deeja - i'll try and dig it out tonight but isasmum's method sounds the easiest, for a beginners guide. My MIL who's a great cook, makes it from scratch - takes her 2 hrs- but its soo delicious.

Oh Isasmum - save me some dahi puri!

This year, as I'm pregnant, going to try and cook as much as I can at the weekend and freeze it for it to be eaten during the week for DH. Saves all the hassel of rushing around when I come back from work and ensuring that food is ready on time.

Dh has requested lasagne so will be making that for him tonight......I'm not fasting until AF out the way....not sure how I'm going to do it when AF finished - DS is into everything and I'm constantly running around after him and I get sooooooo thirsty....

Whose husband was a chef?? Swop??!! lol!!!

Salaam to everyone, im not fasting this year as am pregnant with terrible sickness so am feeling a bit left out!!! Dd had me up at 6.30, so i thought i would start cooking really early and get it over and done with but all the onions i had apart from one looked lovely till you cut them and then were rotten inside. So this morning i made pakoras and under salaan (scramled egg curry) as the eggs broke on the way home from asda yesterday for tomorrow morning, and aloo paratha (buttered chappatis stuffed with potatoe) for lunch. But as i had already defrosted meat before i cut open the onions i have to go and cook shami kebabs and aubergine and meat salaan.

Hopefully i can just make falooda tomorrow as it will all be set and if i freeze the kebabs i can take out a few at a time. I love haleem, my sil makes it from scratch but i use the packets too, lovely with roti, lemon juice, grated ginger and crispy onions sprinkled on top!

It makes me laugh that on a thread about beginning fasting we talk so much about food though!

Thanks for the information on the age to start fasting. Most of the muslim children seem to start fasting in year 7 - which seems a little young ... mind you, I think part of that is peer pressure, rather than parental pressure ... much like wearing the hijab (we ask the girls to wear hijab only in school colours!)

Enjoy breaking the fast - don't know how to say that in Arabic!

salammms all!
hope the first fast went nicely for all

fuzzywuzzy...dahi puri is realllly simpple.
u can get puris(also called golguppas) ready made from any store..
beat sum yogurt wid sugar..
fill in puris wid white boiled chickpeas
top the puris with yogurt...sprinkle sum chat masala and if u like reallly lil red chilli powder...if u want u can also spoon sum Date and Tamarind chutney(which can easily b bot from store) on top!
and thats it reallY!

Deeja - couldn't find the book with the haleem recipe, but i think isasmum version is probably the easiest to start with. Think I might do the same now!
