I think people should be careful doing Reiki

This post assumes a belief in spirituality so I'm not interested in debating that specifically. If you want to please start your own thread.

From what I can see, reiki is channeling occult energy through people's bodies and is therefore potentially risky. It seems to me that new age practitioners will repeatedly say they don't believe in malevolent entities but I think this is naive.

One of my friends told me that his dad was never the same after he became involved with reiki.

And also nearly everyone I've met who has done it was told by the reiki practitioner that they are 'special' have a 'gift' or could easily become a reiki master.

'Life force energy that comes from the universe'

Well that sounds awfully vague to me. I expect you will also say that there is no such thing as malevolent spirits.

The lady in the video was using reflexology to TTC and the practitioner unethically decided to do reiki on her which caused her problems.

Lottie, can you tell me where you get the idea that malevolent spirits are involved in reiki? I do actually accept there are malevolent spirits but fail to see the connection with reiki. i have worked with reiki for 25 years, and it does nothing but good. I use it on myself, my pets, my family and friends, and have also used it with clients.

And no, it isn't a pyramid scheme, what on earth makes Still Trying think this? There are three degrees which you learn after integrating each stage. It costs to do the training, but the Reiki Master who does the training has put time and effort into doing the work so this is only fair. It certainly isn't a pyramid scheme. I learned a long time ago and have found it enormously beneficial. I have used to it to help healing on family members, and for many other things. It is not in any way associated with money making schemes or malevolent spirits! Any training that is undertaken costs money, obviously. After that it's up to the person whether they wanted to train to Master level and teach. Most do not do it to get rich quick, they do it because they love Reiki.

Overthehillsandfaraway8 · 07/01/2018 20:48

I should add that there are good and bad practitioners, as there are in any field. I have seen ridiculous adverts on Facebook claiming to teach reiki online. Absolute rubbish. You can't learn it from a book or online, you need to be attuned to the energy and taught to use it properly.

Overthehillsandfaraway8 · 07/01/2018 20:51

It is a form of spiritual healing, something that has been practised for millennia by the way. I suggest Lottie that you do some research.

Occult - from the Latin "occultus' which means hidden or secret. It is often applied to the metaphysical but it is not the root meaning.

Sorry - I do not take You tube vloggers very seriously and she lost me after 30 secs of "I was like..., seriously..., cool....".

I agree that the practitioner should have obtained her consent first. If she was up for reflexology there are plenty of sites warning of the dangers of that too

Snowdrop18 · 07/01/2018 20:55

OP do you know what "occult" means? I only recently found out myself.

I might have misunderstood but it seems like religion has attached a lot of worry to something that's not anything to worry about.

PencilsInSpace · 07/01/2018 21:14

Hard to answer this without knowing your own personal belief system and how your worry that it might have an 'occult' element fits in with that.

What is it you think might happen?

It's woo, fairly harmless woo as far as I can tell unless people are spending a lot or not seeking proper medical care. Most of the world believes in some sort of woo or other. Some is dignified with the label 'religion' and some isn't.

Lots of people are raking it in by charging for reiki treatments and training but I've met many reiki masters who will give free treatments and won't charge to pass on the techniques.

It makes people feel better because someone is paying them attention. We all need a bit of that one way or another.

PugonToast · 07/01/2018 21:18

Your you tube link doesn't seem to work

lottieandmia22 · 07/01/2018 22:04

Are you incapable of using a dictionary Elphamus? I suggest you look up the definition instead of inventing your own.

Overthehills, thank you. I will look at the link you suggest. I don't think Reiki practitioners intentionally try to channel malevolent spirits but it seems to me that reiki can open the door to unknown entities who might wish to cause problems in people's lives. On one hand the ailments they have are healed but they begin to notice problems in other areas like relationships or money. I also have a friend who's dad became heavily involved in reiki and he said he was never the same again.

OP posts:
lottieandmia22 · 07/01/2018 22:10

The Latin meaning is beside the point. How it is used today is the point. And I don't see the point of arguing it's meaning either?

MoKnickers · 07/01/2018 22:12

Oh ffs. Malevolent spirits...energy... it’s all just such a load of tripe.

No real evidence for any of it beyond placebo. You can “qualify” in Reiki over the internet ffs.

As for trying to suggest there’s such a thing as being a “master” in Reiki - oh come ON 😁

You might as well claim to have a degree from the Neverland University in the mating habits of unicorns 🙄

headinhands · 07/01/2018 22:17

Jaysus guys. It's 2018. How can people subscribe to this? The only malevolent crap in this world is other humans.

BertrandRussell · 07/01/2018 22:36

But the energy.............

Will no one think of the energies?

lottieandmia22 · 07/01/2018 22:55

I believe in a spiritual realm. Others may not. That's up to you. I wondered how long before head in hands showed up.

OP posts:
MoKnickers · 07/01/2018 23:11

Sorry but if you believe in things there’s no actual evidence for - and never has been - then you’re daft. You just are 🤷‍♀️

PugonToast · 07/01/2018 23:21

@lottieandmia22

Are you particularly worried about the occult Lottie? I don't mean this nastily but you seem very concerned and have had unusual reactions to massage and you seem very anxious.

lottieandmia22 · 07/01/2018 23:28

Well that's your opinion mo. I don't have to care what you think. We all arrive at our beliefs through personal experience.

I am not concerned about the occult for me - it's on behalf of a friend who is getting sucked into reiki. I've just never heard anything good about it's continued use over time.

OP posts:
lottieandmia22 · 07/01/2018 23:29

I only had 'unusual' reactions when I was the one performing Indian Head massage. If I do a normal massage no such thing occurs.

WitchIwasaWitch18 · 07/01/2018 23:38

I've had reiki on impulse at a demonstration at festival so lots of people watching. I had three very firm taps on my forehead and felt my face touched as well as being aware of a lot of light. It was only a 5 minute session and when I asked the lady why she was a bit rough the audience assured me she had not physically touched me at all. Convinced me there is more to it than the sceptics want us to think.

I don't think it is harmful if the practitioner's intent is good.

7Days · 07/01/2018 23:53

Honestly does it make you guys feel better to come on here and snigger at people ?
You may not believe in woo or whatever. BUT you get your sense of comfort and steadiness from SOMETHING. everyone has a different psychological profile. Some people are satisfied by their own su jective experiences, that is fine. Others need something more communal and objective. Also fine.
It depends on your worldview. People will lean to a perspective depending on their psychology, how much weight they give to different aspects.
The woo people find comfort in the idea of connection. Some sceptics find a type of soothment in laughing at others attempts.
Its the same process if they could only see it

MoKnickers · 07/01/2018 23:57

I suppose what it comes down to is - I prefer to believe in real things. I find it astonishing when people just decide to believe in stuff that isn’t real 🤷‍♀️

BertrandRussell · 07/01/2018 23:57

“The woo people find comfort in the idea of connection. Some sceptics find a type of soothment in laughing at others attempts.

I’m not laughing. I don’t find the idea of making money out of vulnerable people and spinning them a load of bullshit even remotely funny.

7Days · 08/01/2018 00:06

Bit they are not claiming to cure cancer (spare me the outliers there are opportunistic wankers everywhere) 99 times out of a hundred they are claiming to relax You, aid your body in healing itself, give you a it of time being the focus of attention. They are not predatory and operate from a place of goodwill.

You are laughing, you always do on these threads. It gives you some sort of psychologocal feedback or satisfaction to do so, but you are taking from others to get yours.

lottieandmia22 · 08/01/2018 00:14

I don't mind people not believing but it does piss me off when they try repeatedly to derail the thread. It's very rude.
