Church chat and all related things... weak coffee, dodgy tunes, rubbish attitudes... and the uplifting, inspirational, and hilarious too.

Morning all. I'm supposed to be writing my (final, yay!) essay for the Bishop's certificate discipleship course (on the ethics of assisted dying Confused) so of course I've just popped onto MN; expert in delaying tactics, me.

Welcome lucy and STST

Another evensong fan here. I try and go every month or two - usually Southwark cathedral, sometimes St Pauls. Been meaning to check out Westminster abbey too but haven't made it there yet. If anyone ever wants to join me (on a trip to London, say) do let me know!

Get back to your essay edd.(I should be doing something similar. That's why i'm here). We visited Southwark for Sunday morning service a while back and were really impressed with everything. The building, the service and the strong sense of community.

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts · 02/06/2018 14:10

I did some of my masters on assisted dying. It is a fascinating subject. I should be sorting out sermons for tomorrow and getting the paperwork done for a baptism but I'm phaffing about on mumsnet. Hey ho.

IJustHadToNameChange · 03/06/2018 16:25

Atheist tendency here, but noticed this on BBC website.

Churchgoers are being recruited to join the war on car wash slavery.

picklemepopcorn · 03/06/2018 16:57

I saw that, and was frustrated they didn't name the app. I avoid car washes and nail bars for just that reason, but now think I should use them and use the app!

IJustHadToNameChange · 03/06/2018 19:24

I found this in the Play Store.

This looks like the app they used, but the reviews are dire.

Sometimesthesmallestthings great to read your post! I love hearing from like minded people. Not many of my friends know yet that I go to the Quaker meeting, it's an odd one to pop into a conversation. My husband thinks it's slightly amusing, often making jokes about silence, and my children willingly come with me Smile. I enjoy reading the Quaker Faith and Practice book too, I pick it up daily.

Tiggles · 04/06/2018 06:55

Hello lucy and stst
I spent my younger years in free evangelical churches but now very happily settled into the Anglican church as I love the liturgy and ritual. I'm not sure my 20year old self would quite believe the person I have become!
Never been to evensong though as no churches have it where I have attended. I do have occasional Panics that I will get an incumbency at a.church that has evensong and I'll be rubbish.

Madhairday · 06/06/2018 14:24

Lovely to see newbies here, you are warmly welcome :)

I've been on holiday, so away from here a while. It's been a refreshing break.

Interesting about coming to more liturgical forms in later life. I do kind of like some of the evensnog (where is @nickelbabe when we need her?) Grin type of thing, especially for sitting in peace and just being in God's presence but I'm definitely still more in the lower church camp. But as I always say, isn't it wonderful we're all so diverse.

EddSimcox · 06/06/2018 18:08

How are you doing MHD? Glad you've had a break. Have you finished the book? Looking for beta readers?? ;) How are the lungs behaving?

I have been anxious about telling folks about work about the discernment thing (well, I've no plans to tell until after BAP, but I'm planning ahead!) and this week I discovered that a colleague is at vicar school! That made me feel a whole lot better. Grin

Hello, sorry if this is a bit cheeky as I don't normally post on here and am not a practising Christian (in that I don't go to church), but I just hoped you could keep my friend in your prayers? She has pretty much hit rock bottom in terms of her physical and mental state (she has bipolar disorder and other physical and mental ailments). I have been praying for her of course but I know that the power of God can be incredible so I just wondered if you could pray for her? Thank you

picklemepopcorn · 06/06/2018 20:06

How reassuring, Edd!

Hello Yawning, you don't need to go to church to practise! It just makes it easier for some of us!

And I'll certainly pray for your friend.

Dutchoma · 06/06/2018 21:57

Second what Pickle said and I will pray for your friend as well. And surely if you do pray for her yourself (of course, you said) you are a practising Christian.

lucydogz · 07/06/2018 12:17

Prayers from me as well yawning

yawning801 · 08/06/2018 17:35

Thank you all so much, you're all brilliant! God bless you all.

Dutchoma · 08/06/2018 21:48

How are things with your friend now Yawning

yawning801 · 10/06/2018 11:08

Up and down, this has been going on for a while now but she's persevering, she's Christian too and although she often can't make it out to church, I know that she prays a lot and has been to church groups in the past. Thank you to anyone who's praying for her

picklemepopcorn · 10/06/2018 12:37

Today's passage was from Corinthians, and had a passage about how our external bodies may be decaying, but our eternal self is being renewed day by day, as we keep our eyes on Jesus. I found that comforting.

yawning801 · 10/06/2018 18:10

Oh that's lovely pickle, I'll pass that to my friend, do you know what chapter/verse?

picklemepopcorn · 10/06/2018 19:04

It's this, from Corinthians 4

16 Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
Awaiting the New Body
5 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

MrsFTigalar · 10/06/2018 21:18

Hello. I was wondering if anyone minded if I joined in? I've kind of read along with you for a while, but am a bit uncertain about joining in established threads and groups.

I'm an old but newish mum of 1 and in a massive answer to many many prayers spanning two years and three miscarriages, 16 weeks pregnant. Our church has a new vicar so is going through lots of change so I'm very thankful for our ladies bible study as a constant right now.

picklemepopcorn · 10/06/2018 21:51

Hello! Congratulations on your little one and your bump (if I have read your post correctly). Do join in!
I'm glad you have a ladies' group for support.

Dutchoma · 10/06/2018 21:53

You are very welcome MrsFTigelar. Congratulation on your pregnancy, what an exciting time.

Madhairday · 10/06/2018 21:58

Love that passage, pickle :)

Welcome, MrsFT, and congratulations on your pregnancy! So sorry to hear of all you've been through in the last couple of years Flowers

Welcome, yawning, lovely to have you and we're so happy to pray for your friend.

Edd, that's fab about your colleague! It's such an exciting road you're on :) I'm so thrilled that you're on it! Thanks for the reading offer, it's gone beyond the beta readers stage now sadly, sorry!!! I did have some a few months back through my blog/newsletter. It's now with the copy editor then with the designers and just waiting for commendations etc. It's scary, so prayers welcome, I feel so ill equipped for all it seems an author needs to do and be...
