continue down by self healing path both mentally and physically and I’m taking responsibility for my own health and that feels good. Must make time for yoga and meditation though and not let it fall by the wayside.

Oh the dog came through her op fine and is on the mend. I have a lot of pets mostly rescues, I love having animals around me, they soothe my soul.

Nightly blessing to you all

speakout · 21/10/2020 07:14

Good morning- it's a wild and windy one today. Work is a heavy load right now, and I need craft supplies, just wondering if I have enough to finish my tasks today or if I have to make an early trip out in the stormy weather.
Mercury continues a retrograde path, raking up old coals and scraping over old scars in its path, but as the moon moves into Capricorn today we will see some harmony and structure restored- at least for a short while.
Just off for a sweet orange spa shower before some yoga. I also feel the need to load up with obsidian today. There is a great deal of anxiety and worry at large in society right now, and easy to become overwhelmed and absorb those energies, especially if out and about or listening to news channels.
Prioritising self care becomes even more important when things get tough- whatever that means to you.
I know some of our members are struggling at the moment, self care is always an antidote, whether that means putting coconut oil on dry skin, speaking our mind, finding a cheaper fuel tariff, cutting someone out of our lives, or having a spa shower. For me today some gentle nurturing and protection is in order. I hope you find some way of blessing your own self today.

Good morning. I’m an part time lurker but just found this online and wondered if it would be a good way to increase my knowledge and start to practise. What do you think? (Apologies for the long link.)🤦🏻‍♀️

BabiaMajora a warm welcome, glad you have some to sit with us.

The course looks interesting, but I am a naturally cynical person. Many many people and organisations want to part us from our money, and the pagan world is no exception.

You may enjoy the structure of the course and feel that some accreditation gives you satisfaction, but I don't think there is anything on the course tat you couldn't learn yourself with some self directed study( and learn a lot more besides)
If it appeals then do some research, it wouldn't be my cup of tea, but each path is unique.

Nonamesavail · 21/10/2020 09:17

I wouldn't pay for one either. There is so much you can do for free. Have a look at a lisa lister book called witch..

I've woken up with a sinking feeling today:(

Me too.

Runningdownthathill · 21/10/2020 10:15

I had been thinking about doing an online course for £100, but feel dubious about it too.
It’s hard to know where to start, and I feel I need some guidance to start off with. I will read some of the books recommended.
I have also woken with a sinking feeling.
Mercury is retrograde and already the conflicts and arguments are starting. I feel quite beleaguered.

speakout · 21/10/2020 10:31

Where we start on a magical path is a personal thing, the direction, speed are entirely up to us. I think this is a big part of the journey.

Rather than ne told we have to read certain books or study certain esoteric subjects, follow your heart and move in a direction that interests or excites.
Runningdownthathill you talk of astrology- that would be a good place to start, learning about planets, what the signs , houses and aspects mean, there are lots of resources to calculature and interpret your natal chart online.

Equally someone may have given you a Tarot deck, or you buy some essential oils, or curious about ancient religions, and that piques an interest. Charity shops are often good places to find that book that has been laid in your path.
And you will probably find that as you move along your journey some interests will be laid down for a time, while you pick up an interest in another subject, but then like a spiral we will often revisit and integrate subjects as we travel.

There is no prescription, you decide how - or even if- you want to progress, and if anyone tells you there is a "right way"- they are wrong!!

There is no "right

@BabiaMajora I wouldnt pay for a course. I spend alot of time in nature. I go to the woods and pick a tree to hug. I ask it to please send my negative energy down its roots, into the ground. After a while I start to feel better and thank the tree. Meditation is great. Listen to how you feel, if you feel like sending good energy/hugging a tree/using oils/feeling your tarot set then do it.

BlankTimes · 21/10/2020 11:09

A lot of the mercury retrograde things just have to be evaluated. If you can't choose to ignore them, or choose to get around them, then they just have to be endured. It's not fun but if you learn something along the way, even if that something is that you have the strength to get through yet another thing which causes you the ultimate frustration and eats into your time to sort it all out, then it's something else you've achieved.

How to avoid posting long links copy the link into your message, then delete everything backwards from the end to the questionmark.
Then post it. as long as you leave the questionmark in, the link will work.
That saves everyone who clicks on it having yet more tracking cookies and unwanted stuff on their device.
OR
If you see a long link, paste it into your browser bar and delete everything from the end to the question mark, then click enter. It's just easier for everyone if long links are not posted to start with. No thanks to me for this info, another poster told me about it a couple of years ago.

Warm welcome to BabaMajora I'd not do paid-for course either.

Running you said It’s hard to know where to start, and I feel I need some guidance to start off with
Trust your own instincts, what attracts you, try that. if you don't like it, re-evaluate and try something else.

Your post was lovely to read first thing this morning, it made me feel very secure and grounded. Wise words about self care. I've set my work team a 30day self care challenge. I've had lots of comments about being 'too busy for all that right now!' I'm trying to gently explain to them that this is the time they need to prioritise self care!

@BabiaMajora I wouldn't pay a lot of money for a course. Centre of Excellence courses give you an overview, but they don't go into any depth. I did a herbalism one a while back, but only paid £19. They often have special offers, I wouldn't pay more than that.

@Runningdownthathill Mercury Retrograde is talked about a lot, but it's not something to be fearful of, it's a time for going within. Be mindful about how you communicate so as to avoid conflict. Stay in the present, use the time wisely to finish off things you've already started and review your progress. It's not a time for new initiatives or opportunities.

VioletCharlotte · 21/10/2020 11:19

BrightYellowDaffodil · 21/10/2020 11:24

Like @Beautiful3 I wouldn't pay for a course either. I think it's important to find our own path - for example, I started off on a Wiccan path but I found it didn't really sit right with me, it was too structured. I found that hedge/garden/folk witchery felt much more 'me'. If later on you find like minds then so much to the good! That's not to say that you shouldn't interact with others but being steered onto a specific course before you've found your feet perhaps isn't the best way.

I think witches can practice in many ways, and I think that we all have abilities. Some of us just want to heal and spread love, others may want to take their craft very seriously, using ceremonal magick or follow occult paths. All are valid paths in my book.

I completely agree with this. I'm sure that, compared to some, I'm not 'much' of a witch - it's part of my life, alongside with other things, and I bumble along marking the sabbats and cycles of nature as I experience them within my life.

One of the reasons I don't often talk about being a witch to others is that I mentioned it to someone once and their response was along the lines "What makes you think you're a witch? You weren't born into it and you don't take part in ceremonies/covens." Put me right off talking about it again if to some you're too much of a witch (by being one at all) and to others you're not enough! :)

VioletCharlotte · 21/10/2020 11:27

@Omgyouatetheprincess

My strongest senses are clairsentience (feeling) and claircognizance (knowing)

I feel the emotions of spirits inside me and I'm very sensitive to energy. I also pick up on smells (so for example, if I suddenly get a strong smell of tobacco, this tells me the spirit was a smoker)
I'll often 'just know' something, a thought or idea will pop into my head and I'll know it's correct.

I've learned that the other senses (clairvoyance - seeing and clairaudience - hearing) are likely to develop over time as I become more experienced. I've not experienced either yet though.

speakout · 21/10/2020 17:25

VioletCharlotte thank you for our kind words- and what a lovely thing to do with your work team. I think Molly Roberts did a similer thing on youtube- 28 days of beauty..

I have strong senses too- clairsentience and clairaudience.
I often walk around the oldest parts of my town, broken down building from hundreds of years ago and listen to the daily life- children chattering, women crying, loud vouces, singinging sometimes. Ocassionally I hear distressing things too, people cryig, screaming or wailing.

Working with spirits is not my thing however, I find the complexities of working with the living enough of a challenge!

Wow - so many responses - it’s so lovely to meet you all. Speakout I’m quite cynical about these things myself but it would be useful to have a guide for different rituals/areas I’ve not really considered before. I’ll look for that book Nonamesavail - thanks for the recommendation.
Beautiful3 I feel much the same, very much drawn to nature and meditation. It’s good to know that I’m on the right path!
Thank you BlankTimes - I knew the link was too long but I didn’t know where to trim it so it still worked!
VioletCharlotte I am very sensitive to whatever the mood in the room is - is this related to what you experience (in a very basic way)?
Thanks again for the nice warm welcome. Smile

HillsBesideTheSea · 21/10/2020 22:17

Another one that woke up with a sense of dread - actually multiple times in the night. The day was hard and eventful, a bombshell was dropped yesterday (not unexpected and not completely unwelcome - just been officially asked to take on proper caring duties for my parents rather than the unofficial half wanted half not wanted thing that was happening due to welfare need) and i am feeling very out of sorts. Self care really is needed and is something i need to put more priority on (simple things like not eating breakfast at 7pm at night as the first meal of the day when i have been up since 7am)

I dislike halloween as the atmosphere almost feels oppressive and heavy like it is clammering for more attention then i am willing, able or it is wise to give it. I find that it is a time for self care and protection work primarily.

I wouldn't enrole in a course. There are some good herbalism courses that are very detailed but you have to be very very very very careful and you are more likely to find an overview than an indepth and detailed course.
I agree start with what interests you and learn by following that path.

I started with visualisation and some very basic cleasning and protection work because it was what was needed. I tend to be scattered and that makes for bad mannifestations so i know that my basics need to be strong, i keep revisiting and most work i do is through grounding and shielding. I struggle with spirits and chose to not work with them for this reason, the results would be too unpredictable so it would be unwise.

The way i view magic as it is like driving.
Not every one is going to have the same experience taking the same road, not everyone is meant to take the same road
You wouldn't expect to start with a massive articulated lorry (high level), you would start with basics and hopefully perfect this and for most people this (lower level) is something that is perfect for their needs. Those that find they need the skills and expertise for driving a articulated lorry would then go on to develop those skills (high level magic) and apply this knowledge to their lives where it is appropriate.
Not using higher level magic does not make you less of a witch, and in some cases the witch is more powerful because the lower level magic that is practised and used has most relevance to their lives and circumstances and it is really perfected.

I have seen many beginner witch want to dive into the higher level stuff and it not work because they don't have the basics, or have results that teach them hard lessons; simply because they think that if you are not practising higher level magic it makes you less skilled.

HillsBesideTheSea · 21/10/2020 22:24

violetCharlotte it was my experience with all 4 of those that brought me to this thread. I needed to make it STOP. It was totally overwhelming me and very unpleasant. And i am very grateful to the wise word from these wise witches who help me get back control of my life and my abilities in this area. Huge difference was made to me. I skill have these skills but i can tune them down when needed now.

HillsBesideTheSea · 21/10/2020 22:30

BrightYellowDaffodil I follow a similar style of magic to you. it is what feels most right.

"I'm sure that, compared to some, I'm not 'much' of a witch - it's part of my life, alongside with other things, and I bumble along marking the sabbats and cycles of nature as I experience them within my life." my illuminating realisation was that the more formalised celebrations of the sabbats were actually more modern in nature and that more traditional forms would tame less formalise forms like corn dollies, yule logs and attunement to nature and seasons passing. And for me that is what feels most right. It is not to say that the formalised celebrations that are more elaborate are wrong, it is just that they are not the only way to celebrate and that both ways are valid and it is the witch that can chose this to suit their specific situation and belief - especially if one is not in a more formalise coven.
Before this i always felt less of a witch or like i was wrong because the formalised approach just seemed so unnatural to me.

speakout · 22/10/2020 07:32

Some wise words here.

Ultimately no one has the authority to tell you whether you are a witch or not.
I am sparing with the information though, I choose carefully the people that I tell. I know that some of that information may illicit fear or scorn, and so far it has landed well.
Some of my closest family don't know, but my OHs family celebrate who I am, and my closest friends support me too.
I do have some secrets and unfortunatley have to be cmplicit in lies which is sad, but that is to protect others.

I hopee everyones path is a gentle one today.

@HillsBesideTheSea that's so interesting how you feel regarding Halloween. Most people love it. Myself and the children don't like it, it feels dark and of a low level energy. We don't celebrate it any more.

sweetkitty · 22/10/2020 23:20

Evening everyone I’m still in a horrid place work wise. It takes everything to get up and go there, still it’s almost the weekend when I’ll hopefully be able to destress and have some self care.

I love Halloween always have, I wish we celebrated like they do in Mexico Day of the Dead. We carve pumpkins and I make pumpkin soup, they’ll be no trick or treating this year but we will plan some fun and games and I’ll sneak off for a bit to have some quiet time in the full moon.
