Spooky here, everyone must be cooking for tomorrow!
Why don't I feel ashamed?

deeeja · 12/09/2007 21:57

OOOOOOOOOh, but I never learnt to make them!.....Stamps feet.....waah waah!

fuzzywuzzy · 12/09/2007 21:57

dont feel ashamed.... anything for an easy life, I shoulda married a chef I'm telling you I shoulda

deeeja · 12/09/2007 21:58

I must remember not to eat my kids' leftovers tomorrow....

deeeja · 12/09/2007 22:01

I married a man who thinks he is a chef, pretty damn fine pretend chef he is too, Alhamdulillah!

MotherofZ · 13/09/2007 08:24

lol about the somosas - cheated this year as I'm pregnant and got my mum to make loads for us, and bought some from the shops - some of them are quite nice.
Yuck - gulab jamun - give me nice big fat chocolate cake any day.
How's the first fast going for everyone?

ScottishMummy · 13/09/2007 08:29

happy Ramadan ladies

superalienstitch · 13/09/2007 08:37

ramadan mubarak everyone.
aunti flo here too, so no fasting for few days yet. ties in quite well actually with bike ride i'm doing on sunday. (29 miles, i must be insane)
seriously, i didnt know anyone still made samsosa's themselves. its time consuming, laborious thankless work. one hour to make something that lasts about 30 seconds. if youre lucky.
buy them. and the gulab jaman, and everthing else really. even tescos do perfectly decent samosas
ds1 wants to know why i'm not fasting. if i tell him, he is goin to say something quite gross i;m sure. he's ten. do i just pretend not to eat i n front of him?

ScottishMummy · 13/09/2007 09:11

ramadan mubarak too

now dont laugh but i dont know how to spell this (so phonetically) but my colleague greets me and says

Shalah lakum
what does that mean then - hink he menas how you doing/hope u well

superalienstitch · 13/09/2007 09:30

i think he means assalamu alaikum. it means 'may Allahs blessings be on you.
or hello.

ScottishMummy · 13/09/2007 09:36

when i say it that sounds right -Ta much

ScottishMummy · 13/09/2007 09:37

so what should i say apart from Aye

ejt1764 · 13/09/2007 09:42

Ramadan Mubarak ... can I ask a question too?

I know you don't fast when you have your period, but what about when pregnant or breastfeeding?

And also (from the perspective of a teacher working (when not on maternity leave like now) in a secondary school where 35% of our students are Muslim), at what age should the children start to fast?

isasmama · 13/09/2007 10:17

ladiess...buy the samosas ready made! Nisa (a brand) does reallly lovely jumbo size chicken samosas...with just pure chick in it... atleast i love them n so does the family....i dont even knw how to make them :P

ejt1764....if u r pregnant or breastfeeding and u think u will not b able to fast then there is a relaxation n u can make up the missed fasts later in the year..
HTH

isasmama · 13/09/2007 10:25

so wats everyone having for iftar today??/?
ideas please!
n fuzzywuzzy i agree wid u can v have recipe suggestions/menu everyday??
i dont have a clue wat to coook today

superalienstitch · 13/09/2007 10:29

you dont have to fast when pregnant or breastfeeeding, or ill. you make it up later in the year, except of course with pregnanc and breastfeeding you may have many years on the trot when you simply cant cope with fasting. you make them up when you can

puberty is when kids have to start. though in practice it is often later. when they feel the need/desire to. for girls that's once they get their periods. no idea what it is for boys. they may start younder, but only if they want to and can cope with it.

fuzzywuzzy · 13/09/2007 11:13

It's usually reaching puberty that kids are expected to begin fasting....however, I did my first fast when I was seven.

I was completely and utterly determined to fadt, because all the grown ups did it and I felt left out, so my mum would make sure I stayed sleeping whilst the grown ups got up for suhoor (the meal before sunrise which one partakes of during ramadan), but I got up anyway, prior to that I'd go to school sans my packed lunch insisting I was fasting and my poor mum would have to come to the school and hand in my lunch......

For today I made daal with lamb, and rice.
Samosa (obviously)
Jelly and ice cream for desert
And also Falooda

I cannot make fussy thigns whilst I'm at work...maybe on the weekend I'll make a biryani or something....

fuzzywuzzy · 13/09/2007 11:14

And Isasmum I will try those samosa next time we go shopping, thanx for the tip

ramadan mubarak sarah, welcome to MN chatty wee world

MotherofZ · 13/09/2007 11:50

Trying to avoid the fried food route today, so it' grilled chicken with some spicy pasta on the side. Am sure the samosas will come out of the freezer this weekend!!

I really want to try making 'haleem' this weekend. It's a broth made with pulses and lamb and very warming and filling, served with naan and lemon juice. yum yum

Defo agree with what someone mentioned below, we should share our food ideas! (Am just interested to see what others do)

deeeja · 13/09/2007 13:01

Salaams all!
My first fast is going not too badly! Although I did nearly eat a banana, am addicted to bananas and choccie hobnobs. All I can think of is when I eat this evening, I am aving a cup of tea and a couple of choccie hobnobs!
For my main meal this evening, I am having chicken curry, rice, salad, fruit salad and icecream. So nothing exciting really.
I am not really much of a foodee, and mostly look forward to having iftar at my friends houses.
I can't get to the mosque to pray taraweeh prayers either, don't have anyone to babysit the kids. I could prya just at home, but then you miss the atmosphere at the mosque. I am quite lucky this year, my local mosque actually has facilities for women, which is great!
I am a revert, so didn't start fasting till 18 anyway!
Children usually start at puberty, which varies from child to child.
My four year old ds fasts from breakfast to lunchtime, lunchtime to snack time, snack time to iftar time, etc.
Kids just like to feel a part of everything that goes on. My kids just love the dates, and Eid, when they get tons of pressies!

deeeja · 13/09/2007 13:05

Motherz, that haleem sounds great, I would love to have the recipe!
Could you post it please!
If anyone wants to be my penpal, my email ad is [email protected].
I will email you Sarah!
I live in Ilford, Essex, if anyone wants to have a meet-up with me!
x
